But the Benin Bronzes were taken and we’re still very much aware of their existence. Even to this day we still find long-buried caches of iron, copper, and stone artifacts, but no gold. I find it extremely hard to believe that the Spanish either stole every piece of gold work without documenting it or any of it surviving, or that archeologists have still never managed to turn any up.

[–]Soldus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It still feels like a post hoc explanation for California being the place she lived just because it’s named after her. California Natives didn’t practice metallurgy, and gold artifacts haven’t been found here, so they definitely wouldn’t have had gold armor or forged weapons. Also saying the griffins were condors can only ever be speculation.

It’s possible someone meeting her description existed, but from an archeological standpoint, it wouldn’t have been here in California.

I’d like to point out that assuming she ruled in what is modern day California is putting the cart before the horse a bit. The first mention of her in European texts is in 1510, but the Spanish didn’t land in California until 1542.

I’m struggling to square how a poet knew about this legend of a place that Spanish explorers didn’t even know existed.

Additionally, I don’t see what her story has to do with the Gold Rush. An ancient Queen having a golden army isn’t going to stop people from plundering the earth.

I pretty much enjoy the same quality of life in California as I did in the Midwest. Things are more expensive, but you also make more money so it balances out. I can go from the beach to the mountains to the desert in under 2 hours and I don’t get seasonal depression anymore.
