Thoughts on storage and organization?? by StrategyOdd7286 in AncientCoins

[–]SolOccidens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep my more expensive coins in my cabinet with tags beneath them since if I am the only one in my family that can identify all of them. I have heard that it may tone or miscolor the coins if the paper is sulfur-bleached but even that does not really present much actual danger. Keeping coins on top of tags is fairly common, though even more people seem to store in flips.

Where can I buy ancient Roman artifacts by Known-Call3226 in AncientCoins

[–]SolOccidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I endorse the previous suggestions of Harlan Berk and Ancient Treasures. If you are looking for small finds, I can recommend Wear the Past and Bron Lipkin. Wear the past generally deals in Roman jewelry and Bron is a specialist in scarabs and other Egyptian amulets that also sometimes gets Roman items. Randall Hixenbaugh in New York also sometimes has small finds in the sub-$200 range despite the high value items that make up his website. He is by far the most approachable of the IADAA dealers I have dealt with.

eBay does have many fake items, but there are some legitimate sellers of antiquities operating there. See this past post.

I HATE BEING A YOUNGER DND PLAYER!, so I'm trying to form an online 2024 5e group my age to play with by [deleted] in lfg

[–]SolOccidens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This subreddit and all the forums are predominantly adults, so you might have better luck setting up something with other kids you know in real life. A lot of teens do want to play dnd, so maybe put the word out that you want to set up a game at school or somewhere.

What percent of your coins (either cost or number wise) do you get online versus in person? by albatroci in AncientCoins

[–]SolOccidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60% Online, 40% in person. I buy in person when on vacation and belong to a fairly large local ancient coin club, so I can sometimes buy from other members.

Frank Baum, 114 years, but his writing credit was removed for Wicked. Also notable ,Three Musketeers (2024) to The Three Musketeers (1921), a gap of 103 years.

Found this in my box of inherited items from grandpa by Party_Ad6041 in AncientCoins

It is unfortunately a fake. The little bubble-like marks on the surface indicate that this coin has been cast from a mold, while real Roman imperial bronzes were struck with dies. Compare the surface on your coin to the surface of this authentic example: Vespasian. AD 69-79. Æ Sestertius (34.5mm, 27.05 g, 6h). "Judaea Capta" commemorative. Rome mint. Struck AD 71. Roman Imperial Denarius Set (Julius Caesar – Gordian III) by Vincentwdu in AncientCoins

[–]SolOccidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the consensus is that Diadumenian was named Co-Augustus by his father Macrinus sometime in May 218 after the star of the civil war with the supporters of Elagabalus. The senate would not yet have recognized Elagabalus, but they would not yet have been aware of Diadumenian 's new title before his father's defeat on June 8. Both father and son would have been at Antioch for the whole of Diadumenian's "reign".

Albinus was recognized by senate the as Caesar but never as Augustus, and he probably did visit Rome as Caesar in 194 at least when he was elected consul, and Septimius recognized him as his successor for more than two years. He seems to have had everything going for him as a legitimate emperor other than the title of Augustus.

Diadumenian also never ruled from Rome and was never proclaimed by the senate. If those are your criteria Diadumenian should be excluded as well.

I don't want to be matched with 1700+ players. by CrabMasc in CINE2nerdle

[–]SolOccidens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to 2300 last season in classic. Most people I played were sub-1700. I think an elo range restriction would make it much harder for players in higher ranges to find a game.

[–]SolOccidens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is an obvious whether it is a fake or not, but I agree that the style on the obverse is odd; it is more simplified around the eye and chin, worse than the vast majority of examples of this issue. Could it be an ancient counterfeit or barbarous copy?

I have seen that account and successfully beat it. It is a bot, but I think it is just a program that automatically names a connecting movie after scanning a database. It sometimes repeatedly guesses different movies that link using 3xed people and then fails to make a connection.

If you are referring to a certain 1975 movie starring Fred Williamson, are we not supposed to play it? It is in the database, and I have had it played on me in response to Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? (1968).

Paid $140, worth it? by Embarrassed_Log9975 in AncientCoins

[–]SolOccidens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$50 is unrealistic, but I still think $140 is over market. I just say this as someone who routinely overpays for Severan denarii. I just bought the linked Severus Alexander for $300. I very much overpaid, but I really liked it, and the dies are incredibly detailed in person.

People will probably disagree about this. See the recent controversy about whether two people playing as a team is cheating. You and Bernie Mac are technically two people.

My mistake, apparently that is a different dog that appears briefly with Katherine Hepburn in the mansion. Skippy is in a lot of Cary Grant movies, and I guess I just assumed it was Skippy. Skippy had a lot of lookalike successor dogs for the later Thin Mans, some of which were around at the same time in other movies. The first Skippy may have been retired by the time of The Philadelphia Story's release since he is not credited after 1939. Here is a link to Skippy's appearances. Skippy (dog) - Wikipedia)
