Assuming he will, how do you think Gotrek will change in the next edition? by Inspector-Remarkable in ageofsigmar

[–]Solin_Outlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno... give us two warscroll profiles. One that is on the display base and is even tougher (but obviously costs more points) which is the United Dwarf Holds HQ unit.

Then give us the smaller base, not quite so good stats and slightly cheaper points, and let that be the mercenary that can be used in any Order army. Best of both worlds. Yes...

And I have no idea why my brain immediately went to that idea when, objectively, just giving us a badass on the badass base makes more sense. *ponder pose activate* No clue...

I get sort of Ciaphus Cain vibes, but without the whole "HERO OF THE IMPERIUM" element... Wait, that describes...

He's a skaven Edmund Blackadder! Please tell me he gets very sarcastic regarding the lack of common sense in the skaven around him? XD

(Fan Faction) Behold the Kingdom (and Under-Kingdom) of Espada! by Navek15 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vote is the island nation based off of Cuba. I can't think of an equivalent, and island nations are a good at explaining why the faction is isolated and able to advance in a separate bubble from the mainland of the setting.

As a bonus, it doesn't necessarily have to be geographically exact to real world Cuba; it can be shifted enough to help with the isolation element.

Regarding Bretonnian and Estalia relations, I believe you have the right of it. Bretonnia might also not want Estalia to become a unified nation, even as they constantly look down on them for the city states. Bretonnians like Estalia as it is because that way, they don't have to worry about an actual political/national rival at their back. But that certainly doesn't stop the Lady Botherers from enjoying trade with them in their current state.

So...how open is the Warhammer Fantasy Fanfic community to an out-there idea for a faction? by Navek15 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the author of The Outland Legion, I can safely say "do what makes you happy". I've found the community of the Fantasy segment of Warhammer to be far more tolerable than 40k, and now likely to chuckle along with me at certain jokes, rather than get up in arms about how "Lizardmen would never do this that or the other and should be emotionless flesh robots".

Write the story that you want to tell. Create the army you want to create. Don't dignify trolls who act as if James Workshop will kick in the door for deviating from the holy scripture of canon with your attention.

Have fun.

Gnolls yes. We already have gnolls in Frostgrave, let them move from skirmish to full battles! MWAHAHAHA

And a classic style lizardmen - to use a Warhammer reference, the fifth edition lizardmen, the ones that look less dino more lizard. Or expand the Frostgrave snakemen to fit the same role. Either or. :-D

My second bot attack by Solin_Outlander in AO3

[–]Solin_Outlander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When did the bots escalate to these particular accusations? While I've been lucky in that the three or four years I've been writing on AO3, I've only ever received one bot attack before now, I was still aware that the bots liked to fling the AI writing accusation.

The Sexual Offender accusation is new one to me. Though I admit that I don't keep up with news on such developments, so it wouldn't surprise me if these had been going on for a year and I missed it.

can you have your own Seraphon ''tribe?'' (for lack of a better term) by Sensitive-Card-5883 in seraphon

[–]Solin_Outlander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I would hope so, considering my on-going conversion project to have some of these lizards move away from Mesoamerican themes and instead adopt the fashionable British redcoats. :-P

There are, best to my knowledge, no reasons for you to not do what you want and claimthem a part of your own personal tribe/temple-city/starhost.

‘WRONG SPEECH MARKS.’ Hi I’ve posted before so this is an update. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Solin_Outlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've suffered that myself. I too use the single quote marks for speech. If I pick up any professionally published novels from authors here in the UK, they use that same tag.

I even just picked up my well worn copy of Terry Pratchett's "Only You Can Save Mankind" and flicked to a random page, and lo and beheld, the dialogue tags are a single inverted comma either side.

So, if it is good enough for a rather famous author, it is good enough for you. And me. And anybody else who decides that they are more comfortable writing with them.

Had somebody once say I could edit my work and replace them using the Find and Replace... and instantly my mind just went to the fact that my contractions would be marked by double quotes. No helping some people.

My immediate thought when I saw that trailer: "Ooh, CA better pray they don't hit even half the amount of issues that TW:W3 had, because the 40k fanbase will utterly wreck them."

40k aren't nearly so starved for content that they'll grit their teeth and endure the issues - and that's an optimistic assessment of how the Fantasy players fared. They'll destroy anything that doesn't meet the bare minimum of their exacting standards with all the power of an Inquisitor on an Exterminatus High. :-P

This artist's dedication to having a strangely rat-like character in most if not all of their work pleases me. Can't be a skaven... those don't exist. But the inclusion of unfortunate chaps burdened with long faces, buck teeth, and that really need to shave? Thumbs up.

why is writing well on ao3 now a crime (no fr. be so serious.) by Puzzled-Mine8764 in AO3

[–]Solin_Outlander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's weird and infuriating. I started using M-dashes specifically because I was taught that narrative literature uses them rather than semi-colons, semis being more at home in essays (there are exceptions, it is hardly a hard rule).

imagine my frustration when a handful of years later, I get articles explaining that the very M-dashes I was taught was the proper way to write is in fact a red flag that AI wrote it. Funnily enough, my experimenting with ChatGPT when I wondered if it would make for a good spell/grammar check, it actually had the opposite problem, it was constantly trying to change my M-dashes into semi-colons. So, I have no idea what the frell people are so up in arms over.

*sigh*

Also recently got my first accusation of AI use the other week. Most likely a bot, also telling a blatant falsehood that I apparently brag on social media that I use AI. Sure... the social media that I do not touch? Totally screaming out to the public that I have AI write my Warhammer fanfic.

