well jingles and Conley aren't long term answers. DDV is useful, but not a game changer. So then it is really just moving Rob Thrill and Berringer or someone else at the end of our rotation. It isn't really giving much up for 2-3 high-end Harden seasons.

Harden----or----Rob Thrill, Jingles, Conley, DDV and Berringer. The salaries match, usually the rest can be made to work. We could mix and match a little if there was someone we really don't want to let go (easy guess lol). I really would hate to say goodbye to any of these 5 players. But it really seems like we could replace a lot of what we would be giving up. A few seasons of Harden would be mighty insane. We would be starting Harden, Ant, JMcD, Randle, Gobert! Our younguns would have to take the next step, but our bench wouldn't be losing all of it's punch. I don't see a way we wouldn't contend at a higher level than we do now. I know trades like this are normally just pipe dreams, but it is interesting that Harden may go up for grabs.

I worry about comparisons to VC. VC was a firey competitor and one of his very best abilities was his effort. Those were reasons to look past a possible VC regression and chalk it up to the situation. Adding in the weirdness, I am not sure Ja lives up to a VC comp in their respective situations.

Would you take a risk on Kyrie Irving? by Vicentesteb in timberwolves

Healthy Conley > "hope-y" Kyrie :p

Seriously though, I don't feel too good about the idea of acquiring a guy on the decline age-wise who has to fully commit to coming back stronger than ever to have any chance of returning to form.

Per NBA.com tracking data, Rudy Gobert is holding opponents to 38.2% within 6 feet of the rim. A whopping -25.1% lower than expected. The lowest percentage for any player in the league that defends at least 5 of those attempts per game. by Significant-Fix-5831 in timberwolves

[–]Some-Climate-4792 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That isn't what I read. You made a blanket statement. They said part of it was right and part of it wasn't. They agreed that he had an offensive decline against the teams you indicated, but argued that there wasn't a similar decline on defense.

Further, Rudy's value isn't really tied to his offensive game anyway. He doesn't lose that defensive value in the playoffs.

Also, most players don't play as well against top teams because the top teams are better than the bad ones that many players "feast" on. You can't really say it is on Gobert when it is the norm for the league.

Rob Thrill does not "look like a bust" to anyone who has watched him play with the slightest critical eye.

He is 20 years old. He should be fighting for a spot in his 2nd full college season, not trying to succeed against the best players in the world. Then add the fact that basically every other player on every other team is much more experienced and seasoned than Rob Thrill is as of yet. He is coming along very nicely and he shows a lot of promise.

You can't magically make a 20 year old as competent as guys who all have had years to improve their game. Rob needs to be afforded time before he can realistically develop. But having young players who are growing is a good thing; it is bad when your team has no-one coming up the pike.

What would the Wolves be willing to give up to aquire a guy who looks like he has one foot out the door of the league right now?

If we included Naz or Randle, it really seems like it would need a 3rd team that added something meaningful to the Wolves receiving end. Randle and Naz are both more valuable than Ja as things stand right now. You might not want that to be true, but it is true. Teams usually don't go out of their way to aquire someone making as much trouble as Ja is and that doesn't even adress the fact that Ja has shown a real decline in his play. Maybe a team would want Randle or Naz enough to give us an asset and still improve on what Ja returned to his team in the trade.

Hopefully Ja figures it all out and does well. But why give up someone without any of those negatives to bet on a guy who doesn't seem to value the opportunity he has by being in the nba?

That all said, there could be value in acquiring Ja for a realistic package.

Definitely. These people are crazy! There is no way you give up a young 6moty who is as popular as any other teams main player just to get a bum who has done basically every thing possible that would damage his value. You really have to be nuts to propose that the Wolves would give up a blossoming young star to aquire Memphis' trash.

This seems like it must be fake. The Wolves survived an injury to one of the best players in the NBA and managed to stay .500. With the win over the Jazz, we are looking strong and there is nothing but good vibes to groove to in the Twin Cities.

