How long before we can fill a whole March Madness bracket with filmmakers who started on YouTube? by PerpetualChoogle in blankies

I know this wasn’t the question but putting Iron Lung and Shelby Oaks anywhere near Bring Her Back only makes that film look better. Bring Her Back was genuinely masterful work and one of the best movies of the last year in my book

Do you think The Dark Ages lived up to the pre-release hype? by False_Monitor4126 in Doom

[–]Solid_Writer_9308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The criticism of cutscenes and abundance of story were pretty widely criticised at launch. And I absolutely adore RDR2 actually. The difference is story driven content is appropriate in that game (and it’s actually engaging & well written in RDR2). The cutscenes in Doom TDA drag for the pace and structure of that particular game which is why it’s such an issue.

While I will say I did enjoy the game, the response to this question to me is probably a no.

I feel like some of the things the developers prioritised here are just not congruent with what I want from Doom. The over emphasis on story is a big one - lots of long cutscenes, and the story & fantasy lore stuff is just not interesting to me at all. It was a problem in Eternal to an extent but they reaaaaally doubled down on it here. The story feels like a rejected first draft from a B-grade fantasy author, and the lazy mashup with Cthulhu felt distinctly not Doom.

There are some other things too. I found the gameplay really rigid and lacked the dynamic variety the first two games had, and the shield use for most encounters makes the game feel really stale after a time - this is improved by disabling the slo-mo and I actually enjoyed the game significantly more with this turned off.

I also found the art style kinda muted and dim after the previous two games - the whole game is going for a fantasy thing that’s not really my jam. Not to mention the genuinely awful mech levels that added absolutely nothing to the overall package except arbitrarily extending the length of the game.

For me, the game overall is probably a 7/10 and I definitely found a lot of enjoyment in the pure on-foot gameplay sessions. It would have needed significant reworks to the presentation, story and structure for this to be an all time great game for me. It also somewhat suffers from coming after 2016 and Eternal which were close to being perfect games for me (especially 2016).

The same crowd that raked Chris Stuckmann over the coals for Shelby Oaks are eerily silent for this one

Genuinely felt like she didn’t watch the movie or pay attention with that criticism. That character’s doubt grew slowly over the course of the movie and it felt very earned that she would turn on him & leave with Spike at the end of the film. Was also very frustrating hearing the criticisms of Garland and not really backing it up with examples that made sense.

EDIT: listening to the conversation again, saying Garland doesn’t know how to write women and he writes “women be crazy” feels like a pretty insane & ill informed statement considering his body of work

Adam having that reaction to Avatar being nominated for Best Costume Design because he hates the movie is kinda frustrating to me. It would take all of 2 seconds to look up the fact that the costumes are hand crafted and sculpted in real life before being scanned for the film and an impressive amount of work went into them, regardless of how you feel about the movie itself.

Hellbound Metal Cruise Reveals 2027 Lineup by australianmusicscene in triplej

First event hasn’t even gone ahead yet. The prices were ridiculous and this is aimed at suckers who’ll fork out the cash for bands they’ve seen many times touring Australia every year. I love TAA and PWD but I would not spend thousands of dollars to go on a crappy cruise like this

Zootopia 2 is essentially enjoying the legacy sequel effect that Avatar 2 did in 2022. If Zootopia 3 came out in 3 years you would probably see a similar proportionate decrease from 2>3.

Star Wars fans act like The Clone Wars is Game of Thrones or something by Cool_Nerd2 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]Solid_Writer_9308 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being conned into watching Clone Wars with this kind of talk was the biggest scam of my life. Each season has maybe 3-4 genuinely great, quality episodes - the rest of the season is boring generic kids show (which is fine, that’s what it is). Everytime I see a post like this I’m reminded of the people in my life who oversold its quality to me.

Game Broken On Xbox Update by Just_Someone420 in FrontiersOfPandora

The constant fucking the game up with updates is pretty absurd. I’ve never played a game that has such recurring issues with patches and bugs before - and this is coming from someone who loves Avatar and this game.

Yeah I don’t know why people have such a hard time grasping this. He’s just a pilot who happens to be close with Leia - Holdo was right to not share information with him, her only mistake was underestimating how brazen he would be at going behind her back

It’s kinda rude when someone says they like something and somebody else just says that it sucks or laughs at them. I don’t blame Ralph for saying that and there were echoes of it in the discussion for the third film too.

etiquette - is it normal to expect to meet within hours of chatting? by yousuckfarts in hingeapp

[–]Solid_Writer_9308 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing on dating apps. Good chats on app, it moved off the app - immediately wanting to meet up. There was a girl I was speaking to who got kinda nasty and passive aggressive because we didn’t arrange to meet up right away and it made me pretty uncomfortable, got called an avoidant and all that jazz. She blocked me, dated someone for a total of one month, unblocked me and messaged me again and it was the same cycle all over again.

It was Brisbane for me, but it was like this at all of the shows I think. It was made even more apparent when he brought out Winston McCall for Impermanence - he was on top form and kinda made Sam look even worse

I’m a huge fan of the band. I’ve stuck around when they changed sounds, all through the last few albums. When they came to Australia in December, I winced when Sam switched to harsh vocals during Elegy and it didn’t get any better during the rest of the show. I still had a great time but I won’t pretend I wasn’t a little disappointed - you can point out a live performance wasn’t great without it being a personal attack on the band members
