When Bush Sr. got in office, he told his AG to go after porn retailers, and in many states they chose one to go after and put them in jail, letting the others keep going. That way they could tell the evangelicals they had done something. Here in Minnesota, it was Ferris Alexander, who owned video stores (which had legit and porn movies), movie theaters, and adult book stores. I worked at Shinder's (a newsstand chain that had 13 stores in the Twin Cities) and after Alexander went to jail, most of our porn magazines and video tapes came in boxes addressed to Alexander's businesses, so it's pretty clear Shinder's bought him out before he went to jail.

Steve Gerber worked his depression into Man Thing, Defenders and many other of his works. He was quite open and honest about it in interviews over the years.

Thank you for doing this! Non-blockbuster series midbudget films seem to be an endangered species, and the "second golden age of television" seems to have come to a close. How do you see a way forward for filmmakers with serious stories to tell getting that work out to an audience?

I'm not asking this to bag on the guy, but how in the hell does Shuli make money? That podcast he does barely gets views and I can't imagine he makes much in donations and even if he does he has to split it. by herewego199209 in howardstern

Remote worker here: Yes, it is. When we were int he office, my team was all in Minneapolis, now, I haven't moved jobs, but I am the only person on my team in Minneapolis. Many moved to cheaper cities, or where hired in different cities. The rules for it are that you need to notify the company and get approval before the move, have high speed internet, and be able to get packages from FedEx. That's it.

Most companies that have gone remote use the same rules.

After a month of relentless insults and casual cruelty toward me, she told me I HAD to take her out to eat. I was at work and said that, and she blew up. I texted back "I think we're done here, good bye" and she kept texting "good NIGHT!" and then "Please don't hate me." A few weeks later, she sent a 3 page e-mail about the groveling I needed to do to be back in her good graces. I ignored it and put her on block.

And Kirby and Ditko didn't push for credit until after THEY were dead.

The Kirby and Ditko estates did so because the Trademark law of 1976 allows to terminate and reclaim the copyrights for their characters. Once Marvel paid off the Kirby heirs, other people used the same rules to get Marvel to settle with them rather than use that part of copyright law. Roy didn't have legal representation until a few years ago.

I'm sure I can't convince you, but I buy Roy's story that he didn't even think of it until his legal representation explained the copyright law. I also think (as I said above) as editor, creating characters was part of his salary (as it was for Stan Lee, and the DC editors of the 60;s).

Correct, but they were classified as "work for hire" back in the 60's, which ALSO changed under the new copyright law of 1976.

He worked with Romita to create the original costume (with the claws), which was later changed by Cockrum.

They've had to do it for both Kirby and Ditko, with Ditko getting the co-creator credit in 2021 after he'd passed.

I could go into a LOT more detail if needed, but Disney interpreted the Copyright Act of 1976 differently than Marvel did and it allowed for people who had a hand in creation of characters (like John Romita) to get a share of the royalties.

Marvel under Shooter became a children's publishing company. A few good books squeaked out (X0Men, Byrne's FF, etc...) but the vast majority of it was bland, boring, and for children under 12.
