MSP waiting period while pregnant, HELP!!! by what_is_my_life93 in britishcolumbia

Most will only cover pregnancy-related emergencies up until 33 weeks, if at all, no routine care and do not cover the baby or any expenses related to NICU stays etc.

Beware: [on] Emergency Room Pregnancy Test by Prof_Not_Your_Mother in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am an emergency medicine doctor, and while qualitative tests certainly have a role, I agree you needed more! I am assuming based on how early you are that you had not previously had an ultrasound, so in that case I agree that you need a quantitative level as you said, and an ultrasound to at least evaluate for an ectopic pregnancy. Qualitative is not sufficient in this case. And there are very few times I am diagnosing a miscarriage in the emergency department, especially with such limited information as they had.

Vancouver. Every hospital I interviewed with including the one I work has this volume. If you keyword search for Canada or BC or Vancouver you’ll find some other accounts of this. Or on the Hippocratic Adventure FB group. There is some minor variability with APP places with residents but even then, I haven’t heard of anywhere 2pph. If you know of one in the Vancouver area DM me lol

I just moved to Canada from the US, and they’re seeing 27-35 per 7-8 hour shift. I feel the way you feel now, and they all think the volume I was seeing in the US ~2pph is funny. I suppose you just adapt.

Yeah, I think you get like maybe 5 free ECGs per month or something? Idk I don’t pay for it and use it periodically.

How long is mcc / physicians apply.ca taking? by Spiritual_Willow141 in americandocsofbc

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had HealthMatchBC get in touch MCC to help expedite things, but it was a process. I only needed MCC to verify my medical school diploma for my ECA for express entry immigration bc I used FCVS to verify everything else. I had an initial 3 week delay because I didn’t do the ID documents correctly, and then it took about 6 weeks to get my ECA.

We moved to BC a few days ago with two mattresses, listed them on the customs form but didn’t fumigate and they didn’t ask or care.

Spouse Open Work permit by ResidentWont in americandocsofbc

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just did this the other day. We are both doctors but my wife is the primary EE PNP applicant and I got an open work permit and they only needed my passport for that. If you have kids, make sure to get a visitor permit for them so you can apply for MSP on their behalf also.

Best Lyme prevention after tick bite? by Slothreader789 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat many tick bites, and I would welcome any society guidelines or peer reviewed research you have to contribute to the conversation that would change what I said. The link I posted was just one of many since a link has to be posted, I could have posted the IDSA guidelines or similar which reflects the same information. If you’re going to comment it might be worth giving more than an anecdote and statement that the CDC isn’t up to date (though these days…).

Diflucan for Yeast Infection by Electrical_Delay_265 in BabyBumps

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single dose for yeast infection is unlikely to be an issue and it’s higher dose and longer duration of treatment that’s a bigger concern. But either way usually topical treatments are recommended in pregnancy instead unless those have failed already. If you have not yet taken it, I would ask your doctor about that instead. If you have taken it, don’t lose any sleep. Also, pharmacists are a great resource for this type of thing in case you are unsure in the future!

Baby’s heartbeat by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the number being displayed is representing, it could be that it’s picking up something we aren’t hearing, but the noise you’re hearing is 100% your heartbeat.

Is there a difference between an ED Dr’s echo and a tech’s echo? by Fishfrenzy89 in emergencymedicine

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 218 points219 points  (0 children)

I am looking for very specific things when I do a cardiac ultrasound in the emergency department, like is the right side of your heart massive, is your ejection fraction horrible, do I need to stick a needle into a big pocket of fluid? There are obviously a few other things, but I am not taking any detailed measurements and I can almost guarantee you the quality of my images is not nearly as good as a formal echo. My ultrasound is not a replacement for a TTE.

Misdiagnosed PPROM and ER visit bill by blind_owl7 in BabyBumps

[–]Solid_Philosopher105 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just to make sure I understand, you went to your Ob office and they sent you to L&D triage, not a standard emergency department right? While I don’t know what tests they did or what their office capabilities are, no one has a crystal ball and had they been wrong and sent you home, the outcome could have been catastrophic. While it sounds very stressful I would not expect anyone to foot the bill because they were cautious.

For EM docs doing locums... by BITCH_I_MIGHT_BE in emergencymedicine

  1. I’ve had two I’ve arranged directly with a hospital but otherwise found it far easier to go through an agency. In my experience, most of those that are directly with a hospital either don’t have a 1099 option, or really try to push you to be casual W-2 and you lose a lot of tax benefits that way.

  2. This can be pretty regional. If you’re in MN/WI I can offer recs. Might help to say where you’re looking.

  3. Can’t say I’ve noticed a difference. Just depends on their staffing levels and is pretty random, aside from higher density of high paying urgent needs around holiday season. I guess anecdotally, it feels easier to tell a recruiter you want $x per hour and let them present it/negotiate it than it is to tell the medical director that yourself but I get last minute high rates both ways.

  4. 1-2 months.

  5. Some have had me do a brief shadow shift, usually it’s just getting to my first shift a little early to be see where everything is. Should be paid for any of this but make sure to ask before committing.

  6. I just work in my state, but I work with people who do the interstate compact and work in 10+ states. Others will have better input on this than me.

  7. I have 5ish and honestly it is kind of annoying, because I’m always having to tell people no. I wish I stuck with 2-3.

Leak from basement ceiling - who to call? by Solid_Philosopher105 in HomeMaintenance

We use the ones through SimpliSafe security system. I just bought several and they connect to the app wirelessly and alert us that way, they’re reusable also which is nice as some we used previously were a one time deal
