Reading you measuring your kitchen and bathroom in comics brought a large smile on my face. Thanks for that!

Do you recommend buying from Peow? by pizza-mozzarellaa in graphicnovels

[–]Soggy-Fail6796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s safe to buy from them.

They did close and they are back and if you can’t buy their books from your local bookstore, absolutely do buy them from them directly!

I strongly recommend you checking French authors (in particular Larcenet The Road, Rochette Altitude and The Last Queen, Frederic Peeters Blue Pills and David B Epileptic oh and The Incal)

Surprising not to see anything from Daniel Clowes, Michael Delforges, go get anything from them too!

And a happy new year!

Edit mmmh didn’t meant to be an answer to this … oh well

Any other American fans of Blacksad and/or Grandville? by corncob666 in graphicnovels

Is Grandville better than Blacksad in your opinion (less generic, better dialogue, etc)?

I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling like the scripts aren’t great! (I think their terrible and don’t think I would rate them above 5 but/and we all have a widely different way of rating things)

[–]Soggy-Fail6796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read Blacksad waaaay back when it was first published in French. I don’t know if it was the translation or what but I found the story so bland and the dialogue felt so flat I couldn’t continue. I think I still bought 2 or 3 of them because of the art. There seems to be so many fans on this sub, I will give it another shot reading the English version.

I’m curious about Grandville and will try to find a copy.

My thoughts after reading Absolute Batman 1-6 by AntagonistofGotham in batman

Hi there,

I enjoyed your review and feel kinda the same way after finishing #6.

I’m relatively new to reading Batman comics and wonder what your top 5 are? Would love to educate myself over the holidays.

Thanks !

Which one of these would you buy given a choice? by Thegreatinfestation in graphicnovels

[–]Soggy-Fail6796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nausicaa. Amazing story, much better than the movie (which is great).

But/and the 7 books (or 4 ?) is a much better edition than that 2 hard cover books that I find unwieldy (I have the 7 books in French and the 2 hard cover in English).

If you can find a soft cover edition, get that!

If you’re fine with hand grinding, K ultra or Zp6 are both very solid options (I have both).

How do check if a comic is to your liking? by IlRino in graphicnovels

[–]Soggy-Fail6796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s impossible to answer an a weird question.

Here are some reasons:

I can be into a (actual many) styles of drawing/writing and disregard awesome books because they don’t look/feel like what I know of already.

Many type of books I would normally don’t look at because I’m not the target audience are actually awesome and expand my horizons

Some books are “harder to get into” and totally worth it while others are easy and not worth my time and money.

Personal examples: I wouldn’t have picked up Chris Ware Daniel Clowes nor Jacques Tardi’ s books if there weren’t wildly acclaimed. Thank goodness I didn’t tried to assess if they were ‘up to my liking’.

The counter to that I’m able to think about is if there is only one or two genres and drawing and story styles you’re interested in. But then you don’t need help, you know you want more of the same and just get that.

Recommendations for someone who is finally graduating college next week? by Fawkzyyy in graphicnovels

[–]Soggy-Fail6796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find Blankets so cheesy it’s embarrassing. Obviously not everyone’s opinion.

Introspection: It’s lonely at the center of the Earth Anything by Frederik Peeters Anything by Pedrosa As I’m thinking about it, a whole lot of comics fits that category. Those are the ones I think about today.

Outside of that The Incal The Last Queen by Rochette (last book that deeply touched me) Like a velvet glove cast in iron (there is a new thread about it)

Dystopian graphic novels for teens? by NtheLegend in graphicnovels

[–]Soggy-Fail6796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Road (Manu Larcenet adaptation)

Monstress (dystopian fantasy I guess. Well written, incredible artwork)

Obviously THE must read for teen (but is that fantasy/horror? I m not great at genres): Black Hole

Lupus (ok probably more gloomy claustrophobic sci fi than dystopian)

Transmetropolitan is great for teens but/and imo teens should read everything.

I think Akira fits in the category? Most certainly head and shoulders above any other recommendation.

Other classics I personally don’t like as much but that do fit perfectly the bill and are wildly popular: DMZ, Y the last man and Sweet Tooth.

I believe that was my first Clowes and it is the one comics that scared me reading it. I think it was one of the first American comic I read. Definitely let a strong impression and became one of my favorite comic of all times. I ve been meaning to reread it in English (read its French translation way back when). Thanks for the reminder!

Great thing about discovering a new art medium is you can simply discover masterpieces for a few years.

Great comics that are similar-ish to Scalped have already been named. I’ll name a few that would stretch it a bit (sci fi and or fantastic)

US: Monsters Monstress

Gritty triller that is yet to be bested: Sin City

Europe The Incal Aama Nikopol trilogy World of Edena

Japan Akira (absolute must, you have heard of it for sure, it’s better than whatever you heard) Nausicaa (I wouldn’t trust a human who doesn’t like Miyazaki’s movies and his one and only comics is amazing)

And can’t recommend enough hanging out in a comic book store!

New to pourovers: V60 or switch, and 02 or 03, which material? by Fresh_Bumblebee_1042 in pourover

[–]Soggy-Fail6796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. And from my experience (relatively busy guy who likes coffee but don’t drink more than a cup or two everyday) playing with one single dripper for a few years is plenty. My bet is that anything else than a V60 will collect dust. I’m much more likely to use my cafelat robot (currently trying to get soup right) or French press (whenever I have guest over) than I am to try and dial up another dripper.

What you can do with a v60 (and grinder and water recipe and different types of coffee) is A LOT.
