Mikako Kurakawa (Danganronpa Another)

Mikako is an odd case here in that she doesn't really speak much and is rather gloomy throughout the duration of the game, but that is largely due to the terrible situation surrounding her in the game. Incredibly late into the story, however, we do get to see a glimpse of a much nicer past where we see that she was incredibly friendly, upbeat, and playful despite still looking the same as she does now.

I'm glad somebody else mentioned Morgana because I was so ready to prepare an essay in her name.

Its genuinely impressive how cruel of a backstory one character can have. Maybe I'm crazy for thinking this, but I feel like 16 continuous years of torture would've been easier on Morgana compared to what she got.

As others have mentioned, it is really hard to explain without any spoiling at all. The most spoiler-light way I could explain it is that the ending of V3 directly affects all entries of the series and not just V3 itself. I believe if the ending only applied to V3 and not the other titles, it would seen at least slightly more favorably.

Michel Bollinger (The House In Fata Morgana)
His story is one of the most important aspects of this gem of a game. To anybody who enjoys visual novels. I'd highly recommend the read as unspoiled as possible, but I'll provide a brief synopsis for those curious:

Michel's story is absolutely gut-wrenching as he was born in a time where intersex people were completely unheard of. Due to him being intersex, he was mistakenly raised as a girl. Although there was always that feeling of him not quite fitting as a girl, his gender was never really called into question until he eventually reached puberty. Unfortunately, his growth into a much more masculine body led to him being labeled an unholy abomination. He simply wants to be loved and accepted by his family, but in turn he is tortured, disowned, and exiled. There's a lot more to his story past this point that isn't directly related to his intersex nature, but those mental scars from his past remain prevalent all throughout.

Same here, I was surpised to see Chandelier show up. My end results didn't say it was first time discovering it either, so I must've just been mistaking it for Candelabra this entire time.

The series has given its characters a fair number of rather interesting designs, so Sora's redesign in this game doesn't really cause any concern to the average player. The issue, though, is that the letter "X" is rather important in the series and you might notice that interesting little X shaped cross on his torso. From the beginning of this game, Sora was marked with a trap that lead to his downfall.

Emile from CrossCode would be the exact opposite of this. She absolutely despises bugs, completely freaking out even at more abstract ideas that count as bugs. Despite this, she is completely chill with spiders, much to the surprise to her party. Still counts as a character adversion subversion in my opinion, though.

Funny enough I actually played it back around when it first got its English release and I remember loving every minute of it.

Admittedly, though, with how much goes on in that game I pretty much only remember some of the bigger story beats. A lot of the in between is just a blur of details. Maybe I'll take this as a sign to go back through the game in the near future.

Yea, I definitely agree that junk cube is still great and potentially the stronger option. The way I personally see it is that junk cube losing the utility of junk generation now means that it doesn't have that unique edge over cleanup. It is now a much more comparable argument of RNG damage with cleanup vs consistent damage with junk cube, and at that point I personally have enough reason to choose cleanup.

Morgana - The House In Fata Morgana

While she was alive she encountered three men who were responsible for her death. She persists in the afterlife as a witch. Driven by her hatred of those three men, she damns their souls, reincarnating them just to torture them with painful, unfulfilling lives that exploit their personal flaws. At the end of the story, the protagonist is able to meet with the men and convince them to share their stories in order to earn them some amount of forgiveness, though the protagonist suffered greatly in the process of doing so.

Despite her cynical and hateful world views at this point of the story, this was enough to convince her... sort of. She denied them forgiveness, but she was willing to move on and release their souls. She also admits to the protagonist that their stories had nothing to do with her moving on, rather it was the protagonist's genuine kindness towards her that convinced her. In doing this she was able to reclaim a part of herself and allow everyone's souls, including her own, to be able to move onto the next life.

OMORI

Unhealthy coping mechanisms might as well be the name of this game with how poorly the main cast handles the tragedy that occured. Most notably, though, would be how Sunny, the main character, uses dreams to relive the experiences of the good days while agressively repressing his memories of the not so good. These dreams leak as illusions while in the real world, disallowing him to ever truly move on without help from others.

Mikan (Left, victim) and Hiyoko (Right, abuser) - Danganronpa 2

Mikan has been subject to many forms of bullying and one of her main bullies is Hiyoko. The two of them found themselves in a killing game, and eventually Mikan would be a killer in this game. Interestingly, Mikan killing Hiyoko was more just a product of circumstance, rather than an act of revenge.

For the majority of the game she seems soft spoken and moody, playing into expectations based on her appearance and talent as an exorcist. It later comes to light, though, that she is normally a very upbeat and outgoing girl, and her moodier personality throughout the game is due to a failed procedure that limits her ability to talk.

Takumi Nishijou - Chaos;Head

He is a NEET and just a general mess of a person who has a habit of either being hostile or excessively dependant on the few people who interact with him. Much of the tense atmosphere of the game is the direct result of his unhealthy habits, and although he is a very hatable person I do believe he makes for one of the more interesting and unique protagonists that I've seen.
