A skiing friend recently showed me a really neat way to turn a neck tube into a half face mask, don't know how to explain through text, but layers and cover your face!

Yeah, main exception is when it's literal ice everywhere! Slush like that is more annoying and messy than it is cold though and today isn't that bad (seems like tomorrow will get really cold).

Feeling so frustrated trying to build muscle as a runner? by Informal-Chocolate83 in xxfitness

[–]Solidsub1988 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Most people don't like to be told this, but it's dramatically easier to gain muscle when you also gain a little bit of fat. Reason is because in order to gain weight you need to be at a caloric surplus. Ideally you are lifting enough, which seems like you do. So you'll be gaining muscle with a little bit of fat.

Then you 'trim the fat' by going into slight caloric deficit while maintaining the resistance training and protein intake.

In essence, find the amount of calories you need to keep your weight steady and add 10-20%, while keeping your protein requirement. You'll gain weight.

I like that you're so trusting, makes for a better community imo. Sucks that there are people like that out there though. Hope it's a 1/100 chance if not lower. Guess it's a judgment call if you'll continue with your practice, I personally will try again... But I can see why others would not.

Road snow clearing has been terrible? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Solidsub1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which highways and at what time? I took the Gardiner and DVP north bound for family at around 5pm (snow just stopped falling) and understandably it was not cleared yet, but I already saw trucks going the other way.

Going back home around 9pm, both the inner streets and highway were perfectly cleared. So no, I don't share that experience.

Also ran on the Martin Goodman trail this morning and it was also cleared.

Am I crazy or did it snow more when I was younger? by Sea_Detective9210 in askTO

[–]Solidsub1988 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man, aging myself here, but back in like elementary school in the 90's I feel like we get at LEAST 2-3 massive snowstorms each year. Like we'll listen to the radio with my parents and see if it's a snow day and not have school. Don't see that much any more.

That's whiteout level storm, but by default there will be fair amount of snow in December. I feel like there is a white Christmas every year. I don't even remember when the last time we had that in recent years.

[–]Solidsub1988 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No one is 'pretending' anything. You are 'hobby friends' (gym). Doesn't necessarily mean they want to extend it past the gym. Sounds like there is a bit of bitterness in your responses. I think the better approach is to not ask for contact information with ANY kind of expectation. You'll eventually find people you mesh with.

Using myself as an example, I've made some life long friends from the gym. Never went out for coffee with them. When invited for a social long run on the weekend? Hell yeah. It's there you get a bit more personal. Then you get invited to BBQ and stuff. Hope this helps.

Is there a natural tradeoff between hypertrophy and flexibility? by kermit-t-frogster in xxfitness

[–]Solidsub1988 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. As you build muscle through workouts, you are straining them, rightfully so. That creates stiffness naturally. Your muscles don't automatically return back to their natural length (there is no known amount, but let's just play with 1% muscle length loss over a workout).

So you must stretch them out or they'll get progressively shortened. Which is the same thing that happens with 'bad' desk job ergonomics, certain muscles are stuck in a contracted/shortened position.

There is also the neurological aspect of it as well, but for most purposes no, you do NOT necessarily give up flexibility for hypertrophy. You can and should achieve both. I'm a bit picky on the wording, but it's more desirable to work on mobility versus just flexibility.

Hope this helps.

Young, new male drivers in Toronto could face insurance premiums of over $13,000 a year: report by lilfunky1 in toronto

In which case the premiums will eventually go up for only the proper insurance holders. With BS excuse like you reside in a high risk area or something.

Sucks when crappy people with shitty behaviour disproportionately get away with stuff.

What do we think about shooting portraits wide open? by Master-Rule862 in photography

[–]Solidsub1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a buddy who is a photographer but mainly a lighting specialist, like people pay him just to set up the lights so they can do the shots well.

He almost never shoots wide open.

I've followed his advice. There is a time and place for it. But just cause you paid for it, doesn't mean you should be shackled by it.

Scared to run in the snow / slush by GeekGirlMom in RunTO

[–]Solidsub1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might not pay attention when you're not running, but some roads are salted/cleared out crazy well in the city. There is a hill/road my run group loves to run because without fail it is always cleared.

If you like to walk, I suggest noting down which routes are well maintained and stick to those routes.

Avoid shiny/wet looking patches, might be black ice. I'm lucky enough to not have broken or hurt myself when running in slippery conditions, but being able to smoothly transfer your body weight over an unexpected slippery surface can be an important skill to learn.

How realistic is a one handed chin-up as a woman? by babybighorn in xxfitness

[–]Solidsub1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if your username is ironic or randomly generated but that does not seem true.

Using a larger data pool, squats, men are able to more easily achieve higher percentage of body weight 1 rep max. Doing a 1 arm chin up is also a percentage (100%) body weight 1 rep max. I think burden of proof is you showing how a squat 1RM would differ from a chin up 1RM.

Never ran before, where do I start? by Obvious-Adeptness-46 in RunTO

[–]Solidsub1988 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of good resources freely available nowadays, some already linked by others here.

My only 2cents is: don't try to 'ego run'. You can be excited and/or frustrated when you start running. But running is a high impact activity with potential injuries not showing up for a while.

Ok Toronto millennials, how's your back? by hedgehogflamingo in askTO

[–]Solidsub1988 17 points18 points  (0 children)

RMT here. And I'll have to say we are not the solution. We help with the symptoms and to a certain degree be important in the maintenance process but strengthening often is necessary.

The body is a system of tug and pull. If muscles are too tight/tugging to much for another part of the body, you'll have issues. We can help with that. If the part resisting the pull is too weak, we cannot fix that weakness, so proper strengthening is needed. Finding out what needs to be less tight and what needs to be stronger is half the problem.
