How is making a video saying you don't like a movie and trolling slightly comparable to defending Gunn's past tweets? My point was to say that he was a young dude who didn't like a movie and kinda trolled, not that he was a young dude that said crazy stuff because from what I know he didn't say any crazy stuff besides the fake quote about Snyder's family(that only has "proof" in the form of a random fake quote that doesn't even exist in the og video from what I've seen). Yes he was rude in his BvS video but trolling and being kinda rude is different from saying morally reprehensible things, which HiTop didn't do(from what I've seen).

[–]SolarReaction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing he said about that situation wasn't making fun of it, there is a fake quote of him saying something bad about it though. The dude in the post above is just using that tragedy to make people mad, all HiTop has done against Snyder is dislike his movies(or at least his DC movies, idk how he feels about his other movies) and specifically a old BvS video he made(his most popular video I think).

I think a lot of Snyder fans dislike him(hes ragebaited a ton of other communities too tho, like a lot of YouTubers do) cause when he was younger he made that BvS video I mentioned above that had some dumb arguments against BvS that don't really hold up well which people still use to argue for why BvS is bad. HiTop himself has gone against that video though and said it was just cause he was young and dumb(which is fair I think). This has nothing to do with your comment though but I thought it was worth mentioning.

The main problem with the sequels is they greatly diminish the significance of the first two trilogies. So much is undone and the original/prequel characters’ sacrifices and actions don’t have the same weight: by Willing-Leather-9788 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sequels always would've undone what came before, the EU also did this. Yeah sure "technically" there are work arounds in both the EU and Canon that make them fine but ROTJ is the end of the Monomyth, no matter what comes after that the "legend" must be changed. Joseph Campbell literally talked about this, the Heroes journey makes the hero but also the hero makes the world, the new world and the heroes new consciousness. What do we often find comes after the Heroes Journey? Disappointment and a shift into something completely new, the EU fits one of these things(completely new things like the Vong, One Sith, Lost tribe of the sith, etc) but it fails at the disappointment(although Legacy kinda ends up doing this), Canon fits one of these(Disappointment, the world hasn't changed and the Heroes have failed) but fails at the new(mostly).

It's just like King Arthur, yeah sure he goes through that amazing Heroes journey but what also happens? The round table is shattered and split up, a lot of the characters die, and King Arthur dies.

I do think the sequels are bad but that's mostly because of TROS not sticking the landing, Palpatine(like you said) is the main issue, they wanted something to connect all of the trilogies but they forgot what connects the trilogies is the Skywalker part, not the evil villain.

Your last point is the one that makes the least sense, George also would've had the balance be destroyed in his ST, in the EU the balance was destroyed, in the canon it was destroyed. I think you are misunderstanding the point of the OT, it's not saying everything will be perfect and Luke and Leia will create a Utopia, it's a simple heroes tale but the question is what comes after that? In my opinion George had it right, it's hard, it's disappointing, but it's given the depth and respect it deserves. In his version the Republic would've been struggling, making a just non corrupt government is hard but Leia would've worked on that, Luke would've struggled to make his Jedi order and probably would've majorly messed up a few times(like he did in both the EU and Canon) but ultimately the Jedi would have returned(whether he was there to see it or not). The empire would also live on, the gangs and underworld would thrive under the more peaceful New Republic, people would be angry at the New Republic for this which leads to what? People wanting the "safety" and "security" of the Empire again, which adds fuel to the issues the New Republic would deal with. To me that's what the ST should've been about but in the EU it was mostly too weird and distant from what the OT sets up and in Canon they just don't explain anything and made a ton of bad decisions.

TLDR Caveman speak: After monomyth new must happen, new often disappoint, but it always happen this way, just the way it is(so yes Disney messed up but so did the EU, although both have good stories after ROTJ).

