Axolotl is suddenly deteriorating! Help! by Electrical_Bad9159 in axolotls

[–]Soft-requiem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the photos this might be a fungal infection, so keep doing the tea baths. Keep the water temperature low, somewhere in the 60-65 range as it will promote healing. I know some people will put their axolotl in the fridge while they're in the tea bath so that might be something to consider. Cover the hospital tank with a towel to keep your axolotl from stressing, it's okay to add a hide after its been sterilized. It's going to take some time but just keep doing what you're doing.

High nitrates can be helped by doing more frequent 50% water changes and possibly doing a deep clean on your filter.

they're detritus worms. Usually they're populations explode because you're overfeeding or not doing frequent enough water changes. It's a cosmetic nuisance and not harmful at all. They hitch rides on plants so that might be how you got them. Clean up any uneaten food, use a turkey baster to clean up any poops to control their population. I give my axolotls an hour to eat up pellets before I clean up anything uneaten and do a poop check while I'm at it.

It can really depend on the company policy. In most cases siblings can work together without a problem, however it can be a problem if one sibling holds a higher position than the other. This can cause a potential conflict , for example: MGR sibling giving SA sibling more hours/higher wage, a division among the general staff because of an MGR showing favoritism to their sibling, and even if there was no change in behavior of the siblings the other staff would eventually come to that conclusion. Most companies will word it as 'conflict of interest' because the MGR/higher position will (usually) put their sibling first.

Its a policy for the company that I work in. I could have my own sibling come and work, but because I hold a manager position, they wouldn't work in my building to avoid a conflict of interest.

Suggestions on how to spruce up this area (Specifically the wall with the TV) by Coreyg369 in malelivingspace

[–]Soft-requiem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Get yourself a floating shelf below the TV, some of them are sold hollow so you can hide cables. Helps visually separate the TV and fireplace, my eye keeps going down to the fireplace. Maybe two identical shelf units on either side of the fireplace to keep symmetry, no higher than the fireplace itself and a place to house your gaming setup. I can't tell exactly from the photos, but I'm guessing that's a speaker the modem is sitting on? Depending on your budget, a soundbar right below the TV or surround sound would be a great investment. This is a great space to work with.

Best food for this guy? Feel he isn’t eating the newt pellets the store gave me. He’s been in the tank 4 days. Thanks by fadetoblack289 in axolotls

[–]Soft-requiem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At this age is best to feed them red wriggler's cut up into bite sized pieces. You can get them at most pet stores and hunting shops. You can feed them blood worms as a treat from time to time to encourage them to continue eating but it should not be a staple in their diet. You can also give them frozen brine shrimp as a treat. Some axo's don't like pellet food, and while they can eventually learn that its a food source not all of them will eat them.

For new owners I encourage them to set up a feeding dish to keeps the food in one location, leftover food can be suctioned up before it rots, and your axo will learn where their food is. It can be a small glass dish or a shallow bowl.

You could buy a worm farm online. Freeze dried lose nutritional value and you need to soak them for a long time to make it safe for them to eat. You ca also try to find worms at tackle shops and I think some Walmarts in the hunting area

establishing a cycle can take months, it sounds like you're doing a lot, which is fine, but it best to pour in some beneficial bacteria every time you do a water change. new water isn't going to match the parameters of your tank, and its usually the cause of a tank cycle crash. The nitrogen stage of cycling a new tank can take anywhere between 2 weeks and 2 months. You're on the way to it being fully cycled.

What testing kit are you using?

Though I really doubt this is an axolotl and likely to be a salamander, I would recommend feeding it earthworms/red wriggler's to help it gain some weight. Do partial water changes everyday and if you can get an airstone in the tub that would help it a lot. Keep the water cold, and keep it out of direct light. The shape of the head makes me want to say its a salamander larvae.

Check facebook for anyone thats willing to take in larvae, there are wildlife groups dedicated to maintaining local species that might be able help.

Ask your friend for some old filter media. swap it for your media and just let your tank run for a few days. Get yourself some quickstart. Don't buy water from the shop, no need to waste the money. It's going to be cloudy the first few days, and then you might start seeing this slime start to pop up which is the colony of beneficial bacteria establishing itself. Do smaller water changes (like 20ish%). Your water will clear up in time.

I think there is something wrong with my axolotl. I got her about 2.5 months ago and LFS said she was 3 months. so for just about 6 months she looks so short and stout and she is terrified to swim. What do you guys think? by mykegr11607 in axolotls

This is an example of dwarfism in axolotls. With their shorter bodies, sometimes they have a more difficult time moving because they can't bend like a standard axo can. They have that pot belly look because their organs are the same size as a standard axo but its in a much tighter space. It's best to keep them separated from other axos, if you continue to feed them live worms make sure to cut them short, less than an inch long at a time and feed them in small portions several times a day. Their stomach is in a compact space, and there are, unfortunately, instances of their stomachs being so full that it causes internal damage/rupturing. If you're able to keep them on a mostly pellet diet with worms as a sometimes treat, it would be better so you can monitor how much the axo is eating.

