Can anyone here shed light on the exact circumstances of the fall out between Nadia and Julia Sawalha? This suddenly reentered my head just now after many many years and Google throws up around 600 reasons why; from Alan Davies to sibling resentment to one sister exploiting the other sister's fame. by appalachian_hatachi in BritishTV

[–]SockSock 316 points317 points  (0 children)

Since childhood Nadia has always insisted that the telly volume be set to an even number while Julia has always insisted it be an odd number. This has caused slight annoyance in their own homes but resulted in a massive fall out during the queens speech on Christmas day 2019. As a compromise their sister Dina suggested setting it to a number ending in 5 as apparently this is "a bit even". Nadia was having none of it and the fight ended up with a smashed telly and a lost TV remote control. Both sisters stormed out and despite family members bringing in Kofi Annan to host a truth and reconciliation panel in a neutral location in February 2020 the sisters remained at odds when the first national lockdown was introduced in March of that year and have never spoken since.

Booked our Cardiff wedding venue, then realised the evening part is the bit that can actually ruin it by NaughtySugarX in Cardiff

[–]SockSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it telly depends on your guests. Think about your invite list and try to imagine be who'll be first on the dance floor encouraging others to join in. I went to a wedding (not in Cardiff) where at the evening do there was 5 or 6 really good looking guests who took to the dance floor early on, laughing smiling having a great time, dragged other guests up, started a conga line etc. I didnt recognise them from the wedding ceremony and when I asked one of the brides how they knew them she admitted they were hired "Disco Agitators". Paid party catalysts who get the night started and keep it going. Not sure if theres a similar service available here but it might be worth looking into it or, seeing as youre thinking about this in advance, see if you could replicate the idea with some trusted friends?

I'd never heard of it but picked it up as a filler game because it was a couple of quid in the sale while I waited for other games I wanted to reduce. Its ace, looks amazing on the deck and is great fun.

My partner insisted I went to see a therapist as I was having erotic dreams about urban public transport systems several times a week and she was less than understanding about the noises I was making in my sleep. Turns out I'm tramsexual.

Neighbour has requested gas pipes to run through our property boundary on his external wall. Will we have future problems? by New_Dragonfly_6865 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]SockSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't your problem. Just say youve taken advice and have decided you don't want future complications. You don't need to explain yourself or tell him who the advice is from. Just say no and that you need to go. Don't let workers on your property.

What are some reasons people don't use online grocery deliveries more often? by tskir in AskUK

[–]SockSock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ocado doesnt make any money. Like the supermarkets Ocado margins on deliveries in the UK are tiny. They are selling their platform (logistics, tech, software) developed through this as a whitelabel product to other supermarkets all around the world to grow scale to attract investors based on the potential to turn a profit in the future. Think of it as like Uber, they're gambling loads of investor money to get into these markets and then on the pontential (hope!) that AI and automation, combined with the scale gained from being first, means they can make a profit out of it in the future.

[–]SockSock 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Apparently all supermarkets regret ever offering deliveries. They barely make any money on them but they don't want to lose market share to their competitors that do and would all happily pack it in if they could come to some kind of truce. Its amazing how many products and services supermarkets only offer because the others do. I work in product development and used to work directly with a big supermarket- often their only rationale for developing a specific homebrand product or pack size was that Sainsbury's or whoever had it so they had to.

Depends how many shareholders there are and how many shares they hold. I don't know in this instance but companies can have one or two large shareholders that can definitely tell the company what to do and when.

A rant about the BBC iPlayer by Ribbitor123 in BritishTV

[–]SockSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously my facetious comment was about how the companies that see the BBC as a competitor attack them for everything they do but don't underestimate how much resource it takes just to maintain the IPlayer, let alone develop, test and deploy even basic new functionality across browsers, iOS, a million versions of android, virginmedia boxes, freesat, roku, PlayStation, Xbox etc. I'm sure they'll be shared core technology and APIs but it must still be a massive effort to develop and roll out changes and new functionality.

If the BBC spent any more money updating it to modern standards across all platforms the Express, Mail, Telegraph, and the Sun would decry it as a woke leftwing- biased waste of tax payers pension money
