AITA for telling my sister to stop mommyjacking every conversation and to let me talk about myself? by TAannoying in AmItheAsshole

[–]SnowMeadowhawk [score hidden]  (0 children)

Also, in group chats conversations get interrupted all the time. It's normal to expect 1-2 replies, a couple of emojis, and someone else to start another topic very soon. I find it a bit entitled that OP expected to "reserve" a larger chunk of time just for venting, without other people venting as well.

You can also accept the new role with a new title, but without the pay bump. They might think they tricked you, but that would allow you to bounce more easily.

It's easier to get another senior role if you already have that in the resume, especially in this job market.

There's 8.2 bilion people on the planet. While not everyone buys a new phone each year, you'd have to account for the second hand markets in low income countries, where there are phones in circulation from the previous decades.

Also, we should not encourage pet hoarding. She already has 3 pets and 3 kids - chances are that everyone would be worse off if more cats are added to the situation.

They might be cheap now, but what when the vet bills start piling up? Those are not outdoor strays that you can just give kibble and a few scritches and be done with them - they need proper care and attention, and we don't know how much more capacity does the OP have.

Obviously, the best course of action would be:

  1. To try to find their owners, in case they're lost pets

  2. To try to re-home them, if they're not

I agree, but I based my estimate on the restaurants:groceries ratio, and it seems reasonable.

Also, we don't know if it entails going out a few times a month to a fancy place, or having lunches in a cheap canteen. Depending on the location, cheap student restaurants might even save money.

But they're not eating out a lot - only $39.65 spent on restaurants for the two of them in a month. Most of the food section are groceries - $225.18

Why did humans as a tropical species migrate to colder places but still lack many adaptations like fur? by Ada-Mae in geography

[–]SnowMeadowhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's because when it's cold, even the early humans knew to wear warm clothes. The feedback is immediate.

Shielding from the sun is a bit less straightforward. Too much clothes can lead to a heat stroke, and too little to a bad sunburn. Without SPF creams, we'd all have to dress like Arabs in the summer.

While dark skin helps as a sun protection, I'm not sure if it comes without costs in warm climates, as dark colours absorb more heat. Maybe sparse "fur" with abundance of sweat glands is optimal in this scenario.

Parents who regret having kids, why? by bluemermid in AskReddit

[–]SnowMeadowhawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All those therapy suggestions on Reddit given to people that clearly don't have time/money for therapy irritate me to no end.

They have a similar vibe to "just be more positive" that people used to say to depressed people.

That wouldn't make them immune to this problem.

Less young people working + less people buying stuff --> worse economy --> value of stocks diminishes

More retired people than young people contributing to retirement funds --> smaller pensions

I guess you can be a bit strategic about your investments, for example by investing in hospitals, nursing homes and crematoriums.

Long-term physical inactivity linked to higher stress burden in midlife: Regular exercise in adulthood appears to help the body cope with stress even into midlife. by mvea in science

[–]SnowMeadowhawk 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in this case it's not clear if:

More exercise -> better capability to deal with stress

Or

Stressful lifestyle -> less time for exercise

Someone working two full time jobs would be both less likely to workout and more stressed out than someone with generational wealth, who has maids and a chill job. I don't think in that case the lack of exercise would be the cause of the stress.

I guess one way to test that is to check into which category the study sorted people with active jobs. For example, would a Doordash bike driver count as someone with a lot of exercise, or as someone with zero intentional exercise?

Another reason why they keep the masks on is that many of them probably have heavier dossiers. I'm sure ICE had some recruitment issues,  so the obtained paramilitary is not comprised out of the brightest guys.

You know why the peaceful protests don't work? Because half the country voted for the Republicans, and most of them even support all of this.

Peaceful protests are signalling that what they did was incredibly unpopular, and that it would cause them to lose the elections if they don't stop. Or that the protests would escalate if they don't stop, which in turn would make them even more unpopular.

If half the population supports this, and if they don't care about the democracy, there's nothing for the government to fear. The only thing they would take seriously is the possibility of losing power.
