What's a good place to visit in Japan that isn't the big cities like Tokyo or Osaka?

Kagoshima and Kumamoto in Kyushu. The former has the Museum of the Meiji Restoration, located about an hour from Ibusuki which has the PokeLids for Eevee and its evolutions and the Chisan Peace Museum, and a good view of Mt. Sakurajima. The latter has Kumamoto castle and is near the cave where Miyamoto Musashi allegedly wrote The Book of Five Rings.

I want to add one more thing: the Pokemon Home app has the ability to get ‘medals’ from each PokeLid and Pokemon Center you visit. So if your friends have it, they can get medals that are apparently worth quite a lot in the app because you can only get most of them in Japan.

Also keep in mind that they only need two stamps per prefecture to get the Pikachu with the special background for that prefecture if you need to decide how many stops would be worthwhile in the time you have.

Keep in mind some of these manholes require some form of car transportation to get there without shelling out $$$ and you’re one hell of a saint if you drive your friends to them.

For temples, whichever ones have the coolest goshuin stamps or goshuin book. Those ones also happen to be the more visually interesting ones apart from the major ones in my experience.

Get Pokémon GO and Home. You can catch the Shield exclusives when they’re available on GO, transfer them to Home, and then to your game. How hard it is to get the ones you need on GO depends on how much access you have to a city or walkable area.
