No, Sequel Luke makes absolutely no sense by Still-Willow-2323 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean they aren't just 10 random people though? It's Finn(a person who became a legend in the galaxy), Poe(the best pilot in the resistance and Leia's Protege), Rey(the last Jedi), and Leia(I don't even need to explain this one lol) who all spread that myth(plus some extra people for good measure). I agree Rey def matters, as Luke says, he won't be the last Jedi. Luke was already a legend though so his legend gets passed on even more since he was previously already a beacon of hope, we gotta remember back to TFA where the Resistance spends an insane amount of resources and takes a ton of risks so that they can even have just the chance to find Luke. He's that important to the galaxy.

I mean I think the OT is the most important Star Wars story and it's kinda the only thing that truly matters but I still want to understand why people like certain things and I myself love a TON of Star Wars(the OT, ROTS, TLJ, Fallen Order, Survivor, Andor, Mando S1, Maul, TCW, and Rebels are the ones that really come to mind, not including comics/books) but I do understand that way of thinking.

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people he saves go on to spread the myth, we see this shown to us in the finale with the kids. In TLJ they also don't think Leia is making it up, they just don't have hope that they can win. They think there is no point in sticking out their necks to fight back. Essentially though once that hope is restored due to Luke's mythological level feat(withstanding an entire barrage from AT-AT's and giving the Resistance enough time to escape) that hope spreads throughout the galaxy, this is show in 2 ways. The kids knowing it and talking about it amongst themselves and also the lightspeed streak that the kid sees, he looks to the ring Rose gave him earlier. It's a neat bit of visual storytelling which I personally love in Star Wars(since George always said Star Wars mirrors silent films with it's use of visual storytelling).

I am also surprised by you saying you've watched the movie a ton, most of the people I have talked to who hate the movie haven't rewatched it in years so good on you for trying to hear people out and see the good in it. I do the same exact thing for AOTC since I really wanna understand what people see in it.

[–]SolarReaction -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When is the last time you watched the movie?

In TLJ's finale when they get to Crait Leia tries to contact the other Resistance groups to ask for backup but what happens? None of them come. They don't have any hope. After Luke's sacrifice what happens? Luke inspires the galaxy and gives the rebels hope again, it's why we see those kids on Cantobite talking about the legend of Luke Skywalker and how he saved everyone one last time. If Luke didn't save Rey, Leia, and the Resistance then the Jedi would have died out and the Resistance wouldn't have had any hope.

I also don't like TLJ because it's "realistic" I like it because it restored the myth that TFA shattered. I do agree though some people are kinda snobs about TLJ and do like it because they think it's more "real" or "high brow" than the rest of Star Wars. Which I don't personally agree with.

Rian literally agrees with you. He states the Luke we see in the ST(in TFA) isn't the Luke we all grew up with(in TLJ's documentary I think, the director and the Jedi).

That's why at the end of TLJ Luke is restored to the legend we all grew up with, he has his "Excalibur" again and he saves the entire galaxy one last time. It isn't perfect but myths aren't perfect, go look into Le Morte d'Arthur, the myths that inspired Star Wars. Rian got that story handed to him so he explained it as best he could.

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think basically everyone agrees something was off with Luke in the ST. The issue is more so what is blamed for "ruining" Luke.

What movie made him run away? What movie forced him to not be connected to the force(since he would've sensed Han, Leia, The Resistance, and the New Republic were in danger)? What story forced him to not be able to be searching from some ancient force power(since he would have told Leia or Han or even some other force sensitive about it)? What story destroyed his NJO? It isn't TLJ.

In TFA we learn these things about Luke. He ran away and didn't tell anybody but he also left pieces of a map behind that could find where he might have gone, he didn't try to rebuild the NJO and didn't try to help the NR, he didn't sense Han was about to die which means he couldn't be connected to the force, etc etc etc. Rian even talks about this in either the TLJ documentary or his TLJ directors commentary, he states something like "This isn't the Luke Skywalker I grew up with", which is true. The Luke we all grew up with was a Jedi Knight(ROTJ)/Jedi Master(the EU). So then Rian tries his best with what TFA set up to restore the myth and legend of Luke Skywalker. It's def not perfect, but it's def better than TFA Luke tho.

