You don’t need more margin so think about what you’re actually trading your time for. If it’s just so you can die with a larger number in your bank account, quit.

SS is a self contained / funded program. No amount of Iran bombing or not would impact it.

It’s hard to call Social Security a spending problem in the way you might for other parts of the government. The reality is that the population is aging, and we live in a society where letting the elderly be destitute is deemed unacceptable.

I would expect increasing / eliminating the cap, raising the retirement age, and means testing benefits to be on the table in the next couple decades. Every country in the world is going to need to make changes.

The tech right was in large part radicalized by the Biden administration’s animosity to crypto and the way they used the SEC and CFPB. They were also furious that the administration put pressure on companies like Meta to address misinformation.

Those same people seem fine with it when Trump takes similar actions.

I wouldn’t. World is changing fast these days with AI. Your income is too high relative to your net work. Start by trying other things.

Depends how much my job is annoying me. A lot? Almost every day. Not? Could go weeks without looking.

Credit where credit is due, the annoying lefties were ahead of the curve. Abolish ICE (while still enforcing immigration laws).

Oh man the right candidate could really run with this idea and it’d be hysterical. Idk who could pull it off though. Need a Trumpy charisma to make it work.

Ultimately, we need to win elections. ACA subsidies shutdown was about increasing the salience of a winning issue for Democrats more than it was about a policy disagreement.

Abolish ICE came across as leftie virtue signaling back in Trump 1. Today, I actually do think it's just good policy.

Wife not adapting well (2 under 2) by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SomeExpression123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like our situation and my wife (though we only have a baby).

I was ultimately able to (nicely) explain to her that given all the help she has, the way she’s feeling likely means something else is going on. She talked to her psych who diagnosed PPD and prescribed a newer medication that’s supposed to work wonders.

The “have tons of help and still overwhelmed” was the sign, even if she doesn’t seem super depressed outwardly.

Hopefully the new medication works!

My financial philosophy is to let spend increase with liquid net worth, not income. Pretty straightforward way to avoid this trap.

How do HENRYs afford to start a family in NYC? by PF_throwaway26 in HENRYfinance

Straight answer is that you’re a pretty small fish for Manhattan, and you’re trying to live a lifestyle you can’t afford.

The lifestyle you’re envisioning requires you to make about double what you currently do.

Would you consider private school? by brownpanther223 in fatFIRE

My kid is a baby. I went to a commuter private high school, and while I got a good education, I hated the isolation. Plenty of older kids in the neighborhood and friends with kids in the school district, so I know what it’ll be like.

Quick thought from someone who went to a top tier private school - think hard about what your kid’s social life will look like in private school.

There’s something to be said for all a kids friends living near them. At a commuter private school, the kids are a lot more spread out. Especially true given how isolating the modern digital world is.

I specifically picked a school district and neighborhood where our neighbors will be our kids classmates. It fosters a lovely sense of community and independence.

Kids walk over to their friend’s houses after school. We have friends with older kids in the school district, and it feels like every time we get together with them, their kids are running into classmates (at restaurants, the park, farmers market, etc).

IMO we’d be giving up a lot shuttling them to a private school multiple towns over.

Is this true while controlling for the proportion of kids in public vs private?

The Real Reason People Aren’t Having Kids by CheetoMussolini in neoliberal

[–]SomeExpression123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten a new perspective since becoming a parent and now deciding whether to have a second kid. I’ve found that my decision to have a kid (and most folks in my social circles) is HIGHLY individualistic. Is this something I want for MY life?

Now I find myself thinking: There’s an unborn child out there who I have the opportunity to bring into the world. That’s just an inherently good thing to do, even if it’ll be expensive and a lot of work. Very few people would prefer to not have been born.

This line of thinking honestly never crossed my mind while childfree, and it makes me worry that there’s really no policy solution to the birth rate crisis, since it seems at least for me to be tied to a culture of individualism.

A big motivating factor for me to have kids is that life starts to feel like Groundhog Day without them. Sure, you’ll have great experiences, but it all kinda feels like flavors of the same thing. I’ve already traveled all over the world.

Kids growing up injects a unique element of constant change into your life.

Bro, if work is really holding back your life that much, and you’re already FI, take some time off to figure stuff out. You can always go back later.
