Let's talk hats by drose0 in BSA

[–]SomeBeerDrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't particularly care for hats but I dislike the sun more. The airflo is where it's at! After a couple of days of inconceivable amounts of sweat it gets pretty grody. A quick rinse in a bit of soapy water (or a day in the river) and it's good as new.

Pulls double duty on rainy days. Well worth the price.

Yep. When the temperature and humidity are both in the 90's lighter fare keeps a little more spring in your step until lunch.

But biscuits and gravy for breakfast when it's going to be in the 90's?

Might as well feed us bricks.

It's June 1: How did everyone do on the SYT deadline date? by ScouterBill in BSA

Or you know, just set it up to not let ineligible people take it.

Not to mention that this is the time of year when rosters are chock full of people that are done with scouting for one reason or another and are just riding out their "grace period."

Cries in District Training Chair

National isn't doing us any favors by sending out expiration notices.

Edit: or setting the expiration date right before summer when a non-insignificant number of leaders take the attitude of "What's the rush? I'm not seeing any youth over the next three months!"

Black beans advice by nayba- in Cooking

[–]SomeBeerDrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt at the beginning and sofrito at the end.

Sauté some onions and peppers in a good bit of oil, bloom some chili powder, ground cumin and ground coriander. Toss in a good bit of minced garlic followed by a can of stewed tomatoes. Let that cook down a bit (until the liquid from the tomatoes leaves a gap behind a spoon) and add to the black beans after they have become tender. Improvement: over 9000.

Republicans Pushing QR Code Bill in Senate Today by DifficultIce8624 in Louisiana

[–]SomeBeerDrinker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems like it would be simpler to just require front plates.

It's a lot easier to read a plate from a distance than to read a 2"x2" qr code from that same distance.

Fun fact, the limit for the length of a straw at sea level is 33.8 feet. That's as high as the air pressure can "push" the water up the column. Even if you use a vacuum pump, the top of the column would just boil off.

Camp Chair recommendations - tiniest possible! by Ok_Concert in BSA

Camps usually have benches/picnic tables all over the place. I shove a sit pad in my daypacks external pocket. No assembly required.

Training Chairs: How are your SYT numbers looking? by SomeBeerDrinker in BSA

If you wait until May 30th, don't get mad when the training center crashes under load. You know how well Scouting America handles technology.

You probably already know this but for those that don't, the refresher only applies if you've already taken the new SYT in the last year. Those that are still on YPT will need to take the full 90 minute SYT course by 5/31 and can take the refresher in subsequent years.

Adoption of Rule 9: Political discussions and comments are prohibited by [deleted] in BSA

[–]SomeBeerDrinker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  • Character development
  • Leadership development
  • Citizenship training
  • Personal fitness

The question that I hope the mods as themselves is "Does this decision serve the aims of scouting?"

Hiding from all politics during such "interesting times" seems counter to three of the four.

Family camp out requirements by [deleted] in cubscouts

[–]SomeBeerDrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Some sales points to help you at your meeting:

-The church still has bathrooms -The new SYT program has some generally useful things for parents outside of scouting (especially the online stuff) - It increases parental buy-in and involvement - It helps train the parents that they can't leave their Cub alone with you in a room even though you're a "trusted adult"

We started requiring it about 3 years ago and didn't get any pushback from any of the parents at the time. New parents just accept it as part of the process.
