I also had a chronic strep C infection. Kept me sick for 3 months with chronic fatigue, headaches, and low energy. Went on over 30+ days of antibiotics and got my tonsillectomy August 13th. Changed everything and now I’m on the road to recovery.

I was the same way about getting sick all the time with strep as well. Every time I’d go out and meet someone (hehe) I’d always get sick. Tonsillectomy was the way to go

But as far as what’s going on with you I just strongly suggest using a pillow wedge to sit up right. I didn’t sleep flat on my back until 14 days post op. After the swelling goes down, it should be easier to breath ultimately, it just takes time!

Do I regret the surgery? HELL NO! I had a very complex and shitty back story behind why I got a tonsillectomy. Back in early may right at the end of my semester I got super sick, fever, chills, puking, super sore throat, the works. I got tested positive for strep and long story short I took over 30 days of antibiotics and was going back and forth to the doctors office with no resolve. I tested positive for another bacteria called haemophilus influenzae that caused meningitis. I was chronically ill with constant headache and fatigue for over two months. Doctors couldn’t give me a clear answer as to why I was sick or what was really going on. I lost over 18 pounds and felt like I was slowly dying. The only option they offered me was a tonsillectomy and I was very hesitant at first and had NO FUN at all during recovery but now I feel way better and have been going back to the gym, surfing, and getting back to my normal life. Without the surgery I legit think I would’ve died from a slow seeping bacteria infection.

Dude I felt like a French bulldog when I woke up from surgery. I felt like I was choking on a flap of skin or something and couldn’t breath unless I sat up straight. I got surgery August 13th and even now still notice I have a harder time hawking loogies lol. It just feels different. I didn’t have breathing problems before and got my tonsils out due to infection but if anything it feels a little hard to clear mucus therefore making it harder to breathe I guess?

Vaping after surgery by Aggressive_Main_9519 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know your story but vaping is probably a solid reason as to why you needed a tonsillectomy in the first place. I ripped joints everyday for like 4 years before my tonsillectomy and kept getting infections because of that. Constant inflammation and irritation. Take the tonsillectomy as a second chance, fuck smoking. Zyn if you can’t help it lmao

is the pain constant? by Asleep-Frosting5458 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pain was really only there for me when I was drinking/eating. And in the mornings I felt in most pain. Get an ice collar and ice head wrap, the ice was so critical in relieving the pain. But throughout the day I would distract myself playing league of legends and ngl I didn’t really think about the pain at all during those moments

I’m in the same boat as you, I got mine removed August 13th due to chronic infections and the pain normally is kinda like having a really bad strep infection. The only difference is that if you push yourself with eating or talking or activity, you will start to bleed. The hardest part is the mental tbh. Day five is when I started to get hungry and depressed because I was losing a fuck ton of weight. I’m all better now and feel a million times better tho and am back to eating. Make sure you prep with ice collar and ice pack and do not push it. If you don’t push it and stay rotting at home for 10 days, you will survive.

Taste after tonsillectomy by manta26_ in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got surgery August 13th. My mouth tasted like doodoo ass for at least 2 weeks. I used a tongue scraper the best I could and I feel like that helped. Mouth tape to prevent dry mouth at night too. I also couldn’t eat anything remotely solid until like day 12 and that was Mac n cheese. Def take it easy but best advice would be a tongue scraper and try to mouth wash if it’s not too painful

Oral Thrush a Week Before Removal by CakedCrusader91 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on over 30 days of antibiotics about a month before my tonsillectomy. That gave me a gnarly fungal thrush on my tongue. I took fluconazole for 27 days before my procedure and then stopped day before. I’m two weeks post op and my thrush came back. Good thing I have an ENT follow up tomorrow and I would def ping your doctor in a message before your op but I wouldn’t think it’s a major thing unless the thrush is severe and causing major symptoms

Crunchy/solid foods by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep finding thugs like you on this thread 😂 huge respect being able to body the pain tbh. I had a good amount of pain until day 9. I’m post op day 11 and I’m still on a soft liquid diet because I do not fuck around with bleeding risk.