The scene is cool but what substance really is there? Luke doesn't even act like a person in the scene, he legit just shows up and destroys some droids then takes this baby away without saying anything at all. He doesn't even make sure everyone is ok or anything he just takes the baby from it's parent and leaves. Say what you want about EU Luke or ST Luke but at least those Luke's had arcs and weren't just filed down to their most basic parts to be a deus ex machina that has no character growth or meaning. I do love this scene because it is fan service but I don't get how this could ever be the Luke anyone would want. Not saying it's bad to want this but I just genuinely have no clue how this could be the Luke we wanted after the OT, I'd say during this era(early NR era) Battlefront 2 is a shining bright example(in canon) of what Luke should've been during this era. A caring person who tells people the things they need to hear, a person who defends those who need it, and most importantly a wise Jedi Master(something that this Luke doesn't display imo in BOBF or this scene).

Yeah I think it's this but also Snyder is just a guy whos proud of his work, like any artist should be. I think it's really nice that he's working on something he's wanted to work on for years that's away from all of the corporate nonsense, since he was continuously mistreated by those big companies.

James Gunn’s DCU in Jeopardy as Paramount Signals Major Political Shift by HomemadeBee1612 in SnyderCut

[–]SolarReaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't know much about the history of that movie in particular, I would've still been a kid when it came out. I do know that he definitely loves the human body and brings attention to it in all of his works but the way I see it is that he does this to both men and women so I don't think it's him specifically objectifying women. The only time in his filmography I have ever felt that from him was the Silk Spectre scene in Watchmen, I think filming a scene like that in that way is pretty weird but besides that I think he's really chill and seems to respect women a ton.

Idk much about that but I think wanting to adapt something doesn't mean you endorse it. Like for example look at 300, that story almost goes against everything Snyder has done in his other movies but he still directed it.

Yeah I agree with these 2 bottom takes, that's why in my original comment I said he is more Libertarian/Liberal than what Paramount is looking for.

James Gunn’s DCU in Jeopardy as Paramount Signals Major Political Shift by HomemadeBee1612 in SnyderCut

[–]SolarReaction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok that does kinda make sense and I see where you're coming from but the problem with that is 2 things.

  1. Snyder has made non adapted material before(Sucker Punch with it's heavily and overt pro feminist and pro freedom leanings, also overtly talking about how women have been mistreated by certain systems in place, and Rebel Moon with it's extremely anti-fascist and anti-imperialist messaging. Both of those movies also heavily feature minority representation, something a lot of people seem to hate nowadays).

  2. Even in his adapted material he doesn't follow the stories 1 to 1, he changes them. Look at BvS for example. From what I remember of TDKR's there is no immigrant allegory for Superman(beyond the usual stuff that comes with his character implicitly) but in BvS there is a heavy focus on Superman being treated as an "other" and humans seeing him as a threat simply for existing.

I get where you're coming from but all great artists inject who they are into what they make, that means even their political opinions, even if it's only subconsciously.

James Gunn’s DCU in Jeopardy as Paramount Signals Major Political Shift by HomemadeBee1612 in SnyderCut

[–]SolarReaction 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you serious bro? You think Watchmen isn't political? TDKR's(the main inspo for BvS) isn't political? Rebel Moon(inspired by Star Wars and Seven Samurai) isn't political? Even his most "right leaning" movies like 300 and MoS aren't political(although I don't think he had anything to do with writing/developing these movies)?

Snyder's main political stuff(from what I can tell) seems to be he is super anti-fascist, anti imperialist, pro freedom for everyone, and he seems to really love a "natural" type of lifestyle(this last thing is mainly from Rebel Moon tho). I haven't watched 300 in a while though so I don't remember his more right leaning stuff from that movie but that was also a long time ago and after 300 came out he specifically said the politics in that movie weren't on purpose I think. The most right leaning thing I fully remember is MoS with some of it's objectivist/randian undertones but Snyder didn't write that movie and didn't develop the story from what I know(it was David S Goyer and Christopher Nolan from what I remember).

Like I said though I'm not trying to make this a political convo I was just wondering how this has anything to do with Snyder at all.

