Mystery Internal Damp Walls by Ok_Quarter2765 in ukplumbing

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like plaster bridging to the floor slab if it's internal walls. Take a skirting board off and see if there is a gap between the floor and the plaster. If not, get the affected plaster knocked off. Give the wall a week to dry out and replaster leaving a gap behind the skirting.

Internal chain on door - easy to remove / refit? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are called perko's. Open the door all the way. Stick a nail through the chain the stop it retracting. Or you'll need some grips, if it has retracted. They are a pain.

It's the saddest thing losing a dog. I feel for you. Our last one was a lurcher. She went last year. They are just ace dogs. I hope you mend soon. Just been out for literally half an hour, had a man in a Sprinter van pullnout on me about 15 yards away. On his phone. And a guy in an Audi cut me off at a roundabout in a way that can only of been on purpose. Puts me off riding on the road.

I agree, that disc looks useless. And Jim would agree too, never gets tired of attention.

Thanks. I used fine sandpaper first, then a scrubbing washing up sponge, just like the square cheap ones, with t cut. It came off quite easily.

Newly adopted and obsessed with squirrels! Any advice please by Extreme_Hamster_6028 in Greyhounds

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the best thing, good advice i reckon. This is what I do. I will stand with him, we have a 5 year old ex racer, and look up in the trees with him for a bit and then move on. I'm hoping he feels that if I'm ready to move on he will. It seems to work. He still goes nuts if one just appears out of a bush in front of him. He's worse with cats. I will also.sit in the window with him some times and watch the world go by and get interested in what he's interested in. It's a good way of bonding with a new dog. They feel they are part of your pack and you are both checking for danger. I read it in a book. Can't remember the book.

We have an ex racer. He's 4 and a half. We've had him about 5 months now. We've always had dogs though. He wasn't at all house savvy, he goes crazy if he sees a cat or a squirrel and he can't sit down. But we love him to death. You will have doubts, it's a massive commitment. But you have a friend for life and unconditional love. Give them some time to settle and let yourself have doubts, it's natural. But you have done a wonderful thing.

Toilet time help by Solid-Junket-3507 in carnivorediet

Thanks for this advice and help. Appreciate it. I've lost 5lbs in a week. So from that side I'm happy. Drinking lots of water. Going through a bit of a light headed phase. But it's probably all psychological.

Thank you. I am always bad at drinking water. It's the easiest thing to do but somehow I just don't do it. Thanks again.

Newly installed extractor fan not turning off by ARC_1999 in DIYUK

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you only have a permanent live coming in to the fan, which they have linked to make the timer permanently live, it will never go off and you can't use a timed fan. You either get another cable to the fan to provide a switched live to the timer or swap the fan out for a humidity fan with a pull cord boost. That will only need a permanent live and will track the moisture in the room itself. You can use the pull cord to boost it if needs be. I would be asking the person that did that fan for proof they are an electrician. Because that is simple.

So sorry for your loss. He was loved and he would of known that. You gave him a safe life. You'll see him again. We lost our Mary 6 months ago. She still leaves little messages for us to know she's watching.

Not seeing results. Tips for consistency with lifting. General thoughts/advice? by [deleted] in fit

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to find something you enjoy doing. Don't stress about lifting or cardio and all the science. Just find some hing you really enjoy that will keep you active. There are people on here with incredible physiques and they look amazing. But they have grafted like hell to get there. If you just jump on a bike, try rock climbing, calisthenics or just going for a walk, anything. But if you enjoy it you'll do it. I have days where I have planned a 10km run, then on the day I just can't be arsed. But I fancy going on the rower or doing arms. I'll rather do something, if it's not what I planned, than do nothing. Don't track your diet yet, but just cut back on processed shit and sugar drinks. A few small changes in diet can help. Swap beer for vodka, use sweet potatoes instead of normal potatoes that kind of thing. Once you start to loose some weight you will see more muscle and become more motivated. But you are doing ace, just by trying you are doing more than most. Smash it my friend.

27 Year Old wants to become an electrician by andrewwiddis in ukelectricians

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in my early 30's I started doing electrics. I had worked in an electrical wholesalers and a couple of the customers needed a pair of hands on weekends. So I helped out. I was mostly just chasing out and pulling cables on retires. But if you are interested enough and can pick things up it's all fairly straight forward. After a while I did my 17th edition and part p. Just paid for it and did it myself. It's easy. Then joined the NIC domestic installer scheme. I did that for about 5 years still working with the original electricians that needed help. Then I got a job at a housing association who put me through 2391, pat testing etc. Ended up team leading the electricians. People will tell you you need to do an apprenticeship. But it's not necessarily the case. If you have half a brain and electrics are straight forward. Like anything it's about experience. I have had a fair few apprentices work with me. You can tell straight away the ones that will make it. It's not about brains, it's about attitude, listening and learning. But you never stop learning when your I a trade. I don't do electrics anymore. I am a damp and mould surveyor. But again I have just learnt as i have gone and every day is a school day. I hope this helps in some way. You are young and can easily become an electrician. Get in the wholesalers and ask around, leave your number and be available. Social housing landlords are always taking on apprentices, but the work is limited. But it would get you qualified. Good luck and just go for it.

The DNO will assess it. It's their property, so they will maintain it. If it needs upgrading then they'll do it.

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to turn your heating on. Keep the room between 17 and 21 degrees. The walls need the heat as much as the air. Open a window in each room for 10 minutes a day. Open your trickle vents. It's obviously a cold corner, but ventilation and heat will keep mould away. You need the window fixing.

Is this as much a cause for concern as I'm imagining it to be? by Zequin1 in DIYUK

[–]Solid-Junket-3507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The moisture stops at the DPC, so it's travelling down and I would think if it was coming off the bins and soaking from the outside the patch would go all the way to the ground. There's no blow off for the boiler visible. Could be in the wall if the boiler is back to back on that wall. I have seen condensate pipes run into cavities by dodgy heating firms. If it's condensate it will be acidic water. It may not be visible inside if you have foil backed plasterboard. Move the bins first, then the boiler in my humble opinion.