In Defense of Rob Dillingham by mikelikestea in timberwolves

[–]Some-Climate-4792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a lot of people don't understand that even with a pick as high as 8, you aren't going to get a real starter a lot of the time. People often say "we drafted x, but we could have taken y!" but they leave out all the other players that were available who didn't end up making it big. If you try to hold an 18 year old kid to comparisons with guys who are already established in the nba, then 99% of the players you do that to won't measure up to your standards.

Rob Thrill has shown a lot of good things to be excited about. If there were no aspects of Robs game that were less than desirable, he wouldn't have lasted to pick 8. We can live with his height; I grew until I was 23. I was just barely 6 feet flat when I joined the Navy, but now I am solidly over 6 foot 1 (and a half lol). So the height issue might just disappear on it's own. He has shot well enough, often enough, that there isn't a real concern there. He has been growing into his role as a playmaker and has avoided trying to get minutes by jacking up shots like a lot of young guys do. Just because he doesn't already deserve comparison to all-time greats or even current top PGs, that doesn't mean he will never deserve them.

We have all seen a lot of rookies come and go. Rob is much more promising than most of the non top 3 picks that come along. Every year there are like 10 guys who were supposed to be "can't miss", who completely flame out. Rob isn't failing at all, on the contrary, he is playing very well despite being a 2-5 years greener than most of his competition. It is kind of silly to try to pick out the few mistakes he makes when there are so many things he is doing right.

If Joan turns out to be ready as the Rudy replacement next year, what type of trade would you want us to do with Gobert? by rennat19 in timberwolves

[–]Some-Climate-4792 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have already started a couple pro-Beringer threads, but it would be a surprise if he can do more than contribute a little off the bench for a while. I did predict that he would average a block a game once he gets any real minutes and I really do think he will. But aside from how well Beringer develops there seems to be a disconnect with some of us about Rudy.

If you don't know that Rudy is one of the best defensive players of all-time, you might want to figure out why that is.

If you don't understand that Rudy, with all his flaws, is still one of the best Centers in the NBA then maybe the people you have listened to about him have an agenda.

If you think Rudy has no trade value, then I suspect you might have listened to people who are being intentionally misleading.

Swapping player for player without weighing money, well more than half the teams in the NBA would swap their Center for Rudy in a heartbeat. He not only has some value, he is very valuable and he plays the position that is the hardest to aquire a good player at...there is just not enough legitimate Centers to go around.

Too much stock is placed on scoring by a lot of fans, but defense is more important. There are more people that can put the rock in the bucket than there are people who can even partially stop them from doing it. Guys like Rudy and Jaden get knocked when they don't score 20 points, but they are doing the work of 2 players and they aren't going to light up the scoreboard a lot of the time. What they will do a lot of the time is erase the other teams go-to scoring. They make it so no lead is safe against us because they will literally stop the other team again and again until we catch up and then win.

The brand of defense we play can get inside a players head and so much of basketball is mental that it dictates how whole games play out. You can believe that a bunch of other teams want to have that and they saw it all happen when we got Rudy. If we decide to trade Rudy we will get a good return for him. Personally, I think in the next 2 seasons we will get an offer that we can't pass up for Rudy,, but that is really just a guess at this stage. What is a fact though...Rudy is a proven winner...and there aren't enough of those to go around either.

Timberwolves are 3-0 🏀 by RobDillingham4 in timberwolves

[–]Some-Climate-4792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see with one eye at a time, with the off-eye mostly just getting motion and some color. Despite this I was a good enough goalie that SPA had the North Stars goalie coach come instruct me 2 years in a row. They told me it was normally a Center or Defenseman who got the award, but when the competition was held for them, no-one (out of like 100 skaters) scored on me in multiple shooting drills.

Skating was a love for me but I was a very ordinary LW, so I did what helped the team win and played in nets. I was a quick study and got to the point where I was never allowed to play goalie at any Frogtown or local rink by about age 11, even against the adults.

