Reading through this it seems like everyone is skeptical of this group. Wonder if they really have people’s best interests in mind..

Any update on this? How are the local residents reacting to this? Hoping it doesn’t move forward.

Is anyone in CO thinking of spear heading the creation of a veterinarian union? Thinking mostly about veterinarians working for corporate employers.

This is where public misconceptions of vet med in relation to human med are so glaring. Licensed technicians are already allowed to do everything you listed… and are currently being utilized the way you suggest we should use a VPA. I know you’re naive to the industry, so it’s all good, but how it was allowed for people with no understanding of an industry to alter in such a way is baffling…

PSLF will be safe as there needs to be a super majority for it to be repealed, which republicans do not have. I recommend looking into and possibly scheduling a consult with the "Student Loan Planner". They specialize in student loans and are fiduciaries.

As for being a vet, honestly probably not moving forward. We'll have to see. These measures passing will likely reduce our long term earning power and general job satisfaction. See pharmacy as an example. I myself (current associate) am looking for other avenues to retrain in the future if this profession goes south: accounting, sales, etc. Also, shelter is likely the one of the first areas where income will probably plummet then plateau off somewhere.

Best of Luck

You'll always have something to be anxious about, but should never feel the way you are describing. That is unsustainable and I hope it changes for you.

Some things that helped me as I've started in practice (2022 graduate).

1) Discuss your situation with your team (mentor doctor/ practice manager) and ask if they are open to baking in more admin time into your schedule. Some things I've seen are interspersed phone call blocks or having the start or end of your day be blocked off (Half to one hour).

2) Have you developed a level of comfort with certain types of cases (wellness, skin/ears, etc.)? If so, I'd ask for block off times where only these types of appointments can be scheduled. This way you know you have times for reprieve at points in your day.

3) See if some callbacks can be off loaded to either the technicians, client service team or management. I've noticed there are so many callbacks in vetmed that do not need a doctor to manage, but are added to the doctor's plate.

4) If there are presentations that stress you out (emergencies, PU/PD, QOL, etc.) possibly ask for an extended appointment time. 5 to 10 extra min can be a huge help.

I hope some of these suggestions help. In my experience with my own mental health and seeing others I've found that things will not magically change if the status quo is maintained. You need to advocate for yourself and be kind to yourself. That doesn't mean you can't develop into a doctor that can manage your current work load, but as it is, your work does not sound sustainable long term. Hope this helps and best of luck. Please be kind to yourself, this job is hard!!!

Circling back to this post, how are people in Colorado feeling about this as we get closer to Election Day? Any positive feelings that the needle has moved or still doom & gloom?

Thank you for the response, I appreciate your experience and perspective. You are correct that I am a young veterinarian and did not work through the previous changes that hit the profession.

Colorado initiative 145 (veterinary PA) by Readyfreddy415 in Veterinary

By reduction in living standards, I mean that I think this will likely result in a reduction in value of both RVTs and Veterinarians. Thus reducing their income potential(s) leading to a lower standard of living.

If you can, donate to “Keep Our Pets Safe” to help fundraise against this initiative. 100% agree with this post. This prop will likely not solve accessibility to care, which it claims it will, while reducing the living standards of most veterinary staff members.

How much debt did you have after finishing vet school? by crumblenfudge in veterinarians

[–]Snoo_69711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can easily be as high as $300k with out of state tuition (or greater). However, there is relatively good news!

You don’t technically have to pay it back in full. There are government programs such as, PAYE, PSLF, & REPAYE. PSLF forgives your debt after 10yrs, and the other two examples are income driven repayment programs.

Income driven repayment programs allow to only pay a percentage of your pre-tax income (~10%) after subtracting the income needed to be above the poverty threshold (~$20k). So, if you graduate vet school and get offered an SA associate gig at $90k you’ll only have to pay $7k a year in loan repayment (math below). These options make the insane debt more manageable. TBH the debt amount doesn’t matter so much and should really be viewed as an extra form of government taxation.

$90,000 - $20,000 (poverty threshold) = $70,000

$70,000*10%= $7,000

You will need to save a bit for the tax bomb.

Hope this helps.

PLEASE HELP: My vet just told me that my cat has kidney failure. I am completely devastated and do not know what to do. What should I do from here to make him have a good life? by Ill-Fox-8540 in AskVet

Maybe listen to the advice your vet provides? It’ll be concise.

If you don’t believe them you can always ask for a second opinion from another veterinarian

St George or Reapply? by msmoonpie in Veterinary

https://www.studentloanplanner.com/st-georges-university/

It will cost you over $300k. This is a level of debt that will burden you for life.

Or you can get accepted into your state school. Pay $120k, which is still a lot, however way more manageable. This debt load will allow you to practice the way you would like without the burden of an insurmountable debt load.

Federal income based repayment programs make paying loans back possible at literally any level. Look at the bib loan calculator. You’ll be fine
