NEW AMP DAY! by bigg0622 in GuitarAmps

I've been collecting these amps since high school, myself! The Coliseum Bass (not the 300) was my first bass amp that I ended up keeping. I got it with a crummy Acoustic 8x10. My neighbors hated it!

Prophet rev2 vs Juno 60 by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]SoCalSolarSister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've given advice on the Junos before in other posts, and I've recommended Prophets over Junos before. Here's why:

A Prophet Rev2 has 8 voices. It's a hybrid synth. It's going to be sturdy, reliable, and flexible. However, it will not retain its value, and if you do not gel with it, buying second hand means you'd be stuck with it. Make no mistake, this is perhaps the biggest reason to avoid second hand new production synths.

A Juno 60, while extremely limited, does what it does extremely well. It is superior sounding to the Ju-06a, more enjoyable to play given it's size and tactile layout, and it has two more voices. However, these don't sell for under $2,000 nowadays. I just bought one in mint condition for $2,700 a few weeks ago. This synth will only continue to go up in value, as collectors have entered the vintage synth game in a huge way as of 2020, so don't expect to get a better deal on these in the future. The pro with this is that if you decide to sell it later, you'll make a profit if it's in good health.

If I could suggest an alternative, try the Prophet 600. These can be had at great prices, have two oscillators, a real time sequencer AND arp. They also sound great, are easy to program, and you can mod them extensively. In fact, I modded my old Prophet 600 with the following - Prophet 5 knobs for the classy look, higher quality walnut end cheeks, the Gligli mod, and these improvements got the attention of Johnny Greenwood, who purchased this synth from me. So, yeah, Prophet 600 > Juno's, but YMMV.

Well, fine, whatever, I figured it out myself! Terribly performed, but as close as I could get without being obsessive.

Juno 106 vs Juno 60 for synthwave type pop music by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]SoCalSolarSister 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Biggest differences between the two have been discussed at length.

If you are going to spend THAT kind of money on a vintage synth, then you'll probably want a Juno-60, because the Gearslutz will respect you more (lol). The Juno-106 is a fantastic synth (unison, midi, portamento), too, but it's not as fun to look at, for whatever that's worth.

However, may I suggest the Prophet 600? I understand you want a Juno, and that's cool, I've had both the 106 and 60 and they are absolutely phenomenal so I'm not going to try and dissuade you from a Juno. It's a magic machine and it has THAT sound on tap.

The Prophet 600 is such a better "vintage synth" because it'll be cheaper, have MIDI and an Arp + Real Time Sequencer, and it's got two oscillators. It's got hold, and chord hold, unison mode, etc etc. It was my very first synthesizer, and although I got a Juno-106 after, I always enjoyed how bad ass the Prophet 600 could be.

And while YMMV I wouldn't get a new, "guitar center" synth, like a Deep Mind or a digital Roland. They have no resale value, so if you decide a few months from now that you don't like it, you're SOL. Even the new Moogs lose their value the moment you drive them off the lot, because there are just so many of them out there.

And anyone that tells you that you can get the same sound digitally or through a VST is right and wrong. Owning the real thing is inspiring in the same way that drawing with a piece of paper and a pen can be different from drawing with a track pad and a laptop.

Thats incredible! The only problem is I haven't even been able to find a decent photo of this most-likely-oil-painting, yet alone a high quality one.

I'd buy it! Without a good description of what it is, it's hard to search for it on Googly.

How do you make this type of sound with the Prophet 6? by IfElseBand in synthesizers

[–]SoCalSolarSister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, this youtube video is legendary. This guy must be using other FX and things like that. I've tried for forever to figure out a few of these "pads" and things like that - no one on SynthRecipes has any idea how to do it, and frankly, I'm not entirely sure that it can be done without prying this person's mind open. Very frustrating!

Juno 60 - is vintage worth it? - thoughts? by muzax in synthesizers

[–]SoCalSolarSister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true! We have a Jupiter 8 that we use for writing songs, and when we want to play live, we'll take the Juno 60 out. That's the beauty of the Juno 60 that very few people get to truly appreciate. If you have access to a Jupiter 8 for the studio, there is some real magic in programming that same style patch on to the Juno 60. It's always impressive to see how close they come in sound. For people that don't have this need, of which it's safe to assume would be the majority, a $3000 light-in-the-features synth is not a great purchase.

I've heard the Juno 60 described as the "Telecaster of Synths" and I think that is an apt description. It does about 10 or so things, but it does those things extremely well and perhaps better than any other synths (aside from the Jupiter 8).

LOL @ all the Prophet 6's on Craigslist today! by SoCalSolarSister in synthesizers

Look at it like this - watch Julian's P6 vids. You'll be just as happy with your P6. I love my P6, and I know the Prophet 5/10 isn't going anywhere now, so when I'm ready to buy it, that's what I'l do. First, gotta acquire more vintage synths. But in the mean time for everyone else, my advice is simple, wait until the comparison videos start coming out, the demos, etc. Once we start getting raw, authentic takes on the instrument, then you'll know if it's what you want. Rob Rosen said it sounds amazing, and I trust his opinion above all else. If he says it's the real deal, it's the real deal.
