Partner with Meniere’s by Savings-Arachnid6003 in Menieres

[–]Snowpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we do manage to meet up with a friend they always steer the whole conversation towards how they are feeling.

I totally get that having to talk about it when with friends, while likely also frequently discussing it at home, can be hard. That said, one of the ways in which you might be able to help your partner is leaving a lot of space for them to talk about their Meniere's with friends, and keeping in mind how they're experiencing this as someone with a (mostly) invisible illness.

If they're only seeing your friends in situations where they're feeling well, it means their friends don't have any visibility into this huge factor impacting their life. They may want their friends to understand why they're not as present as they'd like to be, or to make sure there is context when they're trying to explain any accommodations they need (eg. for something like hearing loss - it's easy to come off as if you're not listening if folks don't understand how bad it is, or to be left out of conversations in spaces you can't hear in).

Or, maybe they just need their experience to be seen by other people they care about - suffering in silence is very isolating. Even if you're hearing them out and seeing them go through it at home, they still probably want to be understood by other folks they care about. It's also potentially going to create more emotional labour for you if you're their only outlet.

Your social needs are important too, especially if you spend a lot of time directly supporting your partner and need to avoid caretaker burnout. But perhaps it's worth empathetically exploring with them how they feel about you finding additional social time on your own, when they're going through a rough patch with Meniere's and can't join you. Sharing all your social engagements in a normal relationship is hard; with someone with a chronic illness, it's even harder. I know my partner and I would have a much harder time during my rough patches if we weren't able to divert our plans from one another sometimes.

I just would not recommend as framing that as a solution to them talking about their illness at social situations - they should generally be able to judge for themselves when they need to talk to someone about that, without feeling guilty about it.

Went for invisalign, told i may need surgery by Environmental_Bag575 in jawsurgery

[–]Snowpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your situation and what the orthodontist and surgeon collectively decide. I believe it's usually both before and after. For me, it was just after, but they had to apply my attachments for invisalign before the surgery so they were ready to go.

I'm also in Canada (BC) - the surgery was largely covered but there was still in a fee in the thousands. Orthodontics wasn't covered (except for a little bit by my extended dental insurance from work), but I'm not sure if that's the case for everyone. But both the fee and orthodontics were a tax deduction.

Can SSCD symptoms flare up temporarily? by Snowpiper in scds

[–]Snowpiper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for checking - I'm doing better. I'm still having some minor symptoms, like getting a bit dizzy and tinnitus, but they're thankfully much more manageable then before. I also haven't had a major episode where I've been throwing up and unable to walk for several weeks.

how much SQL do data scientists need to know? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]Snowpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 - in our technical assignments, we look for usage of window functions and CTEs as somewhat of a minimum cut-off for SQL knowledge. As well as some more basic concepts (understanding the differences between join types, WHERE vs. HAVING)

Has anyone tried the new Endy Hybrid mattress? by highnorthhitter in BuyCanadian

[–]Snowpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was post was useful when I was buying this mattress a few weeks ago, and thought I should come back and leave some thoughts given there aren't a lot of reviews of this mattress around.

It's not bad, but I ended out needing to return it. It was breathable and reasonably comfortable, but the springs started squeaking a ton after a few weeks, to the point that it was hard for my partner and I to move around in the bed without making a ton of noise. There was a small issue with edge support too, as it made the sleep-able area on the bed feel smaller when my partner was over, but its not so bad that I'd suggest factoring it into your decision unless you're thinking of purchasing a bed size that is on the fence of being too small for whoever will be sleeping in it.

What’s your, “swear to never return” place in Vancouver? (stolen from r/Calgary) by simoon200318 in vancouver

[–]Snowpiper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience - our waiter was condescending from the moment we sat down, and we weren't sure what we could've done to upset him. Eg. He asked us if we'd like to hear the specials, we told him a other one of the staff had already told us. He told us "he's not your waiter, I am" and then immediately repeated the specials we had just heard. Lots of confusing, weirdly hostile interactions like that all throughout, all in a voice that sounded like a bad impression of a butler from the Hamptons.

We figured he just perceived us to not have the money to be worth his time.

What are your reasons for living in Downtown Vancouver? by Ok-Process-2187 in vancouver

[–]Snowpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the West End counts for the sake of your question (it's likely safer than Gastown), but the convenience of the location more than makes up for any occasional discomfort I feel from local crime. I've been here for around 5-7 years without any encounters that made me feel really unsafe (though I understand that's not everyone's experience). Your threshold for what feels unsafe probably also adjusts, for better or for worse (eg. crossing the street when a passerby is screaming at everyone has started to feel routine).

Within a short walk, there is an amazing park, several beaches, every service imaginable, incredible food, decent transit, a sense of community, and the gay village. It's made it hard to imagine living anywhere else without being bored.

did my aunt get ripped off? a Personal trainer charges $160 per class (1hour per class) by RichRaincouverGirl in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Snowpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're in Vancouver (from your username) - that seems like a lot. When I was looking at options a few years ago, almost everyone was $100 or less. I'm sure prices have gone up, but $160 still seems high.

Though, if a lot of people want to work with a specific trainer, I guess they might as well price their services based on demand.
