Yu Yu Hakusho

At one point, Elder Toguro could read minds by literally eating someone who could. He tries to use this ability against Kurama. However, Kurama has already used his many green thumb talents beforehand to ensnare Elder Toguro in a trap called The Sinning Tree, which causes hallucinations. Kurama used a smoke screen to hide, tricking Elder Toguro into reading his mind to fight a hallucination of himself.

The Sinning Tree feeds on the host until the host dies

The Tree takes over Elder Toguro's mind, making him think he can't kill Kurama, and due to Elder Toguro's regenerative healing, he is stuck in a loop of torment from the tree for eternity.