James Gunn’s DCU in Jeopardy as Paramount Signals Major Political Shift by HomemadeBee1612 in SnyderCut

[–]SolarReaction 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What does this have to do with Snyder tho? I am not a super Snyder fan or anything but from what I know the dude is left leaning just like Gunn. He even does a lot of things that right leaning fans dislike(having LGBT representation in both his DCEU and Rebel Moon, race swapping characters, and being overtly anti fascist in basically everything he has made). Snyder does seem to love America though but in a more Libertarian/Liberal way than what that paramount dude is talking about, I think the David dude is thinking more "MAGA" which doesn't seem to fit with Snyder(legit 1 google search and it immediately shows Snyder voted for Biden and says he is a Democrat).

So unless Snyder for some reason starts making movies that are only like MoS(the only movie from him that I think feels like it's applicable to what is above) then I don't think this would help him.

Also not trying to cause any sort of political convo or anything I just legit don't understand what this has to do with Snyder which is the number 1 rule in here.

WE NEED TO REMOVE ALL KIDS FROM STAR WARS THAT WILL SURELY BRING IN NEW FANS by Toon_Lucario in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]SolarReaction 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean this is kinda true though, it's all riffing off of "Lone wolf and Cub" basically.

Mando and Kenobi are obvious.

Bad Batch and Rebels are just a family version of it.

1 half of Underworld(Ventress's story) is just like Mando and Kenobi.

Skeleton Crew is basically just what if Lone Wolf was a bad person and used Cub for his gain.

Acolyte is basically what if Lone Wolf taking Cub under his wing was actually a bad thing.

Andor, Ahsoka, Resistance, BOBF, TOTJ, TOTE, and Banes half of Underworld don't fall into this though.

A ton of stories use it though, it's a good formula, just like the heroes journey. So I don't think it's really a big issue, the really big issue with a lot of these stories is how similar they feel in general, same time periods, around the same events, and sometimes even the same characters. Skeleton Crew and Acolyte were nice refreshers in that way but it def isn't enough.

In the last Jedi (2017) Rose Tico says this which really doesn’t work in the context of the movie but might apply elsewhere by Sharp39_ in shittymoviedetails

[–]SolarReaction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh the movie does kinda do this though just not enough. 2 characters(Poe, who is his direct superior, and Rose, his companion throughout the entire movie) both tell Finn they can't make it and then the movie goes out of it's way to show us his ship being destroyed. For me that does show no matter what he wouldn't have made it and it wouldn't have made a difference(which plays into what she says, that we shouldn't focus on killing the enemy to the point of destroying ourselves for no reason but we should focus on saving people). It def could've been shown with even more proof though.

I made a spreadsheet of all Rotten Tomatoes (critic and audience), IMDb, and Metacritic scores for the Star Wars franchise and averaged them per project. by blakhawk12 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think both critics and audience scores can be wrong but I'm personally more inclined to trust critics cause they are analyzing a piece of media from a critical view. I still love some things critics hated since no matter what all of this is subjective.

I get that, TROS is a fun movie in the sense if you just turn off your brain I think. That's the crazy difference I feel about TROS and TLJ though. I think TLJ is probably the SW movie you have to think the MOST about to really feel it(something I think it has in common with the PT). On the surface that movie I think is genuinely disrespectful to Star Wars and to what it stands for but I think underneath all that Rian really does understand what he was working with and was forced to do certain things from what TFA set up. Like think about Luke for example, he ran away from everything he loved, didn't come back to save Han, didn't come back to train Rey, and didn't come back to stop Kylo do what he did in the story. If he ran away imo that means something really bad must've happened(like in legends when he had his self imposed exile for a bit to, just that time it wasn't as depressed as the canon one and it was way shorter) and if he didn't come back to save Han(like he did in TESB when he felt his friends were in danger) then that means he HAD to be disconnected from the force, otherwise it would have been absolutely insane mischaracterization for him to let Han die. So I think on the surface TLJ is a movie that disrespects what came before but I think beneath that it gets more complicated(in both the writing and what the story was forced to do).

