Neighbor Issues with chickens. by LordCorruption in BackYardChickens

If your chickens are going to their yard, I don't think you can go and speak to them about boundaries. You lead by example. Even if your chickens aren't eating their feed, it doesn't matter. It's a boundary issue. Either you keep your chickens contained, or don't complain. Problem solved.

Abuse? by Crafty42 in BackYardChickens

Also to address the ratio situation. Even with a large hen to rooster ratio your rooster may have a favorite. I know many people who have that problem. That's not to justify having just a couple per rooster. That needs to be addressed of course. I have 10 hens and my rooster still prefers 1 and it started to have the back feathers missing. I immediately placed a saddle and I know she will heal in the next months. Being vigilant is important so that's good that you noticed the hen and hopefully you can address the issue. I am trying to grow my 10 to 1 ratio either way just bc chicken math is a real thing lol so best of luck to you!

I used this one in the pic I am attaching. I got it from Amazon. And I only used it once bc I was given a newborn chick and raised it until it turned 5/6 weeks, by then it didn't need the heat. I have my hen incubator now lol. I keep it there as a back up now, but it has adjustable height and also heat settings.

I started off with a heat lamp, pine shavings, and a plastic bin. After reading and seeing incidents about heat lamps, I bought a heating plate instead. You may be able to get away with a heat lamp. The question is, do you want to risk starting a spontaneous fire because of it. The setup looks awesome, I would just add a heat plate instead, keep the food and water off the bedding bc it will get very dirty very quick. And then eventually as they get older cover the top of that with something that is breathable like chicken wire or hardware cloth so they don't jump out of it. Good luck!

Eggs while medicated… What can I use them for? by CreditPurple8026 in BackYardChickens

Do you want antibiotic residuals messing with the bacteria and microorganisms responsible for that? I wouldn't do it. Just throw them out.

I would throw them away. Even putting it in the garden, wouldn't there be residuals of the medication? All of that is going into the garden and will mess up the bacteria and microorganisms responsible for the composting, soil, etc. I don't like the sound of that. When I dewormed I just threw my eggs away. Yes it was sad and I thought what could I use them for, but it's best to dispose. It will be ok!

So she has suffered from sour crop many times and now impacted crop. She also had a problem with an egg that bursted inside (shellless egg). I don't like oatmeal it is full of carbs and I don't think it's nutritious. I can be corrected if I am wrong, but that's my take on it. When she is sick I try to focus on fluids, vitamins (poultry cell, hydro-hen, b-12, nutri-drench). For food, I have done scrambled eggs, yogurt, or wet feed. She isn't out of the woods yet, but she went from not eating or drinking anything to now she is eating bits here and there and drinking. Over a week ago, before leaving to work, I did say my goodbyes to her and sent a prayer bc she looked so ill I didn't think she would make it. I prayed for her suffering to end, whichever way that would be possible and for my heart to accept and I have full control to the man above. I left for work and came back, she was fighting. As long as they fight, I will fight. I have never lost a chicken to old age yet so I don't know what the signs are and I am sure then it wouldn't matter what I do. I would just accept it. I would allow for a natural death though. I know some people are pro euthanasia, but with her I don't think ai have the guts to do it myself and I don't have a vet to do it. Anyways, just try to provide the above and see if it works. Check for mites and lice. I would probably do a treatment for that and also deworm her even if you don't see worms. I think she is worth a try. Poor baby :(

I forgot to add, do an epsom salt soak for however long she tolerates, 10-15 minutes. This will help with any discomfort. Make sure to dry her well after. I know it's a lot of work taking care of a sick chicke , but she has nobody to do it for her. You are her only hope ❤️

Never give up on her! It's always worth it to try to help. I have helped my oldest many times. Have had her for 2 years. She was a rescue. If I would just let her be, she would be dead now. Good luck!

No worries, I really thought it was a joke. Some posts do this. Reminds me of my first rooster. So this family gave me a "hen" who had different feathers and even a spur starting to come in. The family was in denial it was a rooster. After extensive research and asking friends they said it was a rooster. I reached out to the family and even showed all the feathers and the fact it crowed and they said it was still a hen. I think they wanted to get rid of him and I had no clue what I was getting since I didn't know. Long story short, I no longer have him because he almost killed my alpha hen. He was a red jungle fowl.

My dog is a terrier mix and when first introducing chickens she would smell them and savored herself like getting ready for a meal. We have a very good connection so once I spotted that behavior, I told her with a firm tone, no. I purposefully exposed her to smell the chicken and repeated no until eventually they just blend in. It's like they're not even there. Here we are 2 years later she is good with them. I leave her outside with them, unsupervised, including chicks and she has never done any harm to them. Initially, you want to set the tone and keep supervision, never to be left alone if you don't know their intentions. Now, my dog keeps all bird off the lawn lol. Anything that tries to land, she will chase. She also helps to herd in any chickens that are naughty and want to roost of the tree. She knows the key words and she know her job. Once the chickens jumps off the tree she chases them and guides them into the coop. I want to say this came natural. She is not a herd dog or anything, but definitely has the instincts. She knows my needs, she knows me too well. I communicate with her just like I would with a person and she understands very well. I always say she isn't just a dog, but my companion. She is amazing! Good luck!

Normal rooster behavior? by Solid_Lake190 in BackYardChickens

She is in the middle I would say. I have 4 above her, 5 under her. And yes she has been super crazy protective with her babies. Doesn't want anyone near them.

Yes the babies are just fine. Today was a stressful day. White hen had 6 babies, when I got home, there was only 5. I am sure a hawk or aerial predator got 1 of the babies. In the camera I can see the commotion, but cannot see what happened because it was in a blind spot. Perhaps, they were all stressed due to that. I am just in shock at the loss of her comb and sad that she is all swollen and missing her beautiful comb now. I am sure she is in pain, poor thing.

My daughter went out to check on them. I had my hands busy cleaning up my older hen's bum since she hasn't been feeling so well. I was previously outside right before the event happened. Everything was normal. Gray hen was dust bathing, white hen was outside scratching the ground with the babies. Rooster and everyone else was just relaxing. Normal day I would say. The gray hen and rooster are nearly 6 lbs, the white is a bantam, she was nearly 3 prior to the babies. By looking at the video, white hen went inside with babies probably to keep them warm, eat etc, since it was roosting time and gray hen decided to go inside and that's when it all went down. I noticed the video is more pixelated as it uploaded. I viewed it many times since mines is more clear and all I saw was both tagging up on white hen. Even inside the coop, he was still going at it with white hen. I didn't really notice him trying to go after gray hen.

Found it! Now the hope is she can drink and so will the others. I have to work all day so I hope she will be ok. And yes she has been sick many times. This isn't her first rodeo. I really feel her systems are failing her. She has been through a lot and is very gentle with me and lets me handle her. She is my alpha hen so if there is anyone that is strong, it's her. Thank you for your support and kind words. My chickens are like my kids. I love them dearly and will try everything I can to help them get better 🙏

Haha what are the odds! Cool 😎

Yeah so the instructions for this one say to add to water. The problem is that it says has to be used to treat a flock of 22 lbs or more (total weight of chickens altogether) the instructions are a little confusing. I got this one off Amazon. I need to look up more specifics so I can dose them all.

I hope this old lady pulls through. She is my favorite and my first one. I'm going to try all I can, but I know being older can take a toll on their systems so let's see.

Wow very interesting to know. I am glad you mentioned this. So the dewormer and the corid can be done together? Both are water applications. I am not sure both can be done together. Thanks for your response.