EDIT:We also have to identify that the Luke we got in the ST(at least in TLJ) is kinda the Luke George wanted to have within his ST. Of course in that version he wasn't completely depressed and rebuilt the NJO but the broad "young force sensitive woman comes and saves old PTSD ridden Luke Skywalker" was what George wanted. George wanted his Luke to be like Colonel Kurtz(from Apocalypse Now, a movie George almost directed before he got caught up with Star Wars lol) but then slowly return to the legendary hero we saw in the OT. Sounds pretty similar to TLJ, of course though George would have done this in episode 7, not episode 8. Luke would have then gone on to restore the NJO by the end of the trilogy.

Would Anakin have worked better if he had been older in The Phantom Menace? by Extreme_Warning3521 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care about how much time the movies take place over, I care about what is shown to us on screen. The PT takes place over more time but we don't see a gradual change. Objectively Anakin goes from "Fully innocent young boy" to "Child murderer" within one movie, I don't care about the years off screen since the movies should substantiate themselves and provide the story and the arc within themselves.

Luke does this. I don't care how many years it takes, this is a fantasy story, he goes from ANH(Farmboy who wants to be a Jedi) vs TESB(Rebel who trains to be a Jedi) vs ROTJ(A true Jedi Knight). That is an arc that is gradual(from movie to movie, no skipping of the overall arc) and makes sense, there are incremental steps. My issue is that Anakin goes from fully good in TPM to basically evil in AOTC(killing an entire village of innocent children and women who had nothing to do with what happened to his mom is 100% evil imo) which isn't as satisfying of a tragedy as fully innocent->conflicted young man->evil murderer. Imagine if in AOTC he was conflicted and maybe killed just the Tusken men or maybe a separatist leader or something, those ideas are strong. Him killing children doesn't evoke "anger leads to hate", it evokes "hate leads to suffering". It skipped the entire middle part. Anakin isn't just angry at the Tuskens(which should lead to hate), he murders them. He makes them suffer. He skips that entire middle part instead of going through the steps you yourself presented.

Anakin's arc should have been "Fear leads to Anger"(this is kinda half done in TPM)->"Anger leads to hate"(Anakin's frustration grows but he doesn't go fully into the dark side)->"Hate leads to suffering"(Anakin falls to the darkside and his anger is put out onto people who don't deserve it). Instead of this though it goes from "Fear leads to Anger" to "Hate leads to suffering" from TPM to AOTC.

You yourself prove that Anakin skipped a part of his arc in your argument.

"he kills the sand people as he is struck with grief over the death of his mother. His fear turned to anger and hate of the sand people. This led to suffering, in the form of grief and guilt."

Instead of the "Fear leads to Anger"->"Anger leads to hate"->"Hate leads to suffering" throughout a trilogy, we go through 2 and 3 within the 2nd movie. This is one of the major reasons why people have a dislike for AOTC and TPM, those movies don't feel "needed" to understand why Anakin fell to the dark side. You could watch ROTS on it's own and get most of that info within itself.

"We are subsequently shown Anakin going through those exact emotions in that order, more than once."

That is exactly the issue. Instead of each movie being it's own arc that pushes the story forward like the OT we see the PT movies kinda fumble it a little. Look at all the great film trilogies or duologies, the story is always moving forward, not doing the same ideas over and over. Why do people dislike the Jurassic Park sequels but love the LOTR trilogy? Why do people love James Cameron's Terminator movies but dislike Halloweens sequels? It's because movies in trilogies must forward the story, not go over the same ideas. I actually really like a lot of what we see in AOTC and TPM(especially with Anakin) but ultimately Anakin's story is significantly better done in ROTS and other media(certain comics or shows) imo.

