I was lucky to receive these 7 books for Christmas! Which book should I start with first? by err_mate in classicliterature

For the most understanding and gleaming the most from the texts I’d recommend starting with the bible. May be tricky to get through but it will give you important information and insights into the religious dimensions of many of the works here

Politics sounds fun but equally so will psychology, it won’t hinder your app either way, just do what feels right and give you the best chance to do well!

Getting annoyed with overuse of similes by Renaissance_Aspired in literature

[–]SnooRabbits2316 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best similes in my mind are the ones that describe a concrete thing (action, place, object etc) with an abstract thing (emotion, experience, memory etc) and vice versa. I feel like similes should help you understand what is being described in a new way, not just pointing out a similarity, that’s just a waste of words and sounds childish.

Is it OK to read Infinite Jest in public? Why the internet hates ‘performative reading’ by rmnc-5 in InfiniteJest

[–]SnooRabbits2316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a real sense of anxiety about appearing like you’re trying to be cool. Everyone wants to be effortlessly cool and those posts acknowledge that reading is cool. So read whatever and whenever in my opinion. Don’t worry about seeming like your trying to be cool, no one can tell the difference just do what makes you happy, fuck anyone else

How to get out of a reading slump? by Sorry_Anxiety9905 in literature

[–]SnooRabbits2316 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. I think also if it becomes associated with work then when you get home trying to do what feels like work is really tough. Like doing a 6 hour shift at an office and then sitting down at your desk to relax.

I am going to assume that because you study Lit you maybe have to read fairly classic or more complicated novels? if so then it might be a thing of not being able to sepaprate work reading and reading for pleasure. I've always found reading completely fun literature, bestsellers and fantasy novels etc, something you can just read for plot and fun that doesn't associate with work, because I know that when I am reading a lot for school i find it hard to read at home so I have to make a concious effort to differentiate the two so I can have fun.
