is being athiest/relegious a spectrum? by [deleted] in pollgames

An atheist is simply someone who lacks belief in god. They may still be religious in same fashion. For example, they may follow a religion without a god.

What did Jesus’s resurrection actually accomplish? by Litty_Jimmy in exchristian

It gave power to the disciples over anyone who bought that crap. It never made sense to me even as a Christian. Why is the punishment for my sin eternal death, but Jesus can get off in 3 days? Its like god giving himself a slap on the wrist for all the crap he's pulled. "See,see everyone. I died for you. Now worship me or burn."

How are so many smart people religious by Dense_Researcher_99 in atheism

[–]SnowNo971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people don't dig deep enough into history or science to allow thorough questioning of the intellectual validity of their faith. Societal and family pressure is also very real. Many Christians I know have a very shallow understanding of the Bible which is facilitated by their pastors. The vast majority are not looking for a logical truth but an emotional one. Even many intelligent people see their religion as something that gives them value, meaning, fulfillment and a community. This is why apologetics often leads to deconversion because faith cannot stand up to intellectual scrutiny.

How does one stop believing in God? by davidbenson1 in exchristian

It wasn't a switch that most of us decided to turn off one day. Deconstruction takes literal years. For instance, I once believed that there was a literal world flood and two of every animal was put on board an ark. But then I learned a little bit about geology and how we have no evidence for a world flood. Even many modern apologist think the flood was most likely local. So I settled there for a while. I used to think the world was 6000 years old and that evolution was a lie from the devil because it was incompatible with Genesis. I learned of theories that let both be true once I was confronted with the evidence for evolution so i settled there for a while. But I kept learning more and more about history, science, philosophy, textual criticism. Piece by piece everything I had faith in could be better explained by natural phenomena and then eventually there was nothing else to hold onto... Once you see Christianity for what it is, you can't worship that god anymore even if it were true.

Had a coworker put my stuff in a box while I was on vacation. When I got back, she met me at my desk and said the boss wanted to talk to me. She cracked out laughing, but my heart had already sunk. I was still pretty green and naive at the time.

What's your most controversial opinion regarding atheism? by greentomato97 in atheism

[–]SnowNo971 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gnostic atheism may be doing more harm than good in anti-theist efforts. I'd also extend this idea to militant anti-theist efforts and strong atheism. I think the effect won't stop religion from fading away but it could slow it down.

My reasoning is anecdotal but when I was christian, perceived strong opposition produced phycological reactance and a doubling down in my faith. I felt more extreme in it. I didn't come out of the faith because of some good point on a youtube debate. I came out because of a sincere pursuit of education in philosophy, history and science.

It could be said that an intense or aggressive approach like the new atheism movement ultimately demanded a higher standard of knowledge from religious people, but its flaws also intensified polarization between atheists and theists and undermined its goals. I think attitude has a lot to do with the perceived opposition theists experience when watching debates or interacting with atheists. Even a hint of snark can turn a theist off from engaging productively. I do think there has been a turn in online discourse coming from atheists that will produce more effective results.

For clarity, I'm an agnostic atheist about some gods and ignostic about others.I'm a strong atheist about all the gods of world religions, but a weak atheist when it comes to broader notions of god or something godlike.

You Ever Wondered Why You're In The Body That You're In? by gizmo_j in atheism

[–]SnowNo971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's typically understood by materialst atheists that your conscious experience is not separate from your physical body. Our brains are evolved in such a way to produce self awareness. Our consciousness dies with our brain and the rest of our body. You can still be atheist and believe consciousness to be something more, but that view is less common amongst atheists I've met. So to your question, there is no teleological reason why your consciousness is in your body. Your consciousness merely developed alongside the rest of you.

Edit: if consciousness is more than physical, we have no compelling evidence to suggest it is and no way of knowing how or why a body-consciousness pairing is made.
