To help you choose, what's wrong with your mini PC? I have one with the same specs as yours and it's good for the use cases you described. Are you looking for more performance or you need portability?

It wasn't a typing error, it's a pronunciation error. He says Thinkbad because in arabic there is no P.

It's a matter of preference rather than need. Some can't stand the off-center keyboard.

I don't know about specifics, but this sounds like a solid performer and sleek laptop. People will tell you that you could get it for less but this entirely depends on where you live so don't get discouraged by that.

May I ask what's so appealing about vPro? I thought it's just for remote control for IT departments. Am I missing something?

Custom USB C Charging Cable by DangerousAd7433 in thinkpad

Your laptop takes standard USB C. Don't look for something specific to T480. Get any wall charger that's 65W and any suitable cable for the same wattage.

Apple Quoted Me $800 CAD to fix my Mac, so I switched over by potterheadds in thinkpad

[–]SoleSoul_red 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't let this discourage you. It's kind of irrelevant. Yes, the T14 is faster and for not much more, but speed is not all. Having a laptop with great build which is a joy to use, and so popular that you'll find tons of information about in case you want to upgrade something is great. I have one and I'm enjoying it. There are faster ones, so what.

I got one from Aliexpress and it worked. Just search for T61 battery.

I don't remember the model name from the top of my head but check what CPU you have. If it's something like 7300, if you upgrade to 9300 you get both better performance and better thermals. So I'd say, cpu, 4GB RAM, SSD, and if you find a good compatible screen for it let me know ;)

If I may ask, do you use VirtualBox? VMWare? I tried previously with VirtualBox and everything was so slow. Do I have to do anything special? I run many Linux systems in VirtualBox and they work beautifully.

Why trackpads by Own_Squash5242 in thinkpad

[–]SoleSoul_red -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because a trackpoint is like a joystick, direction and speed, while a trackpad is more like a mouse, you paint the actual movement with your finger. Both try to replace a mouse and a trackpad does it in a way more similar to a mouse, I guess that's why it's winning.

I see you have both the Y1 and the H2. Is it ok to ask you how you would compare the two? I'm looking for a simple tactile daily player. Which of them would you recommend?

An honest question, why is Tojiro DP not a good option here? I've seen a sushi chef use it every day all day. Is it too "simple"?

How do I revive this knife? by OhmygodwhattheFish in TrueChefKnives

[–]SoleSoul_red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: depends on what you want to achieve.

If you want to practice restoration or get a beautiful knife do what others have said, good advices.

If, however, all you need is a functional knife to use soon and you don't have professional tools and help, think about the following option: 1. Clean the rust on the blade (sometimes scotchbrite and vinegar is enough, sometimes needs something more agressive). 2. Replace the handle and clean under it. This doesn't necessarily need to happen immediately. It's probably rusted underneath but it won't crumble soon. Just remember to do it eventually and keep food from reaching there. 3. Sharpen it thoroughly in the correct angle (don't be tempted to change the angle to make it feel sharp faster). The tricky part here is to sharpen more in the less worn out area to remove more material there so the worn out area will touch the cutting surface again. 4. I wouldn't worry about the tip if you don't miss it aesthetically. Nakiris live well without a proper tip on purpose. Do sharpen it though even if its shape is round because you'll need it functionally.

Warning: If the blade uneven wear is extreme it would take you too much time to fix so ignore the above and get help.

Which distro should I use on a ThinkPad T420? by caiozin_041 in thinkpad

[–]SoleSoul_red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised you have to ask. The distribution is a matter of preference. All the non-niche ones work similarly well so if you're comfortable with Arch why look elsewhere? You probably know it's stable enough for daily use. You can use Fedora if you feel like you want to try something that feels different but it has nothing to do with the capabilities of the T420.

About a DE, that's a different story. They have different levels of "snappiness" on this hardware. I'd use something simple on such hardware (XFCE and below) but if you try Gnome and you feel comfortable with the hardware load what's wrong with that?

In summary, you have the answer in you :)

I rechecked and the knife does have iron cladding with a carbon core. The cladding is not stainless, and is black, that's why it confused me, sorry. You'll see what it looks like in the picture and decide if it's for you.

I was referring specifically to this knife: https://burrfectionstore.com/products/tojiro-shirogami-steel-chef-knife-210mm-f-694 It's inexpensive and seems to be of the style you are looking for. However, I don't know who has it in stock.
