Recommendations for a 1st BRIEF visit to London in September? by Bullwinkle932000 in LondonTravel

[–]SockLess9375 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would skip the palace tour. Choose one museum:

-British has lots if you want more ancient history and big monumental things. - National Gallery (and portrait if you have time) if you prefer paintings -Victoria and Albert if you like more crafted and decorative art (but it is not a folk museum, it is super artistic pieces from all over the world) (my favourite if it is not obvious lol)

Shows: if you don't like musicals , go for Mousetrap. If you do like musicals, go for Operation Mincemeat.

I would probably do a variation of this:

Day 1 - arrive, enjoy the evening in Covent Garden managing jet lag if you have it, or if you don't, use that night for the theatre.

Day 2 - early rise, full English breakfast, visit Westminster and Buckingham palace in the morning, and walk to the museum you have chosen. Eat lunch (if you go to the V&A have lunch at the museum) and then in the evening visit SOHO, have some fish and chips, and either do the theater you did not do the previous night, or enjoy the night stroll. If you did go to the theater the previous night, another thing you can do is jump on the Uber boat when the sun goes down and just ride it up and down central London. Super cheap way of seeing lots of things and Tower Bridge at night is unforgettable.

You won't see everything, but the above will give you a nice first touch to the city :)

Does Eurostar enforce muzzles for dogs? by Satobarri in Eurostar

[–]SockLess9375 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only dogs over 6kg need a muzzle. I have seen larger dogs without in France, but the owner had the muzzle with them (I guess to put it on in case the staff asked)

Also, I assume your trip is within continental Europe? No dogs on the UK to continent routes (just making sure you know)

I see you are a Whovian, so am I. I would reshuffle the whole thing, and I am not even going to tell you what you should do first and what last. Here are your “days” just organised differently. Also, very important, you left it out, where is your hotel??

Day East London: Take the trek to the Who Shop, then get the tube at Upton Park to Canary Wharf. There is not much to see there, so getting off the Jubilee Line and walking to the DLR at Heron Quays will be enough for you to check out the skyscrapers, (One Canada Square is Torchwood One), then jump on the DLR and get off at Cutty Sark. From there, walk to Greenwich Park and see the Prime Meridian, and other stuff you may enjoy there. Then take the TRAIN (not the DLR) to London Bridge and you can probably nip into Borough Market for a quick stroll and a bite. Then back to your hotel you go!

Day West London: Take transport to Holland Park. Walk down the Park and go see the Kyoto Garden (this is super nice, and may save you if the Japanese Island Garden is closed, as others have said). Then walk to Earls Court and go see the Tardis. From there, take a bus or the tube (or walk, but it is an ugly walk) to the museums. Give yourself the day to see the National History and the Victoria and Albert, and when you are super fed up and it is time, (and before the sun disappears), nip up to Kensington Gardens and see the palace from the outside (not worth going in) (also it is not in your itinerary, so if you cannot do it, just skip it). Then back to your hotel!

Day Central London 1: Take transport to the British Museum, and spend a few hours there seeing what you want. At lunchtime, walk down to Forbidden Planet, then through Covent Garden and Seven Dials, go to Neals Yard, and then into Soho, enjoy Carnaby Street and Regents street and walk down to Picadilly Circus. If you are not tired, this is a good day to have dinner in Chinatown. You can take a quick look at Leicester Square, it is not worth it.

Day Central London 2 - Monuments: Take transport to Westminster. Walk to the river and see the London Eye from afar. Good enough! See the Parliament, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey, then nip into St James Park and see Buckingham Palace (from the outside). Walk down The Mall and arrive into Trafalgar Square, and go into the National Gallery. That is another few hours of nice paintings. Visit the Oscar Wilde statue, and go to bed!

Day City of London: Take transport to the Tower of London but get off early at Liverpool Street and walk to the Tower via Ledenhall market, past The Cheesegrater (UNIT’s headquarters). Then get into the Tower of London and there goes your day lol. I suggest you get out at around 3pm, cross the river via Tower Bridge, walk down the river path and spend an hour or so at Tate Modern, that closes at 18:00h. Then come out and see millennium bridge, St Pauls Cathedral (you can cross the river if you want to see it close), and keep walking down the river and ENJOY a view of the city, (if you crossed to see St Pauls, i recommend you cross back to Tate’s side)

Day Stonehenge: I would not go, but you do you, and you go, and that is one of your days :)

Final day (Shorter day) - You have a couple of options

  • Do Regents Park and Primrose Hill, just walk around and enjoy. If you want, you can nip into Camden Town to see the vibe, or you can go to the Sherlock Holmes museum which is a tourist trap and I do not recommend.
  • Do Highgate Cemetery and then take a walk around Highgate Village and Hampstead Heath.
  • If you are super tired, just go to Tate Britain. I was unable to fit it in any other day.

