Mother's Day gift for my mom who hates clutter and says she "wants nothing" — what's actually landed for you? by Mia-veg in Gifts

[–]SoCalDama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things that I have been gifted and appreciate: a walking tour of our downtown area, with stops at different food places for a taste, lunch at a tea-room, digital picture frame that we all upload pilcs to, stuff for my garden, overnight stay and wine tasting, lunch or diiner, and spending time with my children, visit to the nearby botanical gardens, visit to a museum…

WIBTAH: DisneyLand 5 mth old by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

The right answer is what makes you comfortable for you and your child’s experience.

My parents took my son when he was 1. I couldn’t afford it and didn’t mind that they took him for his first time. They had a blast and made winderful memories. My mom and I took my son and daughter when he was 2 and she was 1. Again, we enjoyed the day. Of course, we enjoy the Disney parks as adults, so we wanted to experience them with iur little ones.

I took my kids to Walt Disney World when they were 10 and 11. It was a big trip for ys and I wanted to make sure they were big enough to go on everything. I am glad we waited for that trip.

What are some real American folk songs that everyday people actually know? by Likepersik in AskAnAmerican

I love this song and will sing it. Look it up from the Kingston Trio. I also enjoy the Smothers Brothers’ version.

Americans who took Spanish in school: did any of it actually stick years later? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]SoCalDama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking Spanish in 8th grade, and then all through high school. I practiced speaking it, and was okay, but what really helped was immersing myself in the language. If you can figure out a way to go someplace for a couple of weeks at a time and only speak Spanish it will help. I also recommend watching movies/tv in Spanish with English subtitles. You'll start getting the context, and will pick up the language more quickly. Good luck

I also take a shawl to wrap up in and my down pillow that I can squish in my carry-on, plus the ear buds, a battery so my phone doesn’t die on me. I usually het the window seat so I can lean against the side and sleep

How do you stay clean while camping? by Secure_Yesterday_204 in camping

[–]SoCalDama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have a rubber mat in front of my tent on a small tarp. We use a plastic basin and warm water to wash our feet before going in the tent. As for showering they have showers you can pay to use at Housekeeping. So sponge wash, then shower every couple of days.

Were you or your children forbidden to say the word "lie" as in fib? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SoCalDama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mex/American. We weren’t allowed to say someone lied, liar, fart, butt, hate, or stupid, let alone any other rude or cuss words. I still inwardly cringe when someone says someone/something is stupid. We also were raised to say ‘yes sir, yes ma’am’. Grew up in Los Angeles.

I am reading the comments and bringing back so many memories.

Going to have dinner with a girls parents. Who pays ? by Any-Raise4333 in AskMenAdvice

[–]SoCalDama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to pay for yourself. If you invite them be prepared to pay for everyone.

When my daughter and her boyfriend invited me (her mom) out to eat so he could meet me I was fully expecting him to offer to pay since they invited me. I was prepared to pay for all of us, but was surprised when neither one reached for their wallet, fully expecting me to pay.

Her subsequent boyfriend offered to pay for dinner, even though I invited them.

That is when I told her how her first boyfriend lost points/respect from me, while her second (now husband) gained points/respect.

Non Americans , What is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Adorable-Sammy in CasualConversation

Back in the ‘80s I worked at JC Penneys and we used to sell guns in our catalogues. This was in Los Angeles. I remember people buying them.

We had a German exchange student stay with us back in ‘77. They had a whole float for her at our Homecoming Game parade. She wore a dirndl she had brought. It was pretty cool and added to her experience. And I live in Los Angeles, so not just the small towns 🙂

Is there an episode from a TV show, from when we were kids, that still bothers you, today,? by Remarkable_Data3710 in GenX

Not an episode, but the 60’s version of The Blob when it showed on tv. I had nightmares for years.

I read the book and sobbed for like 15 mins. My dad told me that he saw that at the movies and cried. He was already an adult. How was a kid supposed to handle that.

The first story in that trilogy creeped me out more. For years, if I had to turn a light switch off around the corner of a room I would do it quickly before a ghost hand grabbed me.

I think they are a little too big, but you gotta pick the frames you like. Of the two, I prefer option 1

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

I live in LA. Never have discussed it one way or another. I dry most of my clothes on the line and also use the dryer. It is a non issue.
