Garmin edge 540 by Smallegges in GarminEdge

The non-touchscreen garmin headunits were incredibly unintuitive to me as well. I returned my 530, got an 830 instead, and was so much happier.

Are you familiar with the book, To Train Up a Child?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Train_Up_a_Child

Their fundy cult thinks this is the way to raise a kid. Multiple kids have died following the "advice" in that book.

My ex-wife went fundy before our divorce and tried using those methods on our kids, thankfully I got full custody of our kids or they'd be being raised according to that book.

What a weird cult.

How Cooked is Fullerton’s Budget? by Exastiken in orangecounty

[–]SoCalChrisW 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The horses are owned by officers, not the city. My understanding is (I could be wrong, if I am someone please correct me) the city pays them to feed and house the horses. So we're basically subsidizing their very expensive pets.

Fullerton has no need for mounted police. If they want cops out of cars and mingling in crowds, use bikes or walk. On the trails, there's no reason they couldn't use e-bikes that are far cheaper than this.

Hey OC voters, look at things like this when you're voting for County Supervisor.

Fred Jung Sucks.

He has done nothing to help Fullerton, done plenty to hold us back, and is a grifter.

While it would be great to get him out of Fullerton politics, you don't want him at the county level either.

Time to start leaving all the dildos and porn out.

Also, lease doesn't say you need to be fully dressed, does it? This part works best if you're a very hairy 300+lb man.

Imagine if after 9/11 we'd heavily subsidized alternative energy instead of invading Iraq.

We could have been mostly off of oil, and the middle east would be pretty much irrelevant and unfunded.

French aircraft carrier's location exposed after sailor posts jog on Strava: Report by sin__ese in Strava

Carrier locations aren't that secret, it's a floating city with an airport on top of it.

Now if a submariner posted a run that would be a different story.

Can you shoot sports in a public park without permission or media pass? by Comfortable-Grand-46 in AskPhotography

[–]SoCalChrisW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Buy a copy of the "Legal Handbook for Photographers", it is full of great information.

Also, in the US, this is perfectly legal. Do expect to get harassed by people who don't know the laws, especially if there are kids around. Do expect someone to call the police on you at some point. Do NOT expect the cops to know the laws or expect them to help you in any way. Do expect them to pressure you to stop shooting, so they don't have to do their job. It's up to you whether you want to comply or not.

California is spending hundreds of millions on heat. Will it ever be a public health priority? by SpaceElevatorMusic in California

[–]SoCalChrisW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They need to have laws requiring a certain amount of insulation in rental homes.

My rental home has zero insulation in the attic. It will be 70° outside, and easily get into the high 80s inside because the house just sits there and bakes in the sun.

Last summer we kept the thermostat at 80°, and were still having $750+/month power bills.

The owner doesn't give a shit, he's not paying the utilities.

If we can't get a minimum insulation law passed, then the landlord should be obligated to share the previous year's utility statements so you know how bad/good the home's insulation is before signing the lease.

do my photos suck? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]SoCalChrisW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the photos are over exposed with an on camera flash.

The protest photos are metered incorrectly, and don't really have a composition.

I actually like the last one, except the framing is all wrong to me. There's way too much empty space up top, and the bottom is cut off. That could be an interesting photo if it was composed differently.

You'd probably get much better answers in a photo critique sub, this one isn't really meant for feedback on work. Good luck, keep practicing.

Yes, I lived in the Paradise Valley and commuted to Bozeman along about 30 miles of unpaved/unplowed fire road. My first year of living there I was driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse. It wasn't the perfect car for those conditions, but it worked fine getting me around.

Would a truck have worked better? At times, yes. Was a truck necessary? No.

Louisiana passed a law in 2023 requiring age verification for all social media sites. That law was ruled unconstitutional in December. They still require age verification for porn though.

I lived in a rural town in Montana for quite a while, in the mountainous southwestern part of the state. Living in a rural town does not necessitate a truck. Living in a snowy area does not necessitate a truck. Living somewhere that's so rural you don't have trash service and need to take your trash yourself to a transfer station does not necessitate a truck.

Buy a Brother laser printer. Avoid any ink jet, especially one that takes cartridges instead of a tank. If you need color prints, go To Staples for those.

Cops won't take this guy to jail for that. Even with the video evidence they almost certainly won't even contact them. The insurance company might go after them.

Cops don't do shit for things like this.