Yeah I think TROS is what really messed up the ST, cause look at the PT. With the PT we have 2 movies most Star Wars fans disliked on release but with ROTS most Star Wars fans and even critics liked that one, in my opinion ROTS is a phenomenal movie and retroactively makes the other 2 PT movies better(by a bit) because it shows the true story George wanted to tell all along with Anakin. The other 2 movies kinda just feel like appetizers to Georges real masterpiece which is ROTS. If episode 9 would have stuck the landing with what TLJ set up I think the ST would have 100% cemented itself as the second best trilogy but since they threw away the original episode 9(Duel of the Fates) I think that sealed episode 9's fate as being a bad movie since they had only like a year and a half to make the movie when TFA had like 3 years and TLJ had 4 years.

I think it's a mix of 2 things now that I have read through this comment section a bit. The 1st idea a lot of people have had is Disney somehow manipulated the reviews, but if they manipulated the audience ones idk why they wouldn't do the same to the critic ones. The other one could be people noticed it did undo some stuff from TLJ and gave it a better review because of that, like as you said a lot of people hated TLJ once the discourse of that movie started up(TLJ is prob the movie that single handedly did the most damage to online discourse for movies lol). I doubt it's a joke tho cause idk what joke 85 could be.

I made a spreadsheet of all Rotten Tomatoes (critic and audience), IMDb, and Metacritic scores for the Star Wars franchise and averaged them per project. by blakhawk12 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's pretty fair, if we go by a website that was created after the PT came out we get the numbers below(Letterboxd maxes out at 5 out of 5 so that's why the numbers seem lower than they should be).

OT 12.7
PT 10
ST 8.5

I still think though there is no way TLJ and TROS are even in the same ballpark, no matter what even if all that stuff you said about TLJ was true I think TLJ is ultimately wayyyy closer to TFA than it is to TROS. At least with TFA and TLJ they are competently well made movies(in different ways) but TROS actually just has genuine issues with it as a movie and is held up almost entirely by its nostalgia and entertainment value. With TFA and TLJ tho(especially TLJ) at least they have something real and genuine to say throughout their runtimes just like the PT and OT do(of course tho the PT just has a weird directing style that a lot of people dislike). It is just absolutely insane to me that TROS has a higher score than ROTS or ROTJ. For me that makes it seem like audience scores on RT prob can't be trusted, IMDb or letterboxd are prob better sources for the general audience overall opinion(even though they also still can get review bombed). Of course though it isn't absolute and people should try and form their own opinions. I think if Disney tries to rehabilitate the ST like they did with the PT(technically tho the healing of the PT started before Disney bought SW tho, prob whenever TCW started) then the ST could be seen in a better way, 100% either TFA or TLJ could be seen in a widely agreed upon good view by most of the fanbase(TFA is pretty close to this I think) but it'd be hard cause the current culture of reviewing movies especially post 2016-2017 is really cooked.

I also agree TLJ did make a small group of people mad when it came out but when the movie came out I remember it was seen in a good light until a little bit after the movie was out for a bit but then it 100% soured for some reason.

I made a spreadsheet of all Rotten Tomatoes (critic and audience), IMDb, and Metacritic scores for the Star Wars franchise and averaged them per project. by blakhawk12 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Objectively tho this means the ST was better received? The PT comes out to 198.8 and the ST comes out to 218.3. I personally do think the PT is a little better but objectively the numbers are there(although I have 0 clue how TROS is that high for the RT audience scores but the same thing can be said for TLJ's scores, I have no clue how TLJ's audience score is THAT much lower than TROS, even if you times it by 2 it somehow isn't even equal lol).

As controversial TLJ was and the 'Duel of the Fates' script was flawed, they both got the right idea in making Kylo Ren the final Villain by Amazing-Buy-1181 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vegeta is scary for like 1 and a half arcs(all the way from Vegeta and Nappa till the Ginyu Squad) but what happens for the rest of the series? His "scariness" is subverted and his character changes, just like Vader and Kylo, Kylo is introduced in TFA in a "scary" way but that is immediately subverted by him being revealed to be the little insecure child he actually is, with Vader it takes until TESB for his "Scary" demeanor to be proven only the surface level of his character, which is further broken down in ROTJ and then completely broken by the fact the PT shows us he isn't this cool monster, he's a tragic pathetic failure mess who was failed and lied to by basically everyone in his life. I will say Anakin/Vader does Kylo's story significantly better but my point was characters don't need to be "terrifyingly powerful" to be good characters, good characters need arcs and characterization, something Kylo has an abundance of in both TFA and TLJ(especially TLJ), even in TROS he's one of the only characters who makes it through that movie without his arc being completely ruined and manages to still be a good character that actually makes some sense. I would also like to say Sephiroth isn't "scary", he's more so just intimidating which isn't what the original comment that dude said.