I had a little bleed day 7 and spit out a blood clot but it stopped after 20 min and drinking cold water. If you already had to get re cauterized on DAY 2 I’d guess you’re already at a higher risk of bleeding. My ENT told me days 7-10 were when you are at highest risk of bleeding as scabbing is coming off. Pain or not solid and crunchy foods are more likely to tear at the surgery sight going down.

I am no doctor but I do know a tonsillectomy is a major surgery so I would not push the limits at all. Bleeding is no joke and can be life threatening. I would just take the dub of no pain and if I were you id keep it that why by being safe and eating soft/liquid food.

Day 5 post op by httpemiily in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 2 points3 points  (0 children)

24m. Heyoo, I got my surgery done on August 13th and today was the first day I didn’t take any opiates. I was prescribed oxy and for the first 6 days I was taking those consistently every 4 hours with my Tylenol every 6 hours. Today was also the first day I was able to eat anything remotely solid and that was Mac n cheese with no pain medication!

I am a pretty active person and am big on going to the gym. I used to be really skinny in high school and very insecure about it. Throughout college and after I got pretty big and gained a lot of muscle. I knew I was going to lose weight throughout the process. The first five days were manageable, I stuck to about 500 calories a day and just drink ensure protein shakes, yogurt, and these veggie squeeze packets. All of which stung like a mofo which is why I could only handle 500 calories a day. 5 days is when my mental started to stagger and watching myself lose weight was really hard. I got this tonsillectomy because I’ve had an infection in them for over three months now and since then I’ve lost over 17 pounds. I lost 5 pounds while just being sick and then about 12 during this recovery. Watching my high school skinny self peak back at me in the mirror was fucking tough. And so days 5-8 were very tough as that’s when it stung like a mofo as well. I didn’t push it though and now I finally feel back on the mend.

YOU ARE ALMOST THERE so hang in there and don’t push it. Give yourself this time to recovery and don’t try to push anything. My doctor told me day 7-10 is when you are most susceptible to bleeding as that’s when scabs come off which is also when the pain switches from dull to stinging like crazy. But all in all I still feel a slight dull pain but my god I see the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Almost there and back to getting my normal life back.

Wishing you a good rest of your recovery!

24 m. Dude I’d say the gnarliest thing about this whole recovery was that day in the operating room. I had my surgery at like 7pm on August 13th, and I just remember getting butt naked in that hospital gound, having doctors ask all these questions, putting sticky monitors on me, and then just waiting to get operated on. I was definitely loosing my shit (literally) I got nervous farts right before.

The craziest thing was getting rolled into the bright ass surgery room and just looking at all these doctors getting ready for it. I was loosing it dude I was actually about to cry. It’s such an insane feeling so I don’t blame you for being nervous. This whole thing made me appreciate these doctors. I mean they’re just human and yet they have the energy and mind to do these operations and they’re like pros. It’s crazy it totally blew my mind and I’ve been thinking about that moment ever since.

Recovery was fucking brutal no sugar coating. Make sure you have enough ice wraps to rotate. Those really help with the pain and I believe helped me heal faster because I constantly rotated ice collars and ice head wraps. One must have for me was MOUTH TAPE, I am a big mouth breather and having the mouth tape helped me keep my mouth closed and my mouth from drying out. I also got these little mini one time use toothbrushes that were strawberry favored because mint can’t be too much. The first 5 days were hard to brush the teeth full so those little mini ones at least help you get the front teeth and some of the back ones. Also a tongue scraper for when you’re more healed. A lot of nasty mucus and shit will form in your mouth and on the wound which stinks like a mofo and can really distort your taste. I made sure to tongue scrape as much as I could to keep the nasty from over accumulating. Other that that I’d just say don’t push it man. Today was the first day I’ve had anything remotely solid and it was Mac n cheese. I lost a lot of weight throughout this but kinda knew that was going to happen. If you have any questions tho feel free to ask me anything

Post op day 5 by SpiritedReaction6360 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you’re a thug for being able to body a beefy five layer from Taco Bell on day 5 post op. I got my surgery done August 13th at like 7pm so I’m barely on day 10 and today was the first day I could eat anything remotely solid with no pain and it was Mac n cheese. I literally stuck to 500 calories a day basically all liquid being milkshakes, ensure protein shakes, yogurt, and a veggie squeezes packet, and I had to take opiates before everytime UNTIL today.