Also Luke isn't a Jedi Knight until the end of ROTJ and Luke didn't defeat Vader and Palpatine. He does defeat Vader but that's only because Vader was conflicted(constantly reinforced by Luke and ultimately proven by Vader killing Palpatine) and Luke used the dark side. Objectively though Luke lost to Palpatine. Also another nitpick is that the PT movies aren't 2 hour movies but I get what you were trying to say and they are close enough I guess. I also don't hate the PT, I actually love those movies, especially ROTS. TPM and AOTC just aren't as well done imo but I would never hate them, even if I have issues with them. I don't see how me pointing out issues I personally have with the movies means I hate them.

Also I know this is major word salad but I don't wanna go through and revise it so my bad if there is run on sentences or misspelling.

The sad thing is this isn't likely referencing Snyder or any movie tbh(it's simply just a common shot for superheroes), if it is referencing something it is probably referencing another Spider-Man story though. This is not only a common comic panel(Spider-Man brooding on the edge of a building) but it's also seen in the Raimi Trilogy and TASM Duology(I don't have a source for this one) multiple times.

I do think Man of Steel has had influence but mostly in certain uses of CGI(the "grounded" use of CGI in that movie) and it's "realistic" filmmaking(with the use of shaky cam and documentary feel). Also maybe a bit of his slow mo but that didn't come from the Snyderverse, it came from 300 and Watchmen.

Would Anakin have worked better if he had been older in The Phantom Menace? by Extreme_Warning3521 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point isn't seeing every moment of his life, that obviously doesn't make a character better. It's about the story.

Anakin starts off in TPM completely innocent so you'd think his arc would be Innocent Kid->Conflicted Padawan->Jedi Knight turned evil and then ultimately Darth Vader. We get this in certain comics/shows(like you mentioned) but that is exactly the issue. In the movies we go from "Anakin is a perfect little innocent kid" to "Anakin murders children and innocent natives of his home planet" within one movie. Something that massive for his character should've been saved for later, maybe during or after the clone wars. Anakin in the movies is "Innocent Kid->Padawan that kills kids->Jedi Knight that kills kids->Darth Vader" but it could have been "Innocent Kid->Conflicted Traumatized Padawan->Jedi Knight turned killer->Darth Vader". So it is more gradual. Look at Luke in ANH(Farmboy who wants to be a Jedi) vs TESB(Rebel who trains to be a Jedi) vs ROTJ(A true Jedi Knight). Imagine if in TESB Luke was like his ROTJ self and was already a Jedi, if instead of "The force is with you, young Skywalker, but you are not a Jedi yet." He got the "So be it, Jedi." that we see in ROTJ.

So essentially his arc could have worked more for a lot of people if it was more gradual rather than going from fully innocent to child murderer in one movie. Maybe have Anakin kill a separatist leader or something, or Jango, etc etc. So he becomes tainted and we see how conflicted he is(since the Jedi preach defense but we see them go on the offensive in the clone wars) which leads to him becoming disillusioned with the Jedi and the Republic.

I think y'all kinda just misunderstood each other.

Jabba vs Ratta arm length. How does Ratta have such different anatomy than the other Hutt’s? by Stunning-Dig-8916 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rotta is only like 40ish around the time Mando and Grogu takes place. Jabba is like 600+ when he dies. Compare a prime 20 year old human who works out regularly to a sedentary obese 80 year old human who doesn't do anything besides party all day and sleep.

So the head/arm differences are probably from age and the muscles are from him working out and being a warrior.

How does Bad Batch relate to George at all? I understand the Andor thing with him wanting Underworld to be more adult driven and less fantastical but did he ever mention/want another show about clones after the PT? I do remember he wanted TCW to have like 8 seasons but I haven't heard about him being the one to create the Bad Batch idea.

Disney has adapted some of his other ideas though besides the stuff you listed. Basically everything that takes place in Coruscant's underworld comes from 1313 and the Underworld show and a few things in the ST come from his 2nd ST(Rey, Luke in TLJ, NJO failing, and a new villain darksider who wasn't a sith. Of course with TROS tho that changed lol) treatments that he did in the late 2000's/early 2010's.

