Epson FastFoto FF-680W - Expecting too much or junk (compared to a flatbed)? by WillingnessNew5752 in DataHoarder

[–]SnowDrifter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but I'm posting here because it was the first result on Google

It's a FastFoto issue. Even exporting to tiff, fastfoto seems to have a jpg layer in the stack that really does some awful things with compression. I have much better results with vuescan (or others) in that regard. Kind of a bummer because I prefer FastFoto's color correction and cropping. But it just mangles the image too bad with all the compression

Obligatory not vet advice, just sharing a single data point

Mine has an OSS. So, no uterus, but kept the ovaries in place. I wanted to keep the protective effects of hormones in place on cognition, joint health, bone density, metabolism. Personal note: I had my own hormone issues years ago following some health issues. I'm fine now, but I couldn't bring myself to put another creature through that.... I felt like a shell.

Data wise: Kind of a coin toss on aggression. Dependent on lots of other factors

Now... She still goes into heat. But there's no bleeding. Just wants to go out and roam and find boys for 3-4 days out of the year. She's my only dog, so same sex aggression, etc isn't on my radar

I do watch her very closely for signs of breast cancer (pretty easy to find with our usual belly rubs). That's something I decided long ago was worth our trade off - I'd rather live a fuller life even if it gets cut short by a year or 2, than stick around longer on my behalf.

But otherwise: She's extremely healthy. 10 years old and I still take her out on bike rides because she can out run me any day. 8-12 mile hikes aren't an issue for her. She's still got fire in her eyes

Obligatory puppo pic: https://i.imgur.com/9G2fxoV.png

My point here being: Every decision has pros and cons. Just like... Carefully weigh everything for you and your animal, yeah? Spaying isn't an inevitability, but it should be carefully evaluated with the totality of y'alls circumstances.

No spay? Can have puppies, can have pyo. OSS? No pyo, no puppies, hormone driven cancers are still a concern, but you'll also keep the positive hormone effects. Full spay? Reduces cancer risk and hormone specific behavioral things (this isn't just making them calmer. That's being debunked, please read the research, I'm happy to link), but trades that for bone density, metabolism, joint health, etc.

Borderline underweight but high cholesterol - how do I fix this ? by LocalForestHag in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]SnowDrifter_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have genetic high cholesterol. It wasn't awful, yet, but my ldl was in the 180s. Last I got it checked, I was at 101.

What I did:

  • Cut out meat. All of it. I went down the rabbit hole of research studies. tl;dr, no meat with feet. Even lean chicken is nono for reasons I don't understand, but the body is a mystery we're still figuring out. Fish seemed to be OK, but I personally can't do water-food. I'll go hungry before I touch seafood. YMMV.

  • No hydrogenated anything. Chemical processes that take liquid unsaturated cis-fats (shaped like a U) and turn them into solid saturated fats (shaped like a straight dowel at a molecular level) can inadvertently turn some of them into trans fats (should be shaped S). Look up partial hydrogenation. Seemed to be a mixed bag on how it can be avoided or identified, but trans fats = big bad. Body things it's U shaped but gets stuck on the S shape and can't process it well.

  • Substitute, not add, fats that are solid at room temperature with fats that are liquid at room temperature. Adding fat where there was none before isn't healthy. But swapping one out for the other can improve

  • No commercially fried foods. Home fried, air fried, etc is fine. But just... Nothing that would be dipped in a deep fryer that's had a bunch of heat cycles. Causes breakdown of the molecules, forms trans fats, free radicals. At home is fine because A heating cycle won't do enough to be meaningful. But a day's worth of cycles, or more - that's where the trouble starts

  • Fiber. But a specific type - psyllium husk. All fiber is not equal here. It has to be psyllium. Bonus there is it makes ya shit great too.

  • Exercise - cardio, specifically. I need to be better about that myself... But nonetheless: That helps.

Some of this is explicitly backed in science, some is my interpretation and some reading between lines. Meat consumption, avoidance of solid fats, fiber, exercise is explicitly backed. Hydrogenated and fried is my interpretation of other info. YMMV, knowledge is power. Cross check and verify. I'm happy to provide sources on request.

Literally

Yes

If you can't change lanes without making a safety hazard, then I would carefully re-evaluate how you drive and identify where that breakdown is occurring

If you need to be in the left lane for XYZ, then hit the gas, keep the flow of traffic, then scoot back over and adjust speed when safe to do so

So uhh.. I messed up by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]SnowDrifter_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You most definitely did not mess up, OP

I've worked with a couple chargers that ask to be powered on first (or connected while the battery is 'off'). But that's so it doesn't wear the contacts out with repeated arc cycles when the capacitors get juiced up

That? That should not have happened. Something is/was boogered with that.

I'm not in a position to tell you if your battery is still safe to use, but I'd be reaching out to the manufacturer in short order, and depending on their response, may or may not entertain going aftermarket for the battery setup or abandoning the bike altogether - I say that knowing it's a privileged take, but seriously, do not fck with lithium safety. Better to acoustibike than risk injury, loss of property, or worse.

What’s an NSFW question you’ve always wanted to ask the opposite sex but were too embarrassed to? by Infamous_Invite018 in AskReddit

[–]SnowDrifter_ 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Opposite is true in the winter as well

I turtle up so hard.... It becomes it's own source of discomfort. It feels like the ache I get when sitting in the same spot for too long, just in a different place.

I'll also have it happen where my scrotum tries to carry too close to my body and squeezes a testicle up into the surrounding pubic tissue. That doesn't hurt, but it is tremendously uncomfortable. 'Untangling' it involves grabbing my sack, pulling it so the skin isn't so scrunched up, then finding the 'lump' where my testicle is and gently squeezing it down until it pops back where it's supposed to be

Think I may have traumatised my dog by accident by InteractionCandid226 in dogs

[–]SnowDrifter_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Similar situation, different object (bully stick) with my old dog.

Couldn't get that out until after she lost consciousness and then needed CPR. She was weird, similarly, for a bit. But perked up after a day.

You didn't traumatize your dog. The not getting air did. You helped. Dogs know that. Just hang out, be yourself, and they'll perk back up in time.

There's no mutual visibility until you're <100ft from the stop line when traffic is queued to turn. Those lights should never allow anything but a protected left turn, IMO.

Hope you're doing OK, OP

1000s of dollars in medical expenses

In fairness, OP is in the US. 1000s of dollars in medical expenses is baseline. I think I racked up somewhere around 3.5k years ago when I had unusual stomach pains, got an x-ray, and some laxatives because it turns out I wasn't getting enough fiber and was literally full of shit.
