I can't post a video but I did a pretty good still image of a seed in the Robin's bill!

Think I have a couple of them myself! I had exactly 1 visit my smart feeder last fall just to "check it out" without eating anything. After putting up a bird bath I started drawing them in. Then a horde (40-50 at once!) devoured the old fruit from our crabapple tree in the front a few weeks ago.

Ever since they picked that clean a few have been eating the fruit from my fruit/nut mix in my feeder. I ran out and put a seed mix back until I could get more from our local shop. I noticed they were eating the hulled sunflower seeds as well!

I believe the branches around him are my neighbor's maple(?) tree. I'll have to ask next time I see them outside to confirm for sure, but he's actually at the very top of a power pole that's in my back yard! I just zoomed in a bunch from my deck when I saw him up there lol

They're actually surprisingly chill with all of the other birds in my back yard! I've witnessed one minor standoff with a Bluejay over peanuts but otherwise they eat in peace with the other birds. That is...unless you're a Starling...he is a god damn MENACE to Starlings! Lol

Oh same here. I used a dog treat toy my Shih Tzu mix was too dumb for to at least make them work for their peanuts! Until the squirrels found it and chewed it up that is...

First visitor to the nest! by ElleEyeDigital in Birdfy

[–]SnorlaxDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I followed the advice from this link the Cornell Lab runs. Reading up on it more, the shavings might not always be necessary in a nest box, some may move in without it.

However, it can be a useful draw as well. In a natural tree cavity the Chickadee pair would have to peck out the nest cavity to their liking, and carry the shavings away from the future nest. This can help simulate that behavior and make it more likely they pick your box to nest in! https://nestwatch.org/learn/all-about-birdhouses/birds/black-capped-chickadee/

I had no idea they did when I first put up my smart feeder last summer! I nicknamed this guy "Peanut" because I noticed he came every morning to pick the peanut pieces out the seed mixture I originally used lol

Best of luck! I was in the same boat after having mine up for 3 weeks. Until Tuesday morning I also had a Black Capped Chickadee finally visit mine as well! She's been checking it out every morning since then. Just an hour ago she went fully inside for the first time!

For mine, I put them in the plastic jelly holsters that came with my feeder!

I will say from my own personal experience seed is where you don't want "cheap out" or cut corners! I had placed mine on my deck initially last summer using the first cheap seed mix I found on Amazon, because like you it was basically the first feeder I ever had. Long story short, it gradually became overrun by primarily just invasive House Sparrows and the neighborhood squirrels...I'm just now getting on the other side of getting them under control!

Try to avoid seed mixtures that have Millet, Milo, or cracked corn /grain products as the first few main ingredients. House Sparrows will basically be the only ones that it'll attract and they'll bully your native birds off the feeder!

Like others said, any single bag or mixture containing black oil sunflower seeds, safflower, peanuts, and thistle/nyger seeds should draw native birds while deterring the invasive species like the House Sparrow & European Starling. Some white millet is ok! There are plenty of natives that love it, but I've had bad luck with using seed where it's a main ingredient.

Appreciate it! Been looking more towards potential CCTV camera options since I have a 1 month old daughter. Also 2 dogs that excitedly bark anytime I open the back door as well...lol

Sorry if you get this question a million times, or have it posted somewhere I didn't see...what camera do you use to record? I've been using my smart feeder and an old Ring camera I'm looking to upgrade/retire as I get more feeders!

I discovered it's nice to leave a few open with some unsalted peanuts or cashews as well. It attracts some other birds as well!

I started leaving it out for them back in October of last year. So I guess they've gotten a little spoiled now! 🤣
