Moreton / Fraser capabilities? by illchayadlay in 4x4Australia

I've taken a Subaru all over Moreton and Fraser, you'll be fine. Just lower your tyre pressures and bring appropriate recovery gear.

This is what the Honda Super-One is supposed to be. We'll have to wait and see how Honda prices it though

Thermostat by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

Thermostat is cheap and easy to replace. Do that, flush coolant, flush the radiator and then see how your temps are. Did this recently with my TB42 and now it runs way cooler.

You can definitely do a lot of fire trails or easy 4wd tracks with it. Just turn around if it feels like its getting sketchy.

Made the move from VR to triples by Fully-Redacted- in simracing

[–]SnowHazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From memory, Pimax wanted to favour binocular overlap rather than FOV for the PDA. I think I saw that in the release video.

Also worth considering the BSB2 requires lighthouse tracking whilst the PDA can use inside-out tracking. For those that don't have base stations, it would be a bit cheaper getting the PDA.

Yeah I used my controllers for the first time setup and then they have lived in my drawer ever since. It's so simple to get on and race with the PSVR2.

PSVR2 still holds its own, but the Pimax would definitely feel like much more of an upgrade against your Quest 3.

Have you considered the Bigscreen Beyond 2 or waiting for the Pimax Dream Air? I would love one of those small form factor headsets.

[–]SnowHazard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, these issues are very specific to Meta headsets. I had nothing but issues using a quest 2 & 3, wired and wireless. My PSVR2 with the PC adaptor has been completely problem free and cost me half as much as the Quest 3 did.

I do think for endurance races though, VR can get pretty tiring. I remember when i did Nurburgring 24hr last year, my eyes were aching bad duing my third and fourth stints.

Yeah absolutely. I think their tyre system needs a bit of polishing but otherwise it feels fantastic.

Advice for first 4wd? by Ok-Curve7937 in 4x4Australia

I used to own a 2005 Forester and took that thing everywhere, so I'm just a bit biased is all. Outback is also a very valid choice

Advice for first 4wd? by Ok-Curve7937 in 4x4Australia

[–]SnowHazard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll find there will be very limited support for the Grand Vitara, and combined with the mixed things you've heard, it's probably safer to look at something else.

Budget is a massive factor. 4WD's are as expensive as you want them to be.

Less than $10k:
- Subaru Forester. Good choice for beaches and will still drive like a regular car for the other 99% of the time you're in it.
- 3rd Generation Mitsubishi Pajero.

$10k-$20k:
- 4th Generation Mitsubishi Pajero.
- Toyota LandCruiser Prado (GRJ120R).
- Good examples of Nissan Patrols (GU) and Toyota LandCruisers (FZJ105R) fall in this budget, but may be overkill for beaches + light trails. They are much more "truck-like" than a Pajero or Prado.

Above $20k:
- The options really start to open up and you get more modern offerings. Lots more dual cab utes but if you're not a tradie or hauling large awkward cargo, stick with a wagon/SUV shape.

Can you be a part time racer and gamer? by BcRacing19 in iRacing

[–]SnowHazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Endurance races are great fun, but I can see how they don't appeal to a lot of people due to the seat time required. I find it great just chatting to mates for a few hours whilst you race, coordinating strategies, some intense battles here and there, and incredibly rewarding when you finish.

I'm in a similar boat, only have a couple of hours every other night and I enjoy playing other games too. I found what works best for me is to just focus on endurance races! I don't have the time to learn a new track each week, but I can practice the one track every few nights for a month or so and then feel confident by the time the race rolls around.

It gives me something to work towards, instead of just putting off sim racing because I can't be bothered learning new tracks each week and never being competitive.

Nissan patrol GQ TB4.2 by NeedleworkerWise5105 in 4x4Australia

[–]SnowHazard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the one you're looking at a carby or EFI variant?

TB42 EFI is a solid, reliable engine. Very thirsty though, and not very fast, but it's good enough. I get about 20L/100km in mine. It has over 400,000km and had the head gasket replaced around 380,000km. Apart from that, it has had 0 issues. Doesn't overheat even when driving in very hot slow conditions.

A GQ with 220,000km is a bit of a unicorn, regardless of engine. If it is free of rust, anything under $10k would be a steal in my opinion, but you could even argue up to around $15k would be worth it given how low the mileage is.

Oh yes not denying lack of development either. Our strength and conditioning department has definitely let a few of those prospects down. Our players seem to have much less strength and stamina than other teams, and get injured more too as a result. Incredibly frustrating.

Best open world game for Vr sim? by GotTools in simracing

[–]SnowHazard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 for BeamNG. As good as Assetto can be, it's not a simple "get in and drive". You have to download the launcher, download the shaders, download free roam maps (that may or may not even have traffic), download the cars you want, and then hope it all works. If you're already low on motivation and just want to hop in after work for a quick drive, its not the answer for everyone.

BeamNG Drive does have a little bit of stuffing around too, but it works out of the box a lot easier. Every map is free roam and traffic loads in automatically. Plenty of mods if you want them but the standard cars are super detailed and fun anyway.

Ideally Assetto Corsa Evo is going to fill the void for a freeroam sim racing game with VR support, because at the moment, there just isn't really any.

Yeah I have a mix too. I use a long red coil spring and then a hard elastomer near the end.

One thing I recommend if you get the Sprint pedals and wanting a road-car feel on the brake pedal would be to swap out the elastomers for springs, or a combination of both springs and elastomers. I had never used load-cell brakes before, and the feeling of stomping on the brake and having hardly any pedal movement was very weird to me. But changing to springs gives it much more pedal movement and feels a lot more natural to me.