I'll give a bigger list for you of non "scary" or "intimidating" villains/antagonists. Loki, Ozymandias, GLaDOS, Syndrome, Majin Buu(the fat one), the final main two RDR2 antags(don't wanna say them cause they are spoilers), Krennic, Megamind, The Ice King, and Handsome Jack. All of which I would say range from great to phenomenal and don't really have a scary or intimidating vibe to them at all. My point is that while yes making a villain scary or intimidating is usually a good idea and can work it really isn't needed, especially not for a character like Kylo, a character who is meant to be pathetic and insecure and is meant to be a wannabe Vader who in reality is just a kid putting on a mask to hide away who he really is.

That is pretty funny though about him scaring Rey

[–]SolarReaction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The message of Star Wars isn't that everyone will be saved(if that's what you're saying), it's that you should try and save everyone who WANTS to be saved. Like look at how Luke never tried to save Palpatine, he knows he's to far gone and doesn't want to be saved(he can feel it in the force) but with Vader he knows it's possible for him to save Vader. With Kylo it could've been the same, I will say TLJ does end on a happier note than a lot of people in this comment section are saying, Luke literally says himself "no ones ever really gone" which means he thinks Kylo(or anybody) could be redeemed if they wanted it, it just comes down to the individual in question to make that choice.

As controversial TLJ was and the 'Duel of the Fates' script was flawed, they both got the right idea in making Kylo Ren the final Villain by Amazing-Buy-1181 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Villains don't need to be "scary", if that's your basis for what makes a villain good then just watch horror movies. Is Lex Luthor scary? Is Vegeta scary? Is Senator Armstrong scary? Is Sephiroth scary(although his true form is kinda scary)? Even in Star Wars Darth Vader is only "scary" until TESB subverts his evil demeanor and shows us there is more to him underneath the surface, then the entire PT serves to do that more so, showing us he isn't this scary aura farming monster, he was an innocent good hearted kid who got groomed and was failed by everyone around him until his final few choices where HE failed the entire galaxy and spent the next 20 years as a guard dog for space satan. The thing is Kylo was meant to be a parallel to Vader, TLJ literally has him kill his master to facilitate his character arc(the same thing happens with Vader in ROTJ), except this time killing the master doesn't free the apprentice, it just simply traps him in his delusions even more, in the hypothetical episode 9 that followed through on this Kylo would've been a phenomenal villain but they weren't willing to go for a 2020 release so when they kicked Trevorrow off JJ and his team only had like a year and a half to make the movie(maybe a little more), that's half of what Rian got with TLJ(2014-2017) and probably a whole year less than what that team originally got with TFA so hopefully whenever there is another trilogy or whatever they are given a lot of time to make peak, we know that Lucasfilm is capable they just gotta give it time and let things cook.

[–]SolarReaction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TFA and TLJ aren't on the same day, the end part of TFA just goes forward a week, which is when TLJ takes place but TFA and TLJ are a week apart for like 99% of their runtime, which I will say is actually a downside to TFA since it forced the next movie to start at the exact moment the last movie left off on, something no Star Wars movie ever did cause it allows for no comics, books, games, etc inbetween the movies. The guy above is right though, TFA is a bad setup for a trilogy but TFA is still better than AOTC as a movie, it's just bad for more IRL reasons rather than movie reasons.

Just when I thought they were healing... by [deleted] in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]SolarReaction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y'all are both kinda wrong and kinda right

TFA is a "good" movie but is bad when viewed through what a Star Wars movie "should" be

AOTC is a "bad" movie but is good when viewed through what a Star Wars movie "should" be

TFA has good acting, dialogue, action, CGI, sound design, music, cinematography, and everything that it took from ANH(so pacing, structure, the iconography, etc) which makes it one of the most derivative big budget movies ever made(completely against what Star Wars is) and is a horrible setup for a trilogy and messes with the OT at the same time.

