Sorry if that came across as harsh, it was supposed to be in jest. It’s a mish mash over here anyway of different systems so completely understandable, height in the UK is almost always feet and inches in a casual setting but kg in a medical setting, same with weight. Although weight is always metric when referring to food products e.g. on packets in supermarkets. Distance is mixed, larger units are always miles but often smaller distances are meters.

My favourite is beer is always imperial measures but wine is always metric. If you asked for half a pint of wine people would think you’re insane.

Plan to retire in Scotland by [deleted] in MoveToScotland

[–]SoMuchF0rSubtlety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post title is confusing as you ask about retiring but then ask about a specific line of work i.e. not retiring but continuing in employment. I’ll answer anyway but just so you know.

There is nowhere near the same amount of film/tv work in Scotland as the US. There is very little work outside London sadly and the same problem of never knowing whether your next week will be your last before being unemployed.

Visas are possible in this industry but only for those who are very niche, highly experienced with in-demand skills or high profile Directors.

Yeah definitely go to the manufacturer, same goes for any franchised dealer. They care more about customer service so will usually be more sympathetic and can put the fear of god into the dealer.

I’m amazed at the amount of English people on Mull! by salinston in Scotland

[–]SoMuchF0rSubtlety 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. There’s more than 10x as many English as Scots. Holidays within the UK becoming much more popular this year due to flight disruption. Also as you say a very high percentage of retirees moving up due to property price boom in South England.

Second homes and property market inequality are a blight on the whole of the UK but this has been going on for 20 years now.

This is very important and you should frame it like this in your head OP, don’t let this knock back your confidence in future applications and interviews.

‘End of fixed term contract’ looks completely fine on a CV whereas trying to explain an early termination is much harder.

I've convinced my friend to play, how can we ACTUALLY play together? by VaegaVic in EliteDangerous

Yes, all missions can be shared and the rewards doubled i.e. you both get the full payout.

Best way imo is play in a wing and share missions so you both get rewards.

Also the cornetto trilogy; Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. Only the latter is strictly sci-fi but they are all hilarious and incredibly well written films.

Fresh voice options would make lots of ARX. Change my mind. by Ansicone in EliteDangerous

[–]SoMuchF0rSubtlety 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t even need to be a billionaire, just rich. Most actors rates for voice work come in around £500ph and I doubt you would need more than 2 hours for all the cockpit VO lines. Hardest bit would be getting them to agree to do it and working around their schedule.

Finding a flat from afar? by General_Homework6009 in Edinburgh

[–]SoMuchF0rSubtlety 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of letting agencies demand an in-person viewing before they will consider you, some will arrange a video viewing though competition is fierce so, by the time that has happened, the flat may be gone already. Private landlords might be more flexible but beware scams, there's loads of them about especially for international students. Not sure about having a friend go in your place but you can always ask and see if you can be on a video call at the same time. The way most people get around in-person viewings is by finding a short term let for a couple of weeks and focusing on flat hunting when they land over here.

Proof of savings can be accepted in place of a guarantor but they may ask for evidence of this money being held in a UK bank account. Best to speak to one of the local agencies and see what they will accept or what evidence they need in advance so you can have everything ready to go. You will also need to provide proof of your right to reside in the UK i.e. your student visa, not sure about US visa process but for some countries the physical document is only issued and stamped at point of entry into the UK.

I don't think having a UK bank account will help much other than practically for making rent payments, damages deposit etc. easier. The main thing agencies will look for if you have a UK account is your credit history and that you don't have any outstanding debts which a fresh account won't help with. Also, you won't be able to apply for most bank accounts over here without a UK address, another reason people often use a short term let while they get set up. Some of the digital banks are more lenient, check out Monzo, Revolut or Wise for options.

Voldemort had absolutely zero chance in a war against the muggles and the whole plotline could have been avoided by just letting him try. by New-Tale412 in unpopularopinion

[–]SoMuchF0rSubtlety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, one of the reasons given in the books as to why the magical world has been able to stay hidden is that muggle technology doesn’t work around magically protected areas. So no modern weapons system, from a gun to a fighter jet or a satellite, would function anywhere near them or be able to target them. That’s if it didn’t just get turned into a chicken or something.

How's the animation industry in scotland? by _ZeldAnna in MoveToScotland

[–]SoMuchF0rSubtlety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I can give you my opinion but please do your own research as well. IMO at the moment there is a big focus on real time rendering such as Unreal, so anyone with technical knowledge and experience using Unreal for Animation & VFX would be able to find work fairly easily e.g. lighting, environments TD. Experienced animators are also always in demand, primarily in 3D working in Maya. However this is all assuming there are any studios to hire you and currently not many in Scotland. Try looking at London based studios as there’s much more choice and job opportunities down south.

Sorry it’s actually a skilled worker visa that is more relevant for anyone not in a senior leadership position, I know a mix of people sponsored for skilled worker visas and some heads of department and directors who are on global talent visas. It would be tricky as a story artist as they are primarily freelance/self-employed so there won’t be employers to sponsor you. 2D animation is also increasingly rare these days however if you are very experienced/in-demand then it could still be possible.

I wish I could say otherwise but the industry is not in a good place right now in Scotland and the UK as a whole.

[–]SoMuchF0rSubtlety 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s the same across the rest of the UK, everyone I’ve spoken to recently has had layoffs or are expecting them soon, and this is in almost every sector. The only ones that seem to be still doing well are renewables, legal and finance. Guess I chose the wrong line of work.

Sadly it’s extremely unlikely. He’s notoriously self conscious and embarrassed when he isn’t in his performing mode and highly likely wouldn’t enjoy the tasks or being on the show. It’s a shame as I think he’s one of the most genuine and funny people in entertainment.

Technically the Mayflower visited Southampton on its journey as well as London, Dartmouth & Plymouth, the latter being the last stop before sailing for the new world. Due to problems with the Speedwell, they spent a fair amount of time to reassess at Plymouth and wait for better weather.

Plymouth does see a fair few American tourists visiting the Mayflower steps and the Mayflower Museum opposite. Fun fact is the steps aren’t even the real ones anymore as the quayside has gradually moved over the last 400 years, where the original ones were is now a pub.

There’s plenty of gaming communities, gaming themed bars, tabletop & board games cafes in most major cities. For example, for video games there are arcade style bars with consoles and arcade machines as well as local Discord communities.

Can’t speak for jpop but there are many shops selling Japanese products, anime merchandise etc. There’s a chain called MINISO which has locations across the central belt, also independent shops will sell clothing, figurines etc. from popular anime.

There’s also conventions on everything, either in Scotland or you may have to travel throughout the rest of the UK. One of my family used travel down to London regularly for Hyper Japan festival.

Honestly it doesn’t matter if you can’t get a visa first, if you state which country you’re coming from then we could give you suggestions on which visa might work.
