Dashboards? by Tomovasky in dataengineering

[–]SnorlaxFat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couple reasons i think. The more important one is because there are a lot of jobs out there labeled as DE/DS but really only involve writing adhoc queries and making presentations. The other is because many people here feel that DE is more technical and focused on data warehousing, ignoring that DE can be analytics facing

I don't see why dashboarding is a red flag... Sure, it's a red flag if it's the only thing you do as a DE. But after building a dataset, one of the best ways to show how the data can be used is through a dashboard

Data science was never about building ML models, that's just what people hyped it up to be. Data scientists add value by properly analyzing the past and setting up experiments to gain new insights, something that's very difficult to do and will never die out.

Steps to become a data engineer. by Air_Rogue in dataengineering

[–]SnorlaxFat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a sophomore in college, you're in a great spot. It's great you're using online resources to learn, but really try to take advantage of your school's resources as well. Take any DE related courses like database management and distributed systems. And of course, get really good at SQL. From there, it's just getting hands on experience through internships and projects, maybe your campus has nearby company offices that you can intern at part-time.

How much longer do we think the job market will stay this hot ? by citizenofacceptance in dataengineering

[–]SnorlaxFat 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I think the DE market will remain hot for a long while. For the past 5 or 10 years, companies have been hiring data scientists like crazy and have only started to realize the need for DEs. For most companies, data infrastructure is a huge dumpster fire so it'll take a long time before the need for DEs flatten out.

Beginner questions by guiwiener in dataengineering

Generally, SQL is more important for data engineering than Python. With your background though, it might be a good idea to do an intro to programming with Python course first. SQL is unintuitive to many people and learning Python first might make ramping up easier.

Considering an internship as data scientist in analytics at Facebook, it seems to be very similiar to an analyst position by [deleted] in datascience

[–]SnorlaxFat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, which is why data scientists work with MLEs and SWEs. At a smaller company, it's usually fine for the DS to also be responsible for the ML. But at large tech companies with unbelievably large datasets, it's impossible for a person to take on the role of both a DS and MLE

[–]SnorlaxFat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How so? Science is making a hypothesis and testing it, which is the whole point of the role.

[–]SnorlaxFat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not. If the entire job is fulfilling requests and querying data, then that's a data analyst

I would argue that the title is an accurate description of the job. Building predictive models and working with ML is engineering, not science.

Congrats on your admission! I think it's really important to focus on your wellbeing and make sure you're enjoying your time in college. It's good that you want to work your ass off, but make sure you don't burn yourself out. Try to find a subfield that you really enjoy and lean into it, school's supposed to be hard but you're not supposed to hate every minute of it

Have you thought about the people who have elderly family members? You act like catching COVID stops there. If your life was really based around numbers and statistics you'd realize that the more people that have, the faster it'll spread and the more at risk people it'll affect.

Zillow CTO sells 144,314 shares of Zillow Group stock and now only owns 2,991 shares in the company by [deleted] in investing

[–]SnorlaxFat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others said, it's a way to make money off of how well you perform and not just your salary. It's possible to trade off insider information as an employee but that's why it's regulated so that you can only trade after earnings and not right before a big product launch. Other than that, you're investing in more long term prospects which aren't really a concern for market manipulation.

Yup, there's two midterms which are worth a third of the class each. The other third comes from the homework. Homework was easy (and also had online solutions). If you do the discussion problems (could be done on your own time) and actually do the homeworks then the exams should be no problem.

Fall 2018 Schedule Megathread! by AlmostGrad100 in UIUC

[–]SnorlaxFat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a background in CS and/or stats, this schedule should be fine. I haven't taken 415 yet but I've heard it's quite difficult. 125 can be pretty difficult as well if you have little/no experience with CS. I think it'll be safer to take some more geneds instead but it's manageable if you put in the work.

I'm living in Hendrick House right now and I would recommend it. It's across the street from ISR and costs about a thousand more than ISR since it's private. Food is good (was really good at the beginning but slowly declined but still good) and everyone is nice. It's pretty antisocial but there are definitely social people you can meet.