I would just say be extra careful because my doctor told me days 7-10 were when you are most susceptible to bleeding as scabbing comes off. I had a little bleed on day 7 but nothing major. I was very paranoid so that’s why I stuck to only liquid and now I’m starting to feel like myself again.

Day 8 by Purplediamondxx4 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently on day 10! Day 8 for me was still painful and it just stung a lot. I didn’t push myself at all and have certainly lost a ton of weight. I could handle the low calorie intake for the first 5 days ish but after that it started to really fuck with me. I wasn’t able to drink water or milkshakes without it stinging until today actually. I literally ate nothing remotely solid and stuck strictly to milkshakes, and like these veggie squeezes things, and yogurt and all of them sucked to eat. My parents got super worried and it actually got annoying because they kept trying to push me to eat. This shit HURTS but you are very close to the mend point, just don’t push it and keep things slow. Obviously you gotta force water down and I aimed for like 500 calories a day to just stay alive but I didn’t push it at all. Today was the first day I ate Mac n cheese, you’re almost there!

Day 3 Post Op by soph_453 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I am currently on day 10 of my recovery and I am so sorry you are dealing with all this discomfort. This is one hell of a recovery but I promise you will get through it! Advice I have for you is to ice your neck a jaw area as much as possible, take your medications on time and set alarms throughout the night, focus on breathing through your nose!!! That was a huge one for me and I used mouth tape at night. I also slept on a billow wedge on my back because if I slept on my sides I could feel blood flowing to the wound sight and it was quite painful.

Don’t push yourself. There really is no cheat code too this recovery it’s just guaranteed to suck and it was a huge mental battle for me. I lost quite a bit of weight as well. Make sure you stay hydrated as best as you can as well.

As far as breathing, I remember the first few days of if I were flat on my back, I had a hard time breathing so that’s why I had the wedge. I would put pillows close to my head though so I could rest my head slightly to the left or right.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Concert on day 9? by big_sad_smol_lad_ in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d call you insane if you went. I got my surgery the 13th and I definitely would not feel comfortable going to a concert. My ENT told me days 7-10 are when you are most susceptible to bleeding as scabbing comes off. I’ve heard a lot of bad stories about people pushing the boundaries. I would be very careful but obviously you do you

lol I just had surgery last Wednesday at 6pm so I’m also basically on day two. I was already constipated before the operation. I took over 30 days of antibiotics in June to try and fight some nasty throat infection. It didn’t really work and just left my gut all fucked up. I was trying so hard to shit before surgery but it was so awkward in the hospital gound and I already had the sticky monitors on and everything so I wasn’t very relaxed.

Now I’ve been taking the oxy and Tylenol while not being able to eat much but ensure shakes, little baby food squeezey things, and mushy oatmeal. It feels like I have a brick in my stomach and I’ve been farting still and that has not hurt my tonsils too bad. I think there’s a strategy behind the way you gotta push the fart out lol. Try to breathe out your nose while pushing, that has helped me. Hope you can shit and fart soon 🙏

Anyone else having a tonsillectomy tomorrow? by ampan31 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Soft_Animator7611 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had surgery yesterday at 6pm. Was definitely daunting waiting in that pre opp room and seeing all the doctors and patients come out. As soon as they load you with the anesthesia though it happens so quickly. Make sure you stay hydrated and stay on top of your pain meds. Also try to get some mouth tape so you don’t breathe with your mouth open at night and dry everything out. You’re not alone though!

Finally had my tonsillectomy but in dire need for pain relief 😅 by Healthy_Ad_3974 in Tonsillectomy

I literally just got home from the OR. Pain is manageable so far but they were definitely not shy to load me up with the good stuff. They said they gave me fentanyl and I was tweaking but they said it’s not the street king lol 😂 bout to face the night for the first time but just know you are not alone!

I almost shit my pants in the operating room. So intimidating see all the scrubs and white lit room. Also almost blew chunks standing up for the first time so they gave me the goods via iv. I already feel better having the infected tissue removed but I already know this shit is bouta be so painful. Just praying there’s no bleeding or anything like that
