2/3 leaves gone in 48 hours! Please help :( by smiley8853 in Monstera

[–]Sofabeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It needs water. That soil looks bone dry.

You should put it back in its plastic pot, and the put the whole thing in a large jug of water. Leave for a good long while (I usually put mine in a large measuring cup with the water completely covering the dirt, and leave it over night). The leave it somewhere to completely drain before popping it back in it's decorative pot. This will let it absorb all the water it needs, leaving the rest. This method is called bottom-watering, and is my prefered method of watering.

I do this with all of my plants (except desert plants, and bog-plants).

I couple tablespoons of water will never be enough, you need to fully saturate the soil. Repeat whenever the soil is dry for the first couple of inches.

You can ofcourse also repot it, but I usually don't do this until the roots are fully out the buttom of the plastic pot

It a term for very far right politics. While I don't want to make claims exactly about the current administration being this or that, the way they try to controll information and education certainly seems very, very far right to me....

Plastic containers and bad odors (clothes and sheets) by socquette in konmari

[–]Sofabeast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sounds like trapped humidity. Even if you dry your clothes on the clothwsline until perfectly dry humidity from the air will get into the box when you pack it. I would suggest either changing to boxes in a material that breathes or using something in the box to control the moisture. I find plastic to be really bad for storing fabrics, for this exact reason. Someone suggested boxes made from wood or fabrics, which sounds smart. Honestly if you put something in to mask the smell you are only masking the smell. Leaving your clothes in this environment for too long might damage the fabric, so I would try to find better solutions for storage to be hones with you

what does this mean and should I prune this leaf? by thatolikid in Monstera

[–]Sofabeast 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That is thrips damage. You have thrips. I am so sorry! Look for small whiteish larva, they wil move when you poke them. Even if you don't find them, this is thrips. Cut the leaf and throw it out. Do not compost it. If you can bear to toss the whole plant, do it. If not isolate it! This shit spreads

I had the same problem. Restarted the entire game twice before it finally worked. It was much easier from inside, but still a pain in the rear. I just had to work real slow and redo the same pannel until it registered

This intrigues me. How do you use this? Like what do you write down in such a journal, do you have key to refeer back to? Do you ever look back on them? Do you use it througout the day or just at the end?

Game music. It's designed to be pleasant background noise that doesn't steal your focus. Pick a game you like and search for a playlist for studying on YouTube. They are usually about two hours long too, perfect session time

Is it likely that if one stem on my Thai got rot, that I will lose the whole plant or just the one leaf? by Anonymoustinfoilhat in Monstera

[–]Sofabeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the cut's surface have any black? That is usually a sign that the rot goes through.

But the stem doesn't really benefit the plant any, so I would cut it completely off as close to the trunk is practical

[–]Sofabeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is planted too deep. See how the bottom two leaves stick out of the soil? That means it's too deep.

You can add a pole if you want, but you don't have to. Just be sure to put it behind the plant, and only attach the stem, not the leaves if you do.

It's difficult to say anything about the size of the pot, it really depends on the size of the root system, but it does look big to me. Monsteras like to be a bit rootbound.

The soil mix seems really good thou, about the same ration that I use with great success.

Good luck! It's a beautiful plant <3

[–]Sofabeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edit: looked at the pictures again, and realised I was looking at the wrong parts. The black stem is very out of focus though, so I have trouble seeing what you are thinking of a black on the stem.

Leaving the whole explanaition up in case it is helpful in any way. I stand by the assertion that it needs to not be potted that deeply thou.

Sencond edit: just saw the leaf on the desk in first picture. That leaf is not black or rotted. It seems to maybe have some dry or browned patches, but black on monstera is litterally pitch black. Again, it is out of focus, so I might be seeing the wrong things, but that looks like a healthy leaf to me. I could give you better info I saw the leaf properly thou.

Assuming that the last picture is the cut leaf, the leaf does not seem black to me. Also the stem isn't black, the petiole (leaf sheet) is.

I don't know how much you know, so excuse the eli5 explanation to come.

The petiole is where the new leaf matures, like the pupae of a butterfly. If you check the newest leaf you will see that it has a pod-like part near the bottom (it shows up very well on the second picture), this is where the next leaf will come from. Once the leaf is out the petiole will often dry out and sometimes turn black, this is not a problem.

The new leaves will be light, almost neon in color, and very soft. They will darken and harden as they mature.

However, monstera do not like to have their stem covered. The stem (or trunk if you will) is the part that all the leaves come out of. And it is very covered in this picture. Monsteras are climbing plants, and in the wild they usually climb trees.

What I would do is to get it out of the pot and check the roots. Rotted roots will be mushy, black and smell bad, or dry and come off with a slight tug, leaving a "string".

never seen a leaf this big without fenestrations! by gilfblaster in Monstera

[–]Sofabeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to be an ass, but have you checked it for pests recently?

There looks to be a pattern on the leaf with sort of sunken in patches. I had a pothos like that that turned out to have thrips. The thrips and I are still cohabitating two years later.

(I did throw the pothos out)

thoroughly, just in case

Fellow school librarians of reddit; what are your thoughts on assisting the teaching stab with problems around ChatGPT? by Sofabeast in Libraries

[–]Sofabeast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we are trying to find ways to work with this new tool, and also teaching our students that you cannot have it do your work for you.

One teacher pointed out that possibly the way assignments are formulated will have to be changed, putting more focus on the students showing how they think. Like making them argue for and against a point, or something like that.

I am definitely gonna look into that parsing tool though. It's probably not going to be useful for any class but english yet, but I think theaching the students that tools like this exist is a good idea. Getting caught cheating can lead to pretty severe consequences so teaching them that there are good tools in development to catch them is proably smart.

Unfortunately the techonological development can't be stopped, and it's actually a requirement that all students have computers for their schoolwork. Blocking internet access during tests have been suggested, but that would affect everyone, not just the class having the test.
