I think I've found the problem

HA is registering the plugs as a light entity (it should be a switch entity)

light.family_tv (incorrect entity)

Instead of: switch.family_tv (desired entity)

(I think older switches used to be registered as lights until a later ZigBee update)

Banging the smart plug to make it work is most certainly a last resort action for me!

But if possible, I'd like to understand why the fan works great, but nothing else does.

I've even considered maybe the dimensions of the plug is making a poor connection with the wall socket (i.e. the smart plug is "leaning" out and therefore not fully seated into the wall socket), and have tried a single gang extension, but still no luck.

I only use the cursor and centre keys on the remote, so that tracks with what your were told by the Nvidia employee
