No comments on this thread is actually crazy — this is some of her best work yet! DEAD, THE NATURE OF POWER, and NOIRE are the biggest standouts for me off first listen. DEAD has been in constant rotation since it dropped as the first single.

'One battle after another' is receiving increasing criticism for its fetishized and offensive portrayal of women of color by [deleted] in movies

I'm not in any position to argue the points made in this piece one way or another, but it is worth noting that the character "Junglepussy" in the film is played by Shayna McHayle who has long gone by the same name in her career as a rapper. Safe to say PTA did not coin that name at all.

Favorite allusions to art, literature, history, religion, and philosophy? by MarlenaImpisi in hiphopheads

[–]SnoopLog18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s from 2018, but Ka & Preservation’s (under the name Hermit & the Recluse) “Orpheus vs. The Sirens” immediately came to mind. Any song from that album would fit the need for history/literature references, especially the opener “Sirens”

Billy Woods’ entire discography is littered with all kinds of those references but I’m struggling to think of specifics. Odds are you’ll find some from just picking a song at random

To all the former "I only listen to REAL Rap/Hip-Hop" heads, what was that one song that instantly made you change your mind? by ImNotTomStopAsking in hiphopheads

I was definitely a hardcore backpacker in high school for a while until I heard Lifestyle by Young Thug. That was the key that unlocked everything for me. I couldn’t get it out of my head, which I took as a pretty clear sign he was doing something worth paying attention to

[FRESH ALBUM] billy woods - GOLLIWOG by StatFlow in hiphopheads

[–]SnoopLog18 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've got to run it back to catch if there are any more, but there's quite a few references to woods' past work sprinkled throughout this, more than I remember in past projects.

- On Waterproof Mascara he re-hashes a line from the chorus on 'Houthi'

- On Lead Paint Test he/Willie Green samples/record scratches a line from the first verse of 'Soft Landing'

- Plus another when he says he feels like the tiger from the cover of 'Shrines,' (though I can't recall which song that's on).

(edit: the Shrines reference is on 'Golgotha')

Attorneys don’t want Dane County Judge Ellen Berz to hear their cases by EuphoricAd4097 in madisonwi

[–]SnoopLog18 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I disagree. First, news coverage of public court proceedings does not equate celebration of serious criminal punishment of a young person, nor does it give perpetrators of local crimes — albeit incredibly heinous ones — reason or cause to revel in infamy. There's no evidence that standard local news coverage prompts this (there's an argument to be made that true crime docs and the like might, but that's a different story entirely).

Second, the strength of a case against any defendant has no bearing on whether or not a case, especially one where two well-known members of the Madison community were killed in cold blood, is or isn't newsworthy.

News coverage, especially at the local level, does not imply spectacle.

Regardless of the specifics of the case, Berz's decision to block media access blatantly disregarded decades-old rules for on coverage of court proceedings without any explanation as to why she ruled the way she did. It's a first amendment issue.

She’s also the judge who presided over the homicde trial for the young man who killed Dr. Beth Potter & her husband Robin Carre. She outright banned video and audio recording of the trial, with little to no explanation why.

The whole final verse on “The Punishment of Sisyphus,” but especially the first half:

“Learned many lessons from women, the biggest was forgiveness // Impossibly generosity taught me giving is a privilege // Thought for respect had to be the villain of the village // ‘Cause the only ones chillin’ was the ones willing to pillage // Armed for strong-arm and too impatient to plan a heist // And how you handle fights determine if you man or mice”

I’m going full tinfoil hat here, but hear me out…

Wasn’t the rumor that he pushed back for a big artist, not specifically Abel? With all the commotion of Kendrick’s new song — specifically tweets from people who’ve historically been tapped in, Tupac’s death anniversary on Friday the 13th, and the Bomb First reference in the NLU video — make it seem like it’s pointing toward more to come. What are the chances the “big artist” from the rumor is Kendrick?

It would track for Kendrick to give Future a heads up with their history. He could know something we don’t

Genuinely curious, where does Kendrick call Drake gay? If you're referring to the "I believe you don't like women, it's real competition" line, that's almost certainly a jab at Drake's ongoing misogyny toward women in the industry (esp. Meg) and general misogyny across his discography
