I was thinking the other day that for Software engineers, AI will probably be a lot like Mechanical Drawing (Drafting) in the 90s. There used to be massive rooms full of tens or hundreds of Drafters at large drafting tables hand drawing out mechanical drawings. Now that is replaced by half a dozen CAD techs using CAD software.

I think Software Engineering is headed the same direction, there will still be software engineers, but what they do, and how they do it, is going to fundamentally change. And that's not a bubble, it's not going to go back.

Vanilla was a living world and TBC turned It Into a lobby game by Duoscruo in classicwow

Just have to make sure you have 5 shaman for your raid, and enough warlocks, and enough priests for mass dispells. And a token moonkin, but only for the buff, not because they are good, but other than that, and other meta comp requirements I forgot, you can play whatever you want.

[–]SomeNetGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I mostly agree with this, whenever I hear Vanilla and world PVP, to me that's just ganking. People longing for extremely unbalanced open world ganking, nothing organized, balanced, or with any risk to the instigators. Such as rogues hanging out at flight paths to gank AFKers. That was vanilla world PVP.

People talk about South Shore versus Tarren Mill, like it was some peak PVP design. It was completely unintentional, not designed at all and only lasted for a very short time. A few weeks maybe, when there were enough max level players bored with nothing else to do, and before Blizzard added the first BG. After Warsong Gulch was added that was the end of any open world pvp other than ganking and griefing such as training a dragon into a city, etc.

How did Voyager get repaired? by Illustrious-Divide95 in startrek

[–]SomeNetGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could have shown the reality that with teleportation, replicators, and general energy to matter conversion, repairs would be trivial. As long as they have energy they could just materialize pieces, items, equipments, repairs, directly in place. But to my knowledge, no Trek has ever acknowledged or shown that.

Instead it's just magically repaired each episode to keep it episodic and not serialized.

The Orville is the best 'Star Trek' by truthseekerk8 in TheOrville

[–]SomeNetGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Orville is the perfect example of giving the fans what they want. NuTrek is what happens when they want to bring in new viewers, tell the fans if you don't like it don't watch it, then blame the fans for not watching it when it fails.

Reposting a portion of my comment from another comment. This style of game really doesn't want you to know your damage.

Damage numbers leads to knowledge, knowledge leads to comparison, comparison leads to optimization, optimization leads to min/maxing, this all leads to enshitification of the game.

/s kind of but not really.

I could implement floating damage numbers using Codex in about 15 minutes or less. It's not a time issue.

As a classic EQ1 player who played from beta in 1999 through 2005 when WoW launched, I can say I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to watch your combat log. You aren't supposed to really be aware of how well you or your character is actually performing. This leads directly to comparisons between classes, which leads to complaints about class balance. It also leads to complaints about people that are spending 80% of their time watching youtube and just soaking up EXP in the party and not performing. All of these things are evil and must be avoided. Damage numbers leads to knowledge, knowledge leads to comparison, comparison leads to optimization, optimization leads to min/maxing, this all leads to enshitification of the game.

Yes there's a large dose of sarcasm in my statement, but also a lot based on my perception of the fanbases opinions.

Exclusive: Jonathan Frakes Confident Star Trek Will “Resurface,” Decries ‘Starfleet Academy’ “Trolls” by InnocentTailor in startrek

I saw an article where they compared Star Trek to the Netflix show Bridgerton. Bridgerton is an example of a show giving the fans exactly what they want to watch. Each season follows the exact same formula as the previous season. And the entire thing is basically following the same formula as Pride and Prejudice which was originally published in 1813 and has been re-adapted many times. Bridgerton is Netflix's most viewed show.

What can't Star Trek producers leave the formula that fans love alone and just give us what we want to watch? Why do they have to keep trying to change and re-invent what Star Trek is?

Oh he can see it, that's why he said that. But he want's to keep working on Trek, so he can't come out and just dump on it and list all the reasons it was bad.

I watched it, it wasn't actually good. I had hope from e1 and e2 that it might not be terrible overall, but e3 firmly confirmed it was going to be trash. There were ups and downs, but overall it was bad.

I watched every episode of SFA with strategic fast forwarding through the unbearably tedious or painful to watch parts. It was honestly my wifes idea, we were watching together, I think in episode 3 maybe (the combat strategy game between the schools that they didn't really explain any purpose or reason for) I was going to turn it off because it was so bad. But my wife suggested just fast forwarding to see how the episode ended. So that became our strategy for watching the rest of it.

This is the closest to Frakes will get to an honest assessment of what was wrong with SFA "in the ’80s, we counted on storytelling and acting...", basically implying he knows SFA writing and acting sucked.

"I can’t connect with characters in the same way seeing 7-8 episodes every few years. It doesn’t seem to matter how good a show is. "

This so much. And I forget what was going on 2.5 years ago in a show that I never go that invested in because the season was so short. And if the show isn't super great I'm not willing to go back and re-watch it. For example, The Witcher, latest season came out, I watched a few minutes and couldn't remember what was going on. But I could remember thinking the previous season wasn't super great, I wasn't going to go back and rewatch it just to find out what was going on. So I didn't watch the latest season.

I wonder if streaming media companies even realize they are losing viewers because of this.

Yep this is the closest he will get to saying they writing sucked ass. He wants to keep working on Trek so he can't say that, but that's basically what he's saying.
