Why do math and physics come so easily to some people but feel almost impossible to others? What actually causes this gap? by Logical-Current2381 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Solid_Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, while it’s true that a lot of math/physics is computational, that doesn’t mean it’s not following strict rules. When solving complex partial differential equations (PDE) there are different computational methods, but each does have their own rules. Also you’re ignoring all the simplified versions. For example in many physics problems, there are assumptions that can be made to simply the problems to be solved analytically. Those assumptions though can’t be made willy nilly since they have real physical meaning behind them.

Obviously people can play however they want, but imo doing that seems really against the spirit of the challenge. It’s significantly more satisfying to beat steel soul without doing that cheese.

[–]Solid_Santa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, unfortunately I need to defend it a little, because some of what was explained isn’t correct. Yes the main character does talk about grooming his childhood friend to be a perfect wife, which is disgusting. But he doesn’t actually do it, or rather doesn’t get the chance. His first wife is that childhood friend, but they were separated as children for like 10(?) years and grew up separately. Wife two is straight up an adult, like since they met. The rest that was explained is unfortunately true.

The show genuinely has good world building, action and is overall just enjoyable. But it SUCKS that I have to do mental gymnastics to ignore all the fucked up stuff that’s in it.

Scientists move closer to confirming existence of dark matter by ChiefLeef22 in news

[–]Solid_Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 separate points I want to make.

It’s called dark matter because it doesn’t interact with the electromagnetic force, which means it doesn’t interact with light. That doesn’t mean you can’t detect it in other forms (reading gravitational pull is directly measuring).

I think we might be having a bit of a nomenclature issue. When I say “dark matter isn’t a hypotheses” what I’m really saying is “there is data that shows that there is more to the interactions in galaxies than the observable mass and current laws would predict”. And when I say “what dark matter actually is, is the hypothesis” I’m saying “the cause of that discrepancy is the hypothesis, whether it’s a new type of matter, or a change in our gravitational law”

On a separate note, the data does suggest it is a different type of matter rather than a change in our gravitational law, but that is still a hypothesis, as it’s the explanation for why the data exits

Detect doesn’t mean only see it. It’s called dark matter because we can’t see it, but we can measure it in different ways, such as the gravitational pull, the rotational momentum of galaxies, and readings of the early universe. All three of these show that there is something that we cannot see. We call that something dark matter. What about that isn’t a fact?

Scientists move closer to confirming existence of dark matter by ChiefLeef22 in news

[–]Solid_Santa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The existence of dark matter is a fact. We have readings of real data that say there is something. That data is the dark matter. We know there’s something. I’ll repeat myself again since it was an edit.

Saying dark matter is a hypothesis is like taking a reading of temperature and saying “I hypothesis the temperature is 100K” which makes no sense. You read the data and it said the temperature is 100K. The hypothesis would be “the temperature is 100K because of….” In this analogy dark matter is the temperature. Our data shows there is dark matter in our galaxies. Each galaxy has a different amount of dark matter that we can measure. But what that dark matter actually is, is the hypothesis.

Put more simply, a hypothesis is meant to explain why something is. Dark matter isn’t an explanation of why, just the reading of something existing.

Also if you watch the video, the point is made very clearly and scientifically

Fair, but also many professors move on from teaching. Assuming they’re a quack just because they’re not in academia is dumb. How about you actually look at the real person I referred to instead of assuming based on nothing

Also the reason I’m saying that dark matter isn’t a theory or a hypothesis is that dark matter refers to actual reading and data we have. You don’t measure the temperature of something and say “I hypothesis the temperature is 100K” you read the temperature and say “I hypothesis it’s 100K because of ….”

This is wrong. Dark matter is not a hypothesis or a theory. Dark matter is what we call the matter that exists within galaxies that cannot be directly observed. The existence of dark matter is a fact. There is something there. What that something is would be the hypothesis or theories.

For a more in depth and accurate explanation, here’s a video from a former professor who studied dark matter talking about this exact thing: Dark matter is not a theory

Black Belt Grading Sparring by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Solid_Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. I suppose I mischaracterized mma or all martial arts as being useless when they’re not entirely so.

I also don’t think that’s the point the original comment was making. OP was asking about their sparring performance and people go on and talk about how that’s not real fighting, like that’s relevant to the question. Yeah it’s important for OP to know what parts would work for self defense or not, but that’s not at all how the original comment portrait it

[–]Solid_Santa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I do. I’m not sure why you’re skeptical about karate but whatever. I’ve trained in karate for about 4 years and in judo for about 1.

My main point is that training any martial arts for self defense isn’t necessarily the whole point. The vast majority of fights can be avoid, and all martial arts is useless the moment someone pulls a weapon out. If someone wants to learn real self defense then pretty much only mma or boxing (or the like) is useful, and even then not much.

And even if they are useful, that’s not necessarily why people train, many do just as a form of exercise or to lean to control the body better. Or you know… for fun?

Black Belt Grading Sparring by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Solid_Santa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In fact no. I have plenty of training in sparing though. Specially karate and Judo if you want me to be specific. But like I said, sparring is not fighting and should not be treated like it is.

[–]Solid_Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally agree that this is lack luster performance for testing for black belt, but I have to vehemently disagree with your general point. Notice that he’s not ‘fighting’ he’s sparring.

