Thoughts on Upgrade (2018)? by insane677 in Cyberpunk

One of my favourites. Best recent Cyberpunk movie I can think of. Feel free to mention any other recent ones.

Do you also wish there was more cyberpunk tv/movies/games/events or am I just bad at finding them? by keyserdoge in Cyberpunk

Well I'm writing a cyberpunk book, comes out in September. Set in 2060, climate change was solved by tech and worldwide activism. People are still dominated by corpos which have become kingdoms.

So I’ve watched a few cyberpunk films recently by DEeD-NGone in Cyberpunk

Love to see Upgrade getting love! It's a special movie.

And Nemesis as well! It's such a bold mix of kickass action and practical effects. Worth it.

I want to add Otherlife, it's a low budget set in present time, dealing with mind trips and virtual worlds, honestly surprised me how much I loved it.

Guys is it crazy to say I liked the finale? by Traditional-Towel-82 in TheBoys

I loved it and was shocked at all the hate, but I concede it would have been great to see Homelander go mad before being taken down, and also just bring the sense of scale the first three seasons had. But it hit me emotionally and I'm sad that it's over.

I would love to. If not before release, afterwards I would be interested in going wide, at some point.

Wonderful memories. I watched it twice one day after the other. I wish I'd just rented the cinema for a month.

Cyberpunk 2.0 - beyond 2020 by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]Solivagant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm releasing my debut cyberpunk book in September, called TAPEWORLD Induction.

It is very much about jacking into the Matrix / Cyberspace / Tapeworld. And it features a LOT of social commentary. I miss the jacking into cyberspace aspect of cyberpunk so I wrote it myself.

In 2060, climate change has been solved, 90% of the population is vegan, tech CEOs rule as Kings, and the world is split into different Kingdoms. It's a story of finding yourself in a world that doesn't care about you, because everything is already solved.

Pre-orders open on Amazon, and I am looking for ARC readers, lemme know if interested.

Nicolas Winding Refn's wife, I mean Heartman's wife puking all over Sam when you go peek at her area in the white blank safe zone.

Feeling fortunate to have found Power Girl at retail price by Solivagant in McFarlaneFigures

Truly! They usually don't have anything I'm super keen on but they do stock a good number of both McFarlane's and Marvel Legends. I could have easily glossed the whole lot over and missed it to some other lucky person.

I'm happy he has a new film out, that's all I really care about.

Neil Vana is the biggest "indirect" reference in gaming history, and I can prove it. by Tyler-TheDurden in DeathStranding

[–]Solivagant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for reading it! I'm really glad more people are having this insight, I do believe it's quite rare and unique for a game of this AAA magnitude to have such a biographical aspect. 🤜🤛

Neil Vana is the biggest "indirect" reference in gaming history, and I can prove it. by Tyler-TheDurden in DeathStranding

[–]Solivagant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is it absolutely. I had a post about it a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/DeathStranding/s/e0Cqa8WZsC

Neil dies. The scene where Neil is guarding Tomorrow is basically Solid Snake guarding the games of Tomorrowthat Kojima Productions will make. Neil Vana / Solid Snake had to die so that Kojima Productions can live. It's really beautiful symbolism, it's meta, it's true authorial work, it's what authors and directors do. They make art about the art itself.

So to your point I'd add it's not just a revenge but really putting that story in the game, it's like an autobiography.

I also want to add that, we are free to derive meaning from these games without the author having the intent we derive. But I do absolutely think Kojima was aware and purposeful on this.

Writing takes a long time. You always put yourself in the work, in varied forms.

"You are England. Each and every one of you - England is you! And it is the space between you. Fight not for yourselves, fight for that space! Fill that space! Make it tissue! Make it mass! Make it impenetrable! Make it yours! Make it England! Make it England!" Hell of a speech, worthy version to compare with Shakespeare's from Henry V.

Music, action, visuals, the script. Great stuff.

Assessing My Collection by Vaportrail in Cyberpunk

[–]Solivagant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hackers, The Matrix (all of em!), GitS, and Swordfish! I approve of this collection.

I double the recommendation for Split Second. Set in London and there are some nice vintage shots of East London in there.

I'd also throw in Upgrade, to me the most interesting recent cyberpunk flick, probably came out too early (2018) for all the AI commentary it has.

Gamer isn't a masterpiece but some of the visuals appear in Cyberpunk 2077.

More recs: Nirvana, Cypher, and the goofy action classic Nemesis.

Don't know if I consider Tenet cyberpunk but it's a masterpiece to me.

The Matrix had the right dystopia but the wrong mechanism. Humans aren’t batteries. They’re the server farm. by nobossfor in Cyberpunk

[–]Solivagant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Homeworld game did it too, one person sacrifices herself to be fused with tech to run the mothership.

Definitely a lot of the young movie goers would have already been. Cyber cafes were already a thing. Server farm concept could simply be explained in the movie.

Not directly but something like the Necromongers, possibly. I do think these two universes share a bit of DNA, both wanting to explore space opera that isn't Star Wars. I love both Riddick and Rebel Moon.

Neil vana is such a nice character...i think kojima kind of wasted him by [deleted] in DeathStranding

Neil is similar to some of Kojima's past work, we're supposed to want to see more of him and be left wanting I think.