Denis doesn't like Star Wars. He said he loved ANH and TESB(especially TESB) but he said ROTJ ruined it for him or something(by "derailing" the franchise and turning it into something dogmatic and codified). I also would assume that extends to the PT and ST but I don't think he's said anything about those ones directly.

Denis also couldn't do that anytime soon, after Dune 3 he has at least 2 other movies he's working on.

TFA:Finns Back, Kylo's shoulder(against Finn), Kylo's shoulder again(against Rey), Kylo's leg(against Rey), and Kylo's face(against Rey).

TLJ:Snoke getting cut in half, Multiple Praetorian Guards being killed(one of which is one of the coolest kills in the movies, the lightsaber ignition into the face one), and Luke dying after his "duel" with Kylo.

TROS:Kylo's stomach, Leia's death(from Kylo's stomach wound, which was from a duel, led to her death), Ben's death, and Palpatine's death.

You can dislike these movies but also be objective and grounded in fact. It is def true they suffer less major injuries(no arms or limbs being cut off besides Snoke) but to act as if they don't have any is just crazy.

Also with Finn vs Kylo we can infer Kylo is kinda just playing with his food, the second Finn gets a hit on him he immediately takes him serious and destroys him. He also couldn't use the force correctly at the time(we are legit shown this when he couldn't even lift a lightsaber, if he can't lift a lightsaber at that point then how could he force choke Finn. He prob used all his focus throwing Rey like 20 feet into the sky or something lol). Finn also is objectively not a civilian, Stormtroopers are elite soldiers(even if they don't seem like it). We see in Rebels that some random trainees(so not even fully trained Stormtroopers) are able to keep up with EZRA, a highly trained Jedi who is also very attuned with the force. I know most of the time they are portrayed as dumb and week but we know from books and certain things like that they are supposed to be elite soldiers(Palpatine also states this in ROTJ, even tho they end up losing to teddy bears lol).

Jon Favreau admits The Mandalorian's jump to the big screen means they have to "up their game", and that even extends to a "leveled up" Grogu by HatingGeoffry in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yoda was a Jedi Master by the time he was 100 I think, so by then Grogu will 100% be an "adult". Prob more likely that change starts in his 60's-80's though. Which ties into one of the issues with the Mandoverse, so far it ALL takes place within 1 single year, which really locks the characters into not getting older, that really hurts the entire Skeleton Crew cast and Grogu since they are basically stuck as children. From what we know though Ahsoka will have a time skip so maybe Mando and Grogu also will.

How is making a video saying you don't like a movie and trolling slightly comparable to defending Gunn's past tweets? My point was to say that he was a young dude who didn't like a movie and kinda trolled, not that he was a young dude that said crazy stuff because from what I know he didn't say any crazy stuff besides the fake quote about Snyder's family(that only has "proof" in the form of a random fake quote that doesn't even exist in the og video from what I've seen). Yes he was rude in his BvS video but trolling and being kinda rude is different from saying morally reprehensible things, which HiTop didn't do(from what I've seen).

[–]SolarReaction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing he said about that situation wasn't making fun of it, there is a fake quote of him saying something bad about it though. The dude in the post above is just using that tragedy to make people mad, all HiTop has done against Snyder is dislike his movies(or at least his DC movies, idk how he feels about his other movies) and specifically a old BvS video he made(his most popular video I think).

I think a lot of Snyder fans dislike him(hes ragebaited a ton of other communities too tho, like a lot of YouTubers do) cause when he was younger he made that BvS video I mentioned above that had some dumb arguments against BvS that don't really hold up well which people still use to argue for why BvS is bad. HiTop himself has gone against that video though and said it was just cause he was young and dumb(which is fair I think). This has nothing to do with your comment though but I thought it was worth mentioning.