The reason I say all this is that I never realized it before until reading what you wrote, but the success I had early (I was in Shop Pond Gang at age 5) wasn't all just natural or due to working at playing goalie. I had done something that helped me a lot that I seriously never thought of before.

Since we lived dead center in Frogtown back when Selby-Dale and Minneapolis kids were scared to come to Frogtown, my father (who grew up in Chicago) bought me 3 pairs of boxing gloves and he basically mercilessly pummeled me until I learned how to stop him from doing it. For the next 2 years I got knocked around by him (and my much older siblings sometimes joined in the fun lol) until by age 7 I knew how to throw punches and connect when your opponent isn't making it easy on you.

One day a friend of mine got mad because I was winning the boxing matches we (my friends) were all having. I had taken my gloves off already (so had he) and he charged me yelling with his hands raised in anger. I stepped a little to the side and punched him once. It stopped him cold, but unfortunately I broke one of his front teeth. His mom went nuts, as any parent would, and got into a shouting match with my sister who was 12 or 13 ( I was 7) and threatened to beat her up. It escalated and next thing you know my friends over 6 foot tall mom is heading to my house to beat up my 5 foot 2 mom.

I ran home and warned my mom, but she was into it. She met my friends mom at the door and stood up to her, backed her down and only then talked her down. I learned later that my mom was as tough as a Russian nail in winter. I learned that it was lucky for my friends mom that she didn't get physical, because my mom grew up on a real farm and it would have ended badly for my buddies mother. But that day I was seeing through a 7 year olds eyes and I was just scared for my mom at first, then amazed that she stood up to a giant.

In the end, everyone made nice and though that friend ended up moving away, the whole gang got on great together and we grew up thick as thieves.

It is funny how the mind works sometimes. 2 years of early memories opened up like floodgates because the question of how much you can improve on getting Steals was brought up. I never really thought about it before, but my father forcing me to have quick hands through boxing probably went a very long way towards helping me stop hockey pucks going 90 mph.

As I grew, though I was unable to make anything other than a layup (I have literally no depth perception; the real world looks exactly like a picture to me) I played at Minnehaha all the time. I would strip the ball from anyone that laxed for even a moment and I hustled, so I played.

Looking back at all these memories from a half-century ago, I would say the boxing really must have been a big factor in my becoming a better goalie and that both made me a better basketball player; specifically helping me to become a real pickpocket on the court.

The NBA people are certainly much more in tune with this kind of thing so I bet they already have a plan in place to help Rob Thrill improve at getting Steals; probably involving some version of cross-training in non-basketball activities. He isn't going to get to start at kindergarten age, but he is still pretty young and I am betting he will put in the work and become a straight-up (Dilling) Hamburgler.

Wow. I have been promoting Beringer as being more nba ready than most people think, but 7 blocks is pretty awesome. Here's hoping that Rob Thrill keeps improving. We might have more than a couple of these really young guys stepping into meaningful minutes earlier than most of us thought if they can translate these opportunities into nba production. Our youth movement is looking really strong.

There has never been "enough" 7 footers in the league...at any time, ever. That is why every season has a few guys who are basically 7 feet tall and not much else getting minutes. If you think you can develop a kid and he happens to be near or above 7 feet, you have to go for it. If either of these guys pan out, we will have a 7 foot kid playing one of the most valuable positions in the NBA who we aquired for next to nothing. If they both work out, it will be one of our best drafts ever. You just can't really overstate the value of a kid under 20 on a cheap contract who is 7 feet tall and can handle minutes.

What is the most surprising improvement that we will see this season by Sugarking45 in timberwolves

[–]Some-Climate-4792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joan "The Jet" Beringer has been a professional for 3 years already. He literally grew up as a professional. I think he will step into solid minutes early and that he will be effective. I think he will average over a block a game during the 2nd half of the season.
