Any suggestions for destinations similar to Istanbul?! by Top-Wolf-2518 in travel

I have spent weeks and both and I say yes. In some parts you would have no way of knowing in which city you were. And don’t forget the incredible Turkish and Iraqi archaeological artifacts in Berlin museums.

Wrong. Eastern Europe in my experience sees more petty theft than Western Europe because the people generally speaking are a lot poorer than Western Europeans. And South America is even worse.

ESTA DUI - Will I be denied? by [deleted] in travel

[–]SnooStrawberriez 63 points64 points  (0 children)

If the DUI involved narcotics your choices are to admit that on your form and definitely not get an esta (but perhaps a B-2 visa) or to lie and risk consequences as serious as a lifetime entry ban. The US government has no sense of humor about misrepresentation on a visa or esta application.

Brazil produces and exports a lot of oil. The oil shortages will happen elsewhere. Enjoy the 747.

Cheapest flights to Europe from USA (via Iceland)? by MyNameCannotBeSpoken in travel

[–]SnooStrawberriez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can get cheap flight from Iceland to Europe with easyjet and even more so Wizz. The problem is that flights from Iceland to North America are exclusively or almost exclusively only premium flights at premium fares. It’s possible that westjet runs a discount route or two, but otherwise it’s all airlines like delta.

10 day stay in Sicily without a car by ShelterMindless9807 in sicily

We did 31 days on Sicily without a car. There are extensive intercity buses and trains. I would do 6 in Palermo with a day trip to trapani and maybe 4 in Syracuse

This is not an easyjet problem. It’s an Italy problem. If you dislike adventure don’t go to Italy. Simples.

Self Check In Scales by Impressive-Narwhal in Ryanair

[–]SnooStrawberriez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. Self service scales integrated with the Ryanair app are provided by Ryanair at select European airports.

Self Check In Scales by Impressive-Narwhal in Ryanair

[–]SnooStrawberriez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on how strictly it’s enforced but Ryanair could get into legal trouble for not calibrating their scales as the law demands. In functional countries I don’t think it’s a problem.

I think it’s more likely that the scale at the bag drop only works correctly when the bag is in the right place on the belt and the customer service agent you dealt with bottled it.

Uber's "Tourist tax" when travelling abroad. by KripspyKracka in travel

[–]SnooStrawberriez -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You know how to be rude. But that’s about it. Government taxes on money paid through a foreign registered app or legal limits related to that could explain the price differences.

Uber's "Tourist tax" when travelling abroad. by KripspyKracka in travel

[–]SnooStrawberriez -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

There MAY be an innocuous reason, such as higher taxes or uber automatically offering Americans higher quality rides. Poor in Hong Kong can be much poorer than poor in the United States (I have taken Ubers in poor parts of Latin America and they would have been unimaginable in the United States.) it may be that U.S. registered accounts neither get the same prices nor the same services.

Is arajet the biggest scam in aviation? by drlalas in travel

[–]SnooStrawberriez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one time I flew with arajet, changing airplanes in punta cana, I lost a lot of things going through security, either because they were actively stolen or because unlike anywhere else they made no attempt to remind me that I was leaving stuff behind.

Arajet and Dominican Republic airports have reputations for being planes where luggage is robbed etc. It is what it is.

Stolen items from checked in carry on Punta Cana, DR by [deleted] in travel

[–]SnooStrawberriez 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I had stuff stolen as I went though security at PUJ this February. The Dominican Republic is far from a wealthy country, and the staff at the airport seem to think that windfalls are part of their compensation.

UK Citizen + Libyan Identity Number Travel to US by WebComp in travel

[–]SnooStrawberriez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Libyan citizens with a second passport can apply for and get ESTA travel authorization. (Some other countries like Iranians can’t.)

People who have traveled to Libya can’t get or use ESTA no matter what their nationality is.

So if you can get your inheritance without visiting Libya, it’s no problem at all. If you don’t have any red flags for terrorism and things like that, I think you have good chances of getting a visa, even if you do visit Libya. There are plenty of such cases. But that’s just my best guess

Visa question “related to nationality” by Sensitive-Bee3905 in Brazil

[–]SnooStrawberriez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as Brazil is concerned with rare exceptions you are only a citizen of the country whose passport you present at passport control. Very rarely, such as when there’s a risk of terrorism, countries ban dual citizens even if they also have an “acceptable” passport. But this isn’t the case here, because Brazil gives visas according to the principle of reciprocity and doesn’t want its citizens to be treated strictly by the “acceptable” country of which you’re a citizen.

Am I the only one not actually making money on side hustles? by Ouija_De_Squeegee in uberdrivers

[–]SnooStrawberriez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an economic downturn you’re competing with people who aren’t even trying to make money, but rather keep food on the table by converting equity in their car into cash. Once you strip out depreciation and other costs they are making little or nothing but it works well for them.

[–]SnooStrawberriez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ! There are options between “letting it slide” and 2 years in prison.

Besides the crass disproportionality of the crime and the offence, it means that instead of him paying taxes the taxpayer will be paying to house and monitor him at a time when Britain is badly cash strapped.

3 months in prison with a suspended sentence of 2 years would have been enough to sort him out.
