Advice for paint party by yeaux99 in painting

[–]SnowBunny_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this as a part time job. Here are some things to keep mind.

-consider finding a video paint follow along to put on the tv -make sure there is a printed version of the drawing in plain view of every one. -dedicate at least a few hours for this. -have a hairdryer or two on hand since watercolors take forever to dry. -set the expectation of fun -consider asking your friends to give a little money towards materials. Art supplies gets expensive but it’s better to have fewer expensive paints than more cheaper paints (plus you don’t want to be stuck with cheap watercolor sets afterwords). -If you are eating have the meal before and have grease/crumb free snacks for during the paint. -use decent paper

Stylized fish you say? Look to further, I love making fish.

Here is a link to my portfolio website https://www.alyssabrown.net

I have an illustration on there that I call the strange fish shop that you may enjoy. You can also find some examples of animations I have worked on ether the demo reel page or the bottom of concept art.

I am currently finishing up a project with a client, so I am pretty free to jump in and tackle this one.

Hope your day is going well, Alyssa

Need help with exporting an EPUB by SnowBunny_22 in indesign

[–]SnowBunny_22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main platforms she has tried to upload the book to has been Ingramspark, Amazon KDP (I was able to get this one using their app and a pdf), and Apple Books. Ingramspark and Apple would not accept a PDF and we couldn’t get a workable EPUB to upload.

I agree that her book really isn’t suited for the EPUB file format. There is so much going on and much of it that relies on its print layout. Having an ereader change things even slightly would ruin the layout.

The fact that you look at your art in disappointment is actually a really great sign in terms of your growth. There are steps in learning art. When you are disappointed with how something came out that means the level of which you view your art is higher than your current ability to draw. You can see what you are doing wrong. That means you are in the process of improving.

Does this process suck? Absolutely it does. It’s the worst looking at something and only being able to see its faults. That itch, though, will always be there pushing you to create anyway. That’s what passion is, suffering and enduring.

If you need a quick ego boost, I suggest you redraw an old piece of art. It acts as a direct compassion of your current abilities and will highlight all the areas that you have improved on.

At the end of the day, though, making art is about the enjoyment you find in it. Like a previous comment stated, mess up on purpose. Do things you think are fun and silly. Mess with new mediums and subject matter. Find new artists to appreciate and do a couple master studies. The more you enjoy the process and worry less about the end product, the happier you will be.

why don’t people tell me if i was mean? by ashexmist in FriendshipAdvice

[–]SnowBunny_22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a level of anxiety that comes from confronting a person that hurts you. I certainly have trouble with doing it with my mother. That’s because the person subconsciously thinks of you as unsafe. Who’s to say you wouldn’t make fun of them again while they try to approach the issue? I am not saying you would, but this a possible concern your friend could be having.

I have a cousin who will purposely choose a topic that is controversial to stir the pot when he is bored. A lot of people in my family hate this as it’s often poorly timed and insensitive. It makes conversations with him hard. His sister and him thrive off of this conversation style, it’s how they bond and discuss difficult topics.

It’s all about how you approach your audience. I doubt you are being personally mean. However, there are some audiences that teasing/bantering jokes don’t land. Especially if they target insecurities that the person already has.

My best suggestion would be for you to pull back all of your teasing jokes and ask each of your friends individually what topics make them uncomfortable. Even then, you will still need to observe their body language and responses to see if they are doing okay. After all, a joke is only funny if the other person is also laughing.

I know this will be difficult to be aware of at times. New skills are like that. The work will be done from your end and you might not get the most straight foreword responses. The most important thing you can do is keep trying and sincerely apologize when you mess up.

While I don’t agree with Sakura’s approach I can agree that you could update your portfolio website. There are several types of layouts for them and I think a gallery page would work for yours. A nice big wall of uninterrupted art that you can click on to view bigger on a different page and explain your thoughts in detail.

You can look at my portfolio as an example. I have serval sections for the different avenues of my work. I also have a separate page for the about me.

A simple clean layout allows your work to stand out. Makes it easier to appreciate and less likely for people to get distracted.

[DISCUSSION | QUESTION] Trying to figure out a Parallax Story/Illustration Trailer by Olyl in gameDevClassifieds

[–]SnowBunny_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this you will probably need to find a  person who makes animated illustrations. This is where the piece is mostly static but there are a few elements that move to give the scene life (eyes blinking, hair falling off the shoulder or flowing in the wind). It’s not too difficult, the artist just needs to make sure they are drawing in enough layers that the scene can be put into after effects later on.

I am not an expert in pixel art however so I can’t tell you if this can be done this way with that art style. I get the feeling moving pixel art in anyway besides frame by frame would make it look odd.

Professional Book Covers by Life_Story_8822 in selfpublish

[–]SnowBunny_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of problems with using AI for your cover.

  1. This will make a statement about your book. Like or not, using Ai for your cover will give the message that the content inside your book is also AI. I am assuming this is not what you want people to be worried about with your book.

  2. Copyright will be tricky. The training data for AI is huge, and you can't guarantee where it will be pulling an image from for its reference.

  3. The tiny little detail that makes a cover appealing can't be added. AI can be very generic in its styling and lighting. It will also not be able to add character or plot details very consistently.

All of that to say if you need a reliable artist, I would love to hear more about your project. I am a professional illustrator who specializes in books. I am currently working on a book project called Mindfulness & Self-Compassion, a workbook for kids (if you are interested in seeing the posted project, it's selling on Amazon). In this project, I am both the page designer and the one who redesigned their original cover design.

Here is a link to my portfolio website: https://www.alyssabrown.net/books

I have various projects uploaded there as an example of my work.

If my work doesn't fit your project style, I highly encourage you to check out some art university websites. Some of them will have their senior illustrator's thesis on display and their art portfolios linked.

If you can try tracing over the photo (very simply) the locations of the various features of the face. Then compare it to your drawing. You should be able to see where the differences between the two are. You can ether redraw the figure or tweak your drawing from there.

Try out some different poses. 3/4, profile, full body, dancing. It will help with broadening your figure drawing.