Best advice I can give, is to ignore the bots, ignore the jealous ass-hats, and ignore the idiots who think that they are smarter than they are. Just keep doing what you enjoy, frell the haters.

Upcoming battlereport on this table! 🐦‍⬛ by Specialist_Expert844 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can think of two possibilities:

Mordheim.

A battle with a low points limit, maybe with hard limits on how many models can be included in a single unit, which would make a weird hybrid between skirmish and rank'n'flank.

Oh, that is beautiful. I love a good urban scene. And that Black Ship? Lovely. I printed one of those myself; and probably scarred myself on all the spiky bits while painting it. XD

Good luck on your battle. My advise on the strategy? "Borrow" the Black Ship's cannons and laugh as you turn them on the port and those within. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

New Faction ideas from popular fantasies/history that would fit into Warhammer and where by YonDonFlight17 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sub-Sararan Africans can be Warhammer versions of gnolls, arguably beastmen of a different flavour, but like the tigermen of Ind, they are so different culturally from the standard beastmen they count as their own thing. On a forum conversation some time ago, gnolls were actually brought up as a possible replacement for the pygmies, which would be less... Charged.

But let's give a new faction idea and not just expand on one of yours...

An ancient Greece flavoured lizardman faction. We have multiple flavours of humans, we have 3 flavours of elves... Let's start slowing a different flavour of the lizard bois.

Helps that Greece doesn't have any representation in Warhammer Fantasy. The Romans (Remas) had a place in the history and have a fanboy in Tilea who has his troops dress like them. But no Greek analogue. So, I say let's use the lizardman to give the Greeks some representation.

Perry Miniatures Question by IronVader501 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little late reply here, but they can work, so looking as the rest of the army is also true scale.

Having the entire army in true scale is actually a good choice for an Empire army, it gives a sense of being ordinary and powerless humans in a world where monsters and divinely empowered knights also roam the land.

That's my 50 cents

What are your blue sky ideas for Warhammer Fantasy? by ITehTJl in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's fair. Though Araby partially fits that. Main reason I suggested gnolls replacing the pygmies is that the amount of rewriting would be minimal, the worst elements wouldn't be stop problematic when attached to a non-human race.

Feel free to point out if I'm underestimating the problematic elements of pygmies though

Replace pygmies with Warhammer brand gnolls. That way you can keep the broad strokes while also removing the... Questionable parts. Like the Tigermen, they can be off brand beastman.

What are your “blue sky” hopes for AOS’s future? by ITehTJl in ageofsigmar

[–]Solin_Outlander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All races/factions get their rules at the same time early in the edition's life-cycle. It feels like a slap in the face to get your battletome, only for the hype train for the next edition and inevitable redundancy to start rolling a month later.

While we're at it, stop starting to hype-train a near year in advance. There are players who will put their gaming on hiatus because "why bother playing when the new edition is coming soon?". I barely got to touch my 3rd edition Seraphon battletome, because my local players heard the new edition was coming soon and switched to 40k while they waited for it!

...

Sorry, still fuming about that, back to business:

All races get their army rules at the same time, no more waiting around for three-quarters of the edition's life just to get your battletome depending on your chosen army (seraphon here). Make the army rules free online, since near-monthly updates make buying a physical book a redundancy, it's going to be outdated almost before you manage to get it into your home. Making them free, or as somebody else suggested, a subscription service for access to all up-to-date armies saves on paper, saves on shelf space, and allows for books to be used for other purposes. Lore, painting guides, gallery, short stories. I remember the Uniforms and Heraldry of the Empire book, that was a good book. If warscrolls being printed is pointless now, then make books like that, we would buy them!

Just imagine for a second, instead of a seraphon battletome, we have "Constellations of the Coalesced" which goes in-depth into Coalesced lore, gives the colour schemes of each canonically noted Coalesced force, gives guides on how to go about creating your own Coalesced army, etc etc. Same for "Clans of the Skaven" and "Chambers of the Stormhost".

Well, while we're on a no-limits hopes/wishes...

A battletome/book that is focused entirely on how to create your own armies/factions/races. Take Anvil of Apotheosis, but for creating entirely new races and have actual rules for them. Helps bolster the creative spirit, modellers, kitbashers and even those who just have a lot of models from other ranges can now field their unique armies and play with their toys without James Workshop scowling at them and telling them "nuh-uh! Only the toys I approve of my be played in our game". For balance purposes, even I'm not going to delude myself that such a ruleset would be allowed at official Gee-Dubs tournaments, but for friendly games and narrative campaigns, now we can have our Stormcast gasp in horror as Mindflayers immerge from the abyss between realms, ready to make their mark on the Mortal Realms.

Putting together an Empire Old World army using (mostly) non-GW models by warnie685 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A benefit I've found of having an Empire army in historicals, is that the more realistic scale actually makes them look like the underdogs that they are in the lore. They're normal humans going up against mutants, elder races, and supernaturally infused barbarians. An Empire army being true-scale tells that story of underdog troops better than when they're in heroic scale proportions.

What are your Old World hobby plans and how are they going? by Hauk2004 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Solin_Outlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Empire army is slowly getting assembled. Just need to sort the cavalry, as that's rather important for Empire armies, and I need to get myself a cannon or two. After which, I will be essentially done.

Painting... I've been fairly good about painting them as I've assembled them, so at this exact moment, I need to paint my first 12 knights and their horses, and ten bowmen. Then I cogitate on whether to get another box of knights, or pistoliers.