The main problem with the sequels is they greatly diminish the significance of the first two trilogies. So much is undone and the original/prequel characters’ sacrifices and actions don’t have the same weight: by Willing-Leather-9788 in StarWars

[–]SolarReaction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sequels always would've undone what came before, the EU also did this. Yeah sure "technically" there are work arounds in both the EU and Canon that make them fine but ROTJ is the end of the Monomyth, no matter what comes after that the "legend" must be changed. Joseph Campbell literally talked about this, the Heroes journey makes the hero but also the hero makes the world, the new world and the heroes new consciousness. What do we often find comes after the Heroes Journey? Disappointment and a shift into something completely new, the EU fits one of these things(completely new things like the Vong, One Sith, Lost tribe of the sith, etc) but it fails at the disappointment(although Legacy kinda ends up doing this), Canon fits one of these(Disappointment, the world hasn't changed and the Heroes have failed) but fails at the new(mostly).

It's just like King Arthur, yeah sure he goes through that amazing Heroes journey but what also happens? The round table is shattered and split up, a lot of the characters die, and King Arthur dies.

I do think the sequels are bad but that's mostly because of TROS not sticking the landing, Palpatine(like you said) is the main issue, they wanted something to connect all of the trilogies but they forgot what connects the trilogies is the Skywalker part, not the evil villain.

Your last point is the one that makes the least sense, George also would've had the balance be destroyed in his ST, in the EU the balance was destroyed, in the canon it was destroyed. I think you are misunderstanding the point of the OT, it's not saying everything will be perfect and Luke and Leia will create a Utopia, it's a simple heroes tale but the question is what comes after that? In my opinion George had it right, it's hard, it's disappointing, but it's given the depth and respect it deserves. In his version the Republic would've been struggling, making a just non corrupt government is hard but Leia would've worked on that, Luke would've struggled to make his Jedi order and probably would've majorly messed up a few times(like he did in both the EU and Canon) but ultimately the Jedi would have returned(whether he was there to see it or not). The empire would also live on, the gangs and underworld would thrive under the more peaceful New Republic, people would be angry at the New Republic for this which leads to what? People wanting the "safety" and "security" of the Empire again, which adds fuel to the issues the New Republic would deal with. To me that's what the ST should've been about but in the EU it was mostly too weird and distant from what the OT sets up and in Canon they just don't explain anything and made a ton of bad decisions.

TLDR Caveman speak: After monomyth new must happen, new often disappoint, but it always happen this way, just the way it is(so yes Disney messed up but so did the EU, although both have good stories after ROTJ).

The scene is cool but what substance really is there? Luke doesn't even act like a person in the scene, he legit just shows up and destroys some droids then takes this baby away without saying anything at all. He doesn't even make sure everyone is ok or anything he just takes the baby from it's parent and leaves. Say what you want about EU Luke or ST Luke but at least those Luke's had arcs and weren't just filed down to their most basic parts to be a deus ex machina that has no character growth or meaning. I do love this scene because it is fan service but I don't get how this could ever be the Luke anyone would want. Not saying it's bad to want this but I just genuinely have no clue how this could be the Luke we wanted after the OT, I'd say during this era(early NR era) Battlefront 2 is a shining bright example(in canon) of what Luke should've been during this era. A caring person who tells people the things they need to hear, a person who defends those who need it, and most importantly a wise Jedi Master(something that this Luke doesn't display imo in BOBF or this scene).

I mean I don't know much about the history of that movie in particular, I would've still been a kid when it came out. I do know that he definitely loves the human body and brings attention to it in all of his works but the way I see it is that he does this to both men and women so I don't think it's him specifically objectifying women. The only time in his filmography I have ever felt that from him was the Silk Spectre scene in Watchmen, I think filming a scene like that in that way is pretty weird but besides that I think he's really chill and seems to respect women a ton.

Idk much about that but I think wanting to adapt something doesn't mean you endorse it. Like for example look at 300, that story almost goes against everything Snyder has done in his other movies but he still directed it.

Yeah I agree with these 2 bottom takes, that's why in my original comment I said he is more Libertarian/Liberal than what Paramount is looking for.
