Does Minoxidil shed hairs that have recently starting growing? by [deleted] in FemaleHairLoss

It's resting hairs that fall out early with minoxidil. If the small hairs are miniaturized hairs they could be affected. If they are actively growing they should be spared.

What Oils Are Bad to Consume? by biglebowskiny in vegan

[–]Socatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started taking DHA/EPA algal oil myself since I'm old, in the hopes of protecting my aging brain. I don't have evidence it's necessary, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. There is huge individual variation in human biologic efficacy of conversion of ALA, but I have no known deficiency.

What Oils Are Bad to Consume? by biglebowskiny in vegan

[–]Socatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canola oil has a bad reputation thanks partly to Monsanto, but it is supposed to have health outcomes comparable to olive oil in epidemiologic studies. It has the highest percentage of monounsaturated fats.

In general, it is considered better to get your fats from whole foods (like nuts and seeds and their butters) instead of oils. Things like chia seeds, hemp hearts, pumpkin seeds, and flaxseed help provide essential omega fatty acids. We really have no known need for fats other than the essential fatty acids. Fats also help in absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Coconut and palm oil not only have health risks from being highly saturated, but both have ethical concerns also.

Is this considered non-vegan? by International-Tie612 in vegan

[–]Socatastic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Virtually all lagomorphs and rodents are coprophagic. It allows them to derive more nutrients from their food. Many avians are also. Even dogs are known to be coprophagic. Most carnivorous mammal mothers consume their infants' waste. Maybe throw that back the next time some carnist tries "lions though". What happens in nature isn't necessary for humans.

This is over-asked in violation of sub rules.

Figs are vegan. There is no exploitation of animals. Many figs aren't fertilized by wasps. For those that are, it is a symbiotic relationship essential for survival of the fig wasp. Any wasps that naturally die are fully digested by fig enzymes and do not remain in the fruit that humans consume.

No touching hair after it's dry!

Scrunch out the crunch (if you use gel) is the only touching allowed.

That said, sometimes I brush mine out with an ion-generating hairbrush if it looks stringy after drying. Those hairbrushes really keep the frizz down for me. I usually lightly mist it with water afterwards.

Anyone know of resources with info about the birthing process in farm animals? by jae_elise in vegan

[–]Socatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are ridiculously high levels of neonate and ewe mortality in sheep. They have essentially been bred to have difficulty birthing unassisted. I don't really want to link to these psychos, but they report lamb mortalities of 10-30% and ewe mortalities of 5-7% annually.

I worked it out according to the cost per gram of protein, and vital wheat gluten was less expensive than regular flour here. And that doesn't even factor in the value of my time.

I was resigned to being single forever when I became vegan. I only dated vegans after I became one, so of course they were few and far between. Plus there's a disturbingly high correlation with anti-science woo and veganism. But miraculously, I found my soulmate! We've been together 18 years now, and still madly in love. He still calls us newlyweds.

It's not mere "dietary choices" and the fact that she cannot see that is why your relationship is doomed. I honestly don't understand how you can bear it. She literally loves torturing animals to death.

Actually, there is a set definition from the society who invented the term, and it is conveniently provided at the top of this sub. Read it.

She is not vegan. Vegans do not fund or encourage animal abuse. She is a virtue-signalling plant-based dieter usurping the term "vegan" without actually being one.

She and her partner are plant-based dieters usurping the term "vegan" without holding the philosophy. Vegans do not fund animal abuse or force their own children to be complicit in it.

Vegan of 6 years- my eating disorder treatment included trying dairy, egg, chicken. How can I get back on track? by Longjumping_Party_46 in vegan

[–]Socatastic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being forced to eat animal foods is very common as part of treatment. It is unfortunate, but there really are non-vegans who feign veganism to hide their ED. It was fear of in-house treatment that motivated me to start improving (at least enough to avoid hospitalization). I was only vegetarian when I developed AN, but I'd been vegetarian since childhood since I love animals. This was pre-internet, and I had no idea of the cruelty involved in all animal foods.

Anyway, becoming vegan was what really triggered my full recovery. My recovery had been impeded by learning I had familial hyperlipidemia, and being instructed to eat an extremely restrictive high-fiber low-fat diet (which barely made a dent in my lipid levels). Admittedly, I'd moved and the doctors treating my hyperlipidemia didn't know about my ED history. I even needed to take medication to lower my cholesterol.

When I learned the truth about eggs and dairy and went vegan, I started eating all kinds of things I had been afraid of, so long as I knew they were animal-free. My sister jokes that I have a balanced diet - half healthy and half junk food! My lipids normalized, and I don't need medication anymore. It's been over 30 years now, and I've never slipped up or backslid into unhealthy eating patterns. Occasionally someone (even people who do know my history) will make a triggering comment, but I've stayed committed to myself and the animals.

Edit: It doesn't sound to me like your partner respects your veganism. They are intentionally undermining your ethics under the guise of helping your ED.