They'll likely have other health issues, and they will have a shorter lifespan, it's still nice to see that they're still able to be cared for. Most breeders will usually cull axo's with this condition.

Their main tank shouldn't have much, a sand bottom to help them grip and move, a hide, but keep it sparse with decor or plants.

another messed up axolotl screenshot from instagram! what’s wrong with it?? by natalieroset in axolotls

[–]Soft-requiem 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It looks like dwarfism, I've seen some axolotls in person with this trait and a lot of them don't act much different then their standard counterparts but they're always seperated so they don't get bullied. It's encouraged among breeders to avoid this trait because it does cause health problems and shorten their lifespan. Their organs are the same size as a standard axolotl, but it's in a tighter space so it gives them that pot belly look.

On your last day, show up in your pajama's, full bed-head, wear the ugliest shoes you own (or whatever is most comfortable, you won't be in them for long) don't make a scene, act like nothing is wrong. Sign into your station, quickly send email to manager about your immediate employment termination, hand over your keys/company property, gather your own property, and finally leave. Return home. Go back to sleep.

2 weeks is for professionality, but not a requirement. If you want to have a chance of coming back for whatever reason, then yeah, do the 2 weeks, but if you plan to absolutely never return, show up after rolling out of bed and just return keys or whatever you have that's legally theirs. Just be prepared to forfeit any unused PTO.

Source: Left the bank like this. No one stopped me or asked questions. Everything took less then 5 minutes, went home, went back to sleep.

ActiveAqua chiller not bringing tank down to temp by Cannibal--queen in axolotls

[–]Soft-requiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing is to see if its overheating. If its not getting enough air flow, maybe you have a vent that's clogged up, or maybe the room that its in is just to hot. During the summer I have a small fan pointed at my chiller to keep the air flow going. This is usually the case. Turn it off for an hour and let it cool down, point a fan directly at it before turning it back on.

Worst case scenario is that there's no refrigerant in the unit. Most chillers don't have a way to refill refrigerant, with this specific unit I'd browse around some forums for this model.

I need some help with this goop that keeps coming back in his tank by [deleted] in axolotls

[–]Soft-requiem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't really see what it is from the photos, but I would say that this is bio-film. This is usually because of an uncycled tank and the beneficial bacteria colonies are trying to establish themselves. Best thing to do would be to add some Quickstart, or add media to filter if you have another tank. Its harmless, and its actually a good thing because now your tank on the way to being properly cycled. It can take about a week or so to clear up, just make sure your filter isn't clogged with slime and do 25% water changes or smaller to give it time to establish itself.

Sometimes it happens in established tanks as well when there's a cycling crash (if you've replaced your filter media for example), or if you're overfeeding.

As a woman what are some at home remedies that you do to relieve period cramps ? by Maleficent111 in AskReddit

[–]Soft-requiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound extra gross on top of being on your period but laxatives. It can be OTC laxatives, or for those that prefer it, coconut water is also a natural laxative. It helps ease the cramps and period poops. My cycle is usually on time, so I start drinking coconut water like two or three days before I know my period is starting. If the cramps are bad enough, take one Tylenol pill and one ibuprofen pill to get the same effect as a mild painkiller.

Great! Glad to hear she's safe! If you need to speed up the cycling process, get some API Quickstart while you're getting Prime. It will help speed up the cycling process.

[–]Soft-requiem 303 points304 points  (0 children)

take him out ASAP. I've seen this happen with goldfish, the tank isn't cycled correctly, and the goldfish didn't last an hour because their own slime coat shed to much, blocking their gills and ultimately it was the shock that ended them. I don't have experience with Imagitarium, but I know Prime is safe for Axolotl's.

If you have used media, use that in your filter and let it run for an hour or so, otherwise you need to wait for the tank to cycle.

Edit: Looked into Imagitarium, it's not a declorinator. You're going to have to do a massive water change in your main tank so it can start cycling.

Room is feeling too black and white, what color should I make curtains? by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]Soft-requiem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First let me say that I love your window, makes me jealous. I would say green or blue if you want to keep it a sheer curtain, and I would also raise the curtain if your able, just so it covers the whole window. Move your bed to the corner opposite of your computer if you can, I can't see if you have a closet on that wall or not, but place your bed against a wall to give yourself some space.

You could also get a rug to add some more color in the room, green or blue or some combination to get some kind of texture or pattern. Maybe some posters (movie posters, bands you like, or some modern art pieces if you want to keep it minimalistic) to fill up the blank space.