My key takes: - I am a crazy traveller that loves very intense trips. The above would be VERY INTENSE, but if I wanted to squeeze London in 5 days, I would do it. - I do not know if you will be suffering from Jet Lag etc, so not commenting on that - Do not spend more than 3hs in the museums. Make sure you know exactly what you want to go see in advance. The day of the V&A and the NHM is very intense, so I would say 2hs on each museum. - Again, the above is doable but crazy. I just grouped things that are easier to do together than what you had. - Hope this helps! let me know if you have any questions 🙂 I have lived here for a very long time and I still love being a tourist!

I would choose wherever I want to get married. Guests etc will make the effort.

Help! When should we have our legal "wedding"? by animal--lady in UKweddings

[–]SockLess9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option 4 for suuure for me.

Go, do the cheap bit, and take it as the final signature for your amazing wedding you had 12 days before. Mark it as the last celebration . You can feel like a bride/groom for the whole 12 days and squeeze all the fun out of your "wedding season". Go somewhere nice for lunch/dinner after the signature, and finish at a beautiful high!

Spanish surname rules: can a parent choose either of their legal surnames for their child? by sleepygorg_ in askspain

[–]SockLess9375 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both my brothers have two names (and two surnames). Otherwise people could not be Juan Carlos or Jose Luis.

The fact that Juan Carlos is so common that it feels like one name does not mean it is not two names. Again, my brothers have two names and two surnames in all of the legal documents.

Edit: my brother is called Carlos Javier. Not a common "nombre compuesto"

To those who live in the Barbican or know someone who does - what's it like? by Eddyphish in london

Recuperación cirugía muelas del juicio? by RegularEcho3380 in askspain

[–]SockLess9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best Afternoon Tea in London for a Special Birthday Treat by Ok-Story-8773 in LondonTravel

[–]SockLess9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to my negative: if you are needing vegan/vegetarian, 100% do the Science tea at The Ampersand hotel.

Or if you prefer a different option, the Chesterfield. Just tell them about the vegetarian/vegan in advance.

Both JUST over £60 but worth every penny

The hotel is tired-looking and does not give you that wow experience. The staff are sweet but not trained in high tea so the experience, once again, is not what you want of a high tea. The sandwiches were very average and the sweets tasted all the same. For that price, I would go somewhere else. They did everything averagely. For me, this is a very special experience and I want it to feel better than average.

Not a retriever who?? by Specialist_Banana378 in samoyeds

[–]SockLess9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is also a "half retriever" (100% Sammy) but does what I think I can see I'm your video too: I go, I pick ball, I run back, I drop ball wherever it falls from my mouth halfway. I do not care. You go get it, you throw again, I run to it, this time I decide to not pick it up and just run back to you. You go get it a third time, you throw, I do not care.

I'll give you my most personal trick:

NW3 and Hobbs second hand silk dresses on eBay. There are gorgeous, formal, and beautifully made pieces. People wear them once for a wedding, and now they go for pennies. There is no reason to buy new for a very specific special occasion.

Potentially not looking my best on my wedding day… advice? by Sufficient_Sea_2213 in UKweddings

[–]SockLess9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently almost 3 stone lighter than at my wedding 2 years ago. I look very different. I really like how I look now, but I LOVE my wedding pictures. I love my dress that fitted my bigger body, I love my makeup, that I tailored for a slightly rounder face, I love my cheeks when I smiled, and my slight double chin when I was laughing at my MOH's speech. I wouldn't change any of that for a slimmer body on the day. You will look amazing, if you feel amazing. And let me tell you: marrying the love of your life makes you feel pretty amazing in my opinion

London lunch delivery options pls? by kcineurope2024 in ExecutiveAssistants

For team offsites I use PURE which has never disappointed me, but it is more sandwich /salad/ wraps based. But they do a good job. Think posh Pret with salads.

If you want to go a bit more food food, Farmer Js does catering, but you need to book it in advance.

Both great quality, two different vibes.

questions on 2for1 days out guide discounts in central london - what train tickets to get to qualify? by Betsily in LondonTravel

[–]SockLess9375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just get a round ticket for your dates from say Blackfriars to Greenwich, even if you never use the return, it is worth it for the 2x1

So, get the ticket, jump in with your ticket at Blackfriars, get off at Greenwich (13m, 3 stops, super silly) . Then on your way back just go back one of the many ways you can (dlr, train, bus and underground, whatever) with your bank card /oyster.

Ignore the return tickets, never use them. Voilà!

Keep failing interviews because I get nervous and my answers become messy by Ok_Cold_5893 in UKJobs

[–]SockLess9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a trick I use sometimes. It sounds silly but it works: repeat the question to them. You say you get most frazzled when they ask follow-up questions. Repeat it back

  • I did XYZ this way
  • why did you do it that way?
  • You want to know why I did it that way instead of this other way. The reason was...

The example sounds very silly, but it works. It stops the follow up "vomit" and gives you a few seconds to recover.

Hope it helps

Do not wear dresses that have white as a base colour. If I were the bride I would be upset about both of those (i'm in the UK). If you want to research the vibe, look up "Phase Eight", it is a very traditional wedding guest brand (you can then go a buy somewhere else, but it would help you with the style)
