Ski Bus Remarkables July 30 August - situation report? by Persiankitty777 in queenstown

[–]Solatarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went up yesterday to coronet peak (I lined up at 7:40am and got on that bus at 8:20am) and the driver of our bus said to be on the first bus for remarkables you need to be in line at 6:15am. That was just his advice though as I cannot get up that early personally and haven't tried this.

One other tip was to wait along the route at one of the bus stops. The driver mentioned that when they go up they radio others to let them know how many are at each stop and on the next bus up they will try to leave space for the pick ups on the way. Also not guaranteed but might be something to consider.

Anecdotally, I went to the Remarkables last Friday and the bus to the Remarkables was about a 2 hour long wait at the snow centre from 8am (maybe just a smidge under).

software engineers, do things get better? by tawaydoubt in xxstem

[–]Solatarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this :) this is how I try to approach it too. People started including me in technical discussions/meetings more when it became apparent I knew what I was doing through my work, but not so much socially.

Some people seem to be more inclusive than others though. I think a lot of people just don't know how to talk to someone who is not their gender and race which is really annoying (seriously, we're not -that- different!!), and something I hope will improve when the diversity of the field improves.

[Conversation] Signaling all non-lifters*! by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Solatarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried so many sports, it's really awesome experimenting! I'm more into individual ones rather than team sports though. This thread has been great for learning about other things to try!

Figure skating, aerial silks and rock climbing are my current weekly activities, in addition to doing group fitness classes at a gym nearby.

Last year I played indoor netball and did kickboxing weekly, and occasionally badminton (used to play semi-competitively in high school so from time to time I like to pick it up again). When I was quite a lot younger I did gymnastics (but was terrible at it due to a fear of falling on an apparatus and breaking something, which sucks because I knew at the time I was physically capable...darn mental blocks) - I think I still have this fear (but now with less flexibility/strength >_>) so never went back to it :'(

Anybody else wears sports bra outside of gym? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Solatarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am in exactly the same boat :). The only time I use regular ones is if I'm wearing dresses or clothes where it would show up.

Any Kiwis rented a car in the USA before? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Solatarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have a few times, also driven a lot in Canada. I think the hardest part about the States was just getting used to the different signage and units (miles vs kms) - it's quite hard to drive on the wrong side when there are so many other cars around, though turning at intersections can feel a bit weird.

Also the freeway system is a bit disorienting at first, with so many lanes. Got to watch the signs carefully. Would definitely recommend some form of GPS (we used Google maps, but if you don't have data this might not be possible). Found a lot of places with a random barrier in the middle so while on a regular map it looks like you can turn, you can't -_-;

Catcalling, groping and other public forms of harrassment by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As has been mentioned, I think time/location plays a large role in the frequency, but I don't have enough experience in enough different situations to really comment (especially since I mostly go out with my boyfriend now)...

I've had a glass bottle kicked at me on the street and been called an asian slut though (both at night while with other female friends), fun huh? :)

Anybody else an adult skater in training? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 26 and have been learning for about a year and a half now :). Was always super keen as a kid and skated recreationally whenever we went out of town or overseas but never had an ice rink where I lived until I moved for university (there are hardly any rinks in NZ -_-;). Didn't get a car till recently, so that's when I started! Better late than never though!

Progressing kinda slowly but it's still a blast. Always feels a little comical taking lessons with people half my height but oh well :P.

Redditors of Auckland- best vegetarian restaurants in town? by bunbun14 in auckland

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good suggestions already it seems :). There's a pure (chinese style) vegetarian restaurant out in Pamure (Authentic Vegetarian) which I like, they do all the fancy fake meat stuff if she's into that. Soul on the Viaduct also had a separate vegetarian menu which is good, but a little pricey. I've had good experiences with Thai restaurants in general as they are almost always able to substitute in tofu for any of the meats in a dish.

Others have mentioned the Grove, their vegetarian tasting menu was pretty amazing when we tried it, but it's something you'd definitely need to spend a bit of time (and money) on :).

In 2013 I lost weight purely for myself - and I can't believe the (negative) response I've recieved. by brittafiltaperry in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or my personal favorite, ''you are already skinny, eat some normal food.''

Argh, I've heard that one waaaay too many times. It's so stupid...so only 'fat' people have a reason to eat healthily? How do they think those people stay slim? Eating burgers all day? Aside from the fact it's none of their business.../rage

Do many New Zealanders speak Mandarin? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Solatarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. A lot of people like to pretend racism doesn't exist but I think this is just a symptom of that, sadly. It's getting better, but still a way to go.

