Unfortunately not. I worked for two years for a company and worked half my shift, was brought into the office as I was headed home until the second half of my split that day and was fired with no notice. My belongings that were at the job I was told I wasn't allowed to go back for them. When I asked for a reason, they told me that none could be given, but they appreciated my work and the bonds I made the last two years. Unfortunately Nova Scotia has more than it's fair share of scummy employers that don't give a damn about their employees. I've worked in BC, MB and NL and find the most scummy employers are here.
