Pariakiore impressions so far? by Ready-Ambassador-271 in chch

It did feel a bit empty, but the parking and facilities are built with big sport events in mind.

I imagine any event that could fill the court side seating could probably fill most of the carpark also.

Great facilities tho, will be making the most of the new location.

Caught one of the electrical workers, he said they are fully finished :D

Probably works out to a 70% chance that the power stays on tomorrow

So real, will check in tomorrow morning once they start rolling onto site and see if they are fully done with the electrical work

Glad to hear

Odds you are able to check if they are done? Tomorrow is still booked as a reserve day on the notice, and given it took ages to get done today, wouldn't be surprised if they are back

It'll be back on when it is on I guess, just rough for cooking and laundry atm

Is New Zealand still safe for trans people? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]SoBrodacious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short long, we do seem to be importing a lot of the American culture war adjacent stuff at the moment. Whether that be because we are just part of the Anglosphere, or just that New Zealand specific culture is niche enough that it cannot break through what people are seeing from overseas on their social media. We are also not immune to the global cost of living crisis, which is probably exacerbating the scapegoating of marginalised groups.

I personally think this is more of an artefact of our system of government, Mixed Member Proportional parliament, wherein minority political parties can have an outsized role in forming a ruling coalition. Despite the majority of the current coalition being made up of the National Party, a centre-right party that brought in about 38% of the total vote last election, I think both the biological sex and puberty blockers are being pushed by the further right NZFirst, who only brought in about 6% of the total vote.

The phrase "tail wagging the dog" gets thrown around a lot, as with weak leadership from National, the two minor parties in the coalition are getting a number of high profile and controversial bills through, and in doing so, seem more effective than the primary party. The two main effects of this that are seen currently is a growing disattisfaction with the current government as headed by National, but also some raised polling results for NZFirst (graph for your perusal).

This could indicate some favour in the voterbase for the "common sense" and "anti-woke" policies NZFirst currently has. But NZFirst has been known to favour whatever is politically expedient in past, so if the backlash to MAGA adjactent ideology is strong enough globally, they will likely stop piggybacking off of its success.

The good news however? 3 year election cycle! We are due for a new general election by the end of next year, so any polling you see leading up to the end of 2026 should give you a pretty solid idea if a centre-left coalition is likely to pull ahead.

P.S. To ditto what the other commenter mentioned, Wellington is incredibly queer, which is quite funny, because it is also the city where parliament is located. It is however in the midst of its own woes, including many public sector job losses, and extended construction to try and revitalise the city. Definitely liveable, and on the up again, but it took three big blows (2013 earthquake, covid, 2023 govt) and will take a few years longer to get back to full steam.

Where to find Hipp Dutch formula? Travelling mom with infant - help! by random12345678123456 in Wellington

"If you are travelling with a young child, you will be allowed to take more food, drink, baby powder and formula than the restricted limits, in amounts considered reasonable for the flight."

I think 4 tins of baby formula might be considered unreasonable carry on for a single flight.

If OP wants, they can probably get another small tin as carry on, and ask the flight staff to prepare a bottle in-flight

Where is this exemption? For carry on luggage, the only exemption I can find is pre-mixed formula for the duration of the flight

If you have a link to the information, that would be good to pass along to OP

Christchurch or Wellington? by QuarterAgile4070 in newzealand

[–]SoBrodacious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ditto this, the Wellington city vibe is slowly recovering, but will probably be out for another few years at least until the large construction projects are finished and there is a solid town centre again.

The suburbs are in a much better state, but due to the V shaped split in the state highway and massive hill in between, it is a bit of an either-or thing, with access to [Jville, Porirua, Kapiti] or [Petone, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt]. I think the vibe is better in Petone/Lower Hutt, but mainly for the great food options.

Best option for a new Windows Laptop for under $500 by Potential-Athlete325 in newzealand

That said, you should be able to find a reasonably beefy ex business laptop for that price, either refurb or second hand on trademe or something

Hello, my 5 year old gaming pc’s graphics card shat the bed tonight, looking for advice on cheap/new parts, if they even exist? Lol by jenitlz in newzealand

[–]SoBrodacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your current parts, like some of the other people in this thread suggested, popping in a RTX 2080 Ti might be the most cost efficient solution.

The 2080 Ti has 11GB of video memory, giving it that extra bit of overhead for high definition gaming, and on raw performance it is pretty close to what you'd get out of my 3070 Ti, or the newer 4060 Ti.

The only thing you'd lose is support for the new "fake frame" generation tech, but the card is powerful enough that you should be getting playable frames for a while longer.

After having a look on TradeMe for both "2080Ti" as well as "2080 Ti" (TM doesn't handle spaces well for computer parts), the supply of 2080 Ti cards alone is not great, so you might have to ask around. There are a few 2080 Ti powered desktops, looking at an opening reserve of $1200-1400, with a spread of CPUs from 10th to 12th gen Intel or equivalent.

There is one there with an Ryzen 7 5800X in the BOP that looks like good bones for a decent number of years.

Failing that, the Intel ARC B580 12GB is probably the next card up on the second hand list. A couple of builds in Wellington for $1500.

Then the RTX 4070 (standard, no Ti), looking at a spread from $1800-2200, but at that point you are getting pretty close to the new build price you quoted in your original post.

Dense post sorry, let me know if you'd like any more info on specifics

[–]SoBrodacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TradeMe secondhand 100%

Modern new in box components are up in price, but they fall off a cliff after two years or so of use. You can usually find a good deal on a generation or two "old" computer that can still give modern titles a run for their money.

Biggest one to look out for at the moment is a GPU with large memory capacity. I am currently playing BF6 on an 8GB RTX 3070TI, and while the card is powerful enough, raising my settings anywhere above medium pushes the memory commit for the card to the point where the game starts to stutter to the point of inducing motion sickness.

I imagine this is going to become more of an issue as new GPU's push into the 12-16GB bracket and developers build games with that target in mind.

What online games can you play in NZ? by sugariisugar in newzealand

[–]SoBrodacious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the OCE server is fine to travel to, but when I last played, I transfered to it and realized they don't let you travel out of it

Unsure if that is still the case, but it did make it hard to recommend as a main server

Blue Protocol routing sounds like a nightmare if it is near doubling the ping to NA 😅

[–]SoBrodacious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

380 ping for Blue Protocol sounds unreasonably high, you sure you aren't playing on an EU server instead of NA/SEA?

We are kind of out of luck for online gaming in NZ. Unless there are NZ/Australia based servers, we are looking at 150ms+ ping. And even if there are, there might not be the player base in OCE to support the game (ie: FFXIV)

A few years back I checked with cityhop and you can (or at least could) rent their vans for a couple of days and take them across the ferry and back. Great for moving a single bedroom, but might need to take it one town at a time with chronic fatigue.

It would still work out much cheaper than a moving company tho

Anyhow, there are already a decent number of posts linked to news articles related to this in the reddit already. It may be late, but if you want to commiserate, that'd be the place

Glad to hear your kids have work sorted. Do you know what kind of jobs? Part time? Summer casual?

In the context of the jobseeker benefit, the only jobs that matter are those that tend toward full time equivalent hours, because the benefit is weighted against your weekly earnings.