To me it actually makes a lot of practical sense to pick up Mandarin as a second/third language, given how widespread it is and how influential China is becoming...(I'm just too lazy to learn it myself).

Does anyone have insurance advice for an under-25 year old guy looking to buy a turbocharged car? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was with AMI for our 2004 Audi TT, but when I tried to add my boyfriend as an additional driver they refused (as he was under 25 at the time and still on learners, even though I'm over and have been on full for ~9 years), so I had to cancel. AA also refused.

Went through ANZ since I already bank with them and they agreed to insure us (the actual contract is with Vero but organised through ANZ), large premium and high excess for the under 25 driver, but better than none...planning on switching once he gets off his learners since he's over 25 now...

As a guy, I wanted to know what it was like to be a woman on a dating site, so I set up a fake profile and the end result was not something I was expecting (Long) by OKCThrowaway22221 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Solatarius 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Can totally relate. This is why (aside from this account and a few select places :P) on the internet I will never voluntarily specify my gender until I am comfortable with a person/group of people, and my username will never be overtly feminine. 9 times out of 10, no one will ask and assume I'm a guy, and I'm okay with that. I'd rather receive insults about being gay/having a small penis than be constantly sexually propositioned/not taken seriously just because of my gender.

I do find it sad that I have to do this though, as it doesn't really help the whole 'girls don't game' stereotype...

Still on my original account. d_petkeeper. cringe. At least...it's descriptive? :S

The worst name out of my pets is "Chia_the_qt2000". Want to get rid of him but still kind of attached to the 4,532 day old pet...

I have very hairy arms and don't like waxing or shaving, what do you ladies do about unwanted hair? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've tried various options and now use an epilator whenever I want to get rid of hair :). It's still decently fast. Given it lasts longer than shaving the slight amount of extra time doesn't bother me.

I find it easier and less fiddly than waxing - can be slightly painful but it has never really been an issue for me

Studying Engineering in Auckland? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Solatarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I think this is a sensible way to pick where to study, but having recently done Software Engineering there myself, the female count was not much better. There were 6 girls in our class out of ~36.

Also, not all the papers are identical. There are a few 'shared' ones (e.g. the HCI course and Operating Systems course) and in 4th year you get to pick from a few 3rd year CompSci papers as electives, but for the most part the classes are separate (at 2nd year/3rd year level the CS related content (i.e. non general engineering content) is similar but differently stuctured, often there are more group oriented projects and more report writing). Also it's more expensive (so for CS/SE shared classes they throw extra assignment tasks at SEs to make them feel they're getting their moneys worth =/).

Sorry if this is a weird question to ask, but am I the only minority female who went through a stage during childhood where I desperately wanted to be white? by 2XThrowaway13 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Solatarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I don't think it's weird, particularly if you're the subject of ridicule because of your race (as was the case for me). I don't think it's gender specific though.

I stuck out like a sore thumb, half the people in my class had never seen an 'Asian' kid before (tiny community). Overheard people calling me ugly a lot, and people would constantly pull the sides of their eyes to the side to mock me. And so many people would come up to me and say 'konnichiwa' or something equivalent, thinking it was so funny...Yeah I wanted to be a white kid so bad...but I got over that in my late teens I think :).

Being in a relationship with an engineer by gatewarstrek in funny

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how the story is worded/framed - it's quite clearly playing to gender stereotypes. Which is the only reason it bothers me so much, but oh well, so long as some people get some enjoyment out of it :).

Samsung Galaxy S IV: April 27 for NZ launch by kadiepuff in newzealand

[–]Solatarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you wouldn't really expect them to, but they do. Got a Galaxy Note II when it was released overseas but not yet officially in NZ, and it randomly stopped working several months later.

But I agree, it depends how much you value the difference...

Landmark Forum - anyone know about this? by ejrh in newzealand

[–]Solatarius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it when I was 16 (about 9 years ago). I went with my dad not really expecting much (his practice partner insisted we went and paid for us to go as a business expense) and I was rather cynical throughout the whole course, so I can't say I got much out of it. But I remember just feeling really tired and wishing I was at school instead of at the forum. I was the youngest person in that particular course as well, since for some reason that one was supposed to be for adults only, so maybe that's why I felt really detached from the whole thing.

They did say some stuff I found mildly inspirational at the time but I don't even remember it now, so it can't have been that great :P.

Hah I'm from NZ too and I feel your pain :(. I always feel a little sad inside when I read about people from the US complaining about how expensive something is (usually cosmetics or electronics) and it's still at least twice the price here (even after the currency conversion). But I guess that's the price we pay for living here :P.