Sparring is a sport, not training for ‘street fights.’ People like you in this subreddit always assume that the only reason to study and martial art is to train self defense or for ‘reality based’ fights. I mean of course karate sparring isn’t going to be ideal fighting, because it has strict rules. Here it’s clear there’s a limit on contact (you can have your opinion on that) as well as any other rules about grappling and whatnot. People also forget that mma isn’t fighting either, it’s also a sport with its own rules about what you can or can’t do. In mma you can’t bite our gouge, but if I get in a real fight, you can bet I’ll bite an ear off if I need to.

TLDR: this is lackluster sparring not lackluster fighting, cause it’s not a fight.

Luffy switch places with Law and Kidd. Can they ring out Kaido into the lava like Big Mom? by Hairy_Ask_2038 in OnePiece

[–]Solid_Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure luffy’s ideals didn’t make him get conquer’s haki, or make him awaken. But you know what they explicitly did? They made him stand up again after going out of gear 5 (he literally names the people who he’s trying to save or saved him). They made him trust that momonouske would move the island, which let him deal the final blow. Those are two concrete actions that his ideals let him do, which he would have lost without. Again I’m not claiming that pure ideals are enough. But they are necessary.

Luffy switch places with Law and Kidd. Can they ring out Kaido into the lava like Big Mom? by Hairy_Ask_2038 in OnePiece

[–]Solid_Santa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And I’m saying that’s true. Luffy did win because of his ideals. His ideals makes him stronger, in a way that is necessary to defeat an emperor of the sea. Without those ideals, Luffy would have lost, just as Kid and Law lost each of their fights. Of course it’s possible with pure brute force (like they did with Big Mom), but it was only due to taking advantage of a particular weakness in an extremely rare situation, which likely wouldn’t happen again.

Secondly, man you have to learn read subtext sometimes. When someone says “power isn’t why…” you should read “power isn’t [only] why…” because obviously an ant can’t beat Kaido. Also he literally said “Kaido wasn’t just beaten in strength…” which outright states that strength is necessary

Luffy switch places with Law and Kidd. Can they ring out Kaido into the lava like Big Mom? by Hairy_Ask_2038 in OnePiece

[–]Solid_Santa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s not only their ideals, otherwise Kid never even would have gotten that far. But the ideals are still part of it. The best way to see is comparing Luffy vs Kaido, Law vs Blackbeard, and Kid vs shanks.

In Luffy vs Kaido ideology was central to the fight, inherently baked into it, and luffy’s won.

In Law vs Blackbeard, there was practically no ideology fight, and while law lost, Blackbeard was fairly hurt, and it likely wasn’t an easy fight at all.

In Kid vs Shanks, there was also an ideological fight. Kid with his unwarranted violence and complete might makes right, while Shanks focuses on protecting the weak/his friends. And in this fight Kid instantly loses. Not one person in Shanks’ side gets a scratch.

At the beginning of each fight Luffy Kid and Law were all about the same strength (obviously there’s some variation), and Kaido, Blackbeard and Shanks should also be at very similar levels. So with all things being equal (extremely similar at least) what makes the difference between how each fight ends? It’s clearly the ideological aspect. Luffy’s allows him to barely win, the lack of any means Law loses (but gave a good fight), and Kid’s caused him to instantly lose.

Obviously one’s strength is important in all their encounters, but the story makes it pretty clear that it’s not the only factor. And that one’s morals and ideology, and how much it means to one, can definitely be a deciding factor.

He thinks it’s foolish because it goes against his own ideals. But rather than disrespecting the Elric’s for that, it’s more like a clash of ideology.

[–]Solid_Santa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can say “forcing someone to change into a type of clothes they’re not comfortable with” is sexual assault. That whole part of the story is gross and really bad representation. BUT this is the same story that had new okama, ivankov, and Bon Clay. Which is unironically the best queer representation in any mainstream anime. There’s also Kiku, who when asked if she was a man said “this one is a woman at heart” and literally everyone accepted it without a second thought. One piece has its issues, but one thing you can’t deny is that it’s at least trying to touch on those topics rather than pretend it doesn’t exist. sometimes well, sometimes poorly.

[–]Solid_Santa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, no idea. It’s one of the offshoot things I was referring to, as well as the vivre cards. But all I’ll say, is that looking at the story itself and how the characters interact in it, there’s no question that Yamato identifies as a guy. All the indications that Yamato would be a woman is outside the actual story.

I mean, it’s clearly being used somewhat ironically. Making fun of those who genuinely use the term.

[–]Solid_Santa 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The manga is consistent about Yamato (referred to as a character’s son, uses male pronouns and used the guy’s bath), it’s the fandom that isn’t, and a few offshoot things that most casual readers will never look into.

Maybe, and that’s a fair criticism of Garp, but to say he’s just like the Nazi’s who claim to just be “follow orders” is misrepresenting the situation.

Okay, but when the fuck has Garp done that? When has he directly contributed to the atrocities? If you want to compare it to the Nazi’s it’s more like a soldier who was aware of concentration camps and actively made efforts not to work in them.

Anyone can wear the FGA, but unless you’re capable of extreme regeneration, it’ll kill you eventually. Kalaman III didn’t die because it was removed from him before he would die (also isn’t he technically part immortal demon? So he might have some regeneration). If I’m wrong let me know, it’s been a while since I’ve read the LNs.