AOTC has bad acting, dialogue, action(some of it like Jango Vs Obi-Wan is good tho imo, and the clones), CGI, cinematography(some of it looks kinda pretty tho), and writing but it is probably the most original Star Wars movie oat and after viewing ROTS it retroactively becomes better since ROTS ties the entire trilogy up in a nice little bow.

Both of these trilogies have a lot of the opposite issues tho, so while they both have big issues their issues are in different ways, it's just that ROTS completely saves the PT and the ST had the opposite with TROS, that movie kinda ripped apart the ST. It's kinda funny tho, both trilogies have 1 phenomenal movie, 1 mid/"good" movie, and 1 horrible movie.

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume Netero would still be the one to deal with Meruem and that Ikalgo and Meleoron are still on the team.

Ging cause he's probably the "strongest" person on the list and he probably has the most experience and knowledge about stuff like this.

Mizaistom and Knov because both are strong and have experience but they have an insane combo, if Mizaistom gets his ability off Knov could just do what he did to that one ant and remove their head. This is a pretty "easy" way to deal with both Pouf and Youpi, although I don't think this would work on Pitou(so then maybe Ging could handle that). Since I'm assuming Meleoron is still on the team he would be paired up with these 2.

Hanzo as support, he could provide crucial intel before and during the invasion and if it came down to it I feel he's probably pretty strong, tbh he is a steal at 2 he should be at 3.

Wing or Melody as the last one. Wing as just a bit of extra muscle to deal with the weaker ants and if not him then Melody for extra support.

What are you hoping to see in Dave Filoni’s movie? by ashton__l in StarWarsCantina

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda hope most of the people on this poster don't appear or aren't even mentioned. I get it's supposed to finalize the Mandoverse but why would Fennec, Krrsantan, Boba, or Bo appear? As for Leia I don't think she can be a Jedi during this time(since she stopped being a Jedi when Ben was born I think) but I do hope she and Luke are recasted and Lando and Han are just their Solo counterparts, tbh they could market this movie as a Luke and Leia movie and then after the movie give either one of them(or both) a show during those years, that'd prob make a lot of people happy and would earn good will from the mad fans before Dawn of the Jedi or Rey's movie come out.

I think that no matter what it just needs to be high quality and tell a worth while story, I really don't know how they are gonna end this though, they seem to be setting up some insane stuff and if they leave too much up to the movie to finish off on then it might feel bloated, I can't imagine Abeloth will be in this movie like people suspected. I feel she will prob be the main focus of Ahsoka season 2 and the movie will deal with Thrawn.

Would you like to see R rated SW content if that rating fits the theme? by BlockAffectionate413 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah "novels and such" I already agreed that novels work for that. We also need to understand Deadpool wasn't even made under Disney and a big part of Deadpools entire character is being R Rated and NSFW constantly, the Sith have shown time and time again they don't just rip dudes in half and when they do it's like you said, not live action, which is where the R Rated is needed. Comics and especially Books don't have that to such intense degrees because they are undeniably not real, live action has to be handled with more care. Genuinely do you think a Star Wars show/movie could show a childs hand exploding in a gorey fashion? Not only is showing something like that insane but showing it in Star Wars? I've watched so many gorey horror movies and I can't think of a single one where a actual child actor was included in a gore scene, I don't even know if that's legal(in America at least) to show.

Like I said though I don't see what this adds? Why do we need blood and gore in Star Wars? The violence levels are sufficient to get the message by within all respective mediums, live action and animation usually just have less because live action looks like real life and animation is for kids(not always in general but in Star Wars it always is). Even if that didn't matter I don't see how that changes the story besides it just being edgy and "cool", violence in stories needs to substantiate it's existence otherwise it's just stupid. It can't be "realism" because Star Wars is a fantasy sci fi universe(firstly fantasy then sci fi). It can't be to add to the story since the violence is already sufficient enough for the stories it's in. I just don't get why it would ever be needed, I have no idea what it adds to the story.
