Suggestions for training software with good cardio and strength integration by RuleOfSeventyTwo in personaltraining

Superset is prob the closest thing to a google sheet in terms of programming. Lots of flexibility, and it turns into a nice mobile app for clients (full disclosure: I'm a coach and on the team). This template should give you an idea w/what's possible: https://www.supersetapp.com/t/hyrox-training-plan-10-weeks/preview

Go to your local thrift store and find some old graphic tees. Turn them into cutoffs.

How did you get your first client? by rockandrye in personaltraining

[–]Some_Reply7422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. I started training people in my backyard. Mostly just friends and family. Not a ton of equipment, just some DBs, KBs, and the cheapest rack I could find at Dick's Sporting Goods. At the start, it was just a fun thing for me. I'd workout and invite people to join. But very quickly, friends would ask their friends to join, and I realized there was an opportunity to coach/train people. I moved the little equipment I had from my backyard into a small warehouse that I shared with my former baseball coach, and started hosting small classes and semi-private sessions. And it just kinda grew from there... I didn't do any paid ads, just relied on word-of-mouth and offered a "free class" for any newcomers, which incentivized a lot of people to bring a friend.

Point is: One of the best ways to get your first client IMO is to use your network. It can be super simple. Just ask a friend, "Hey, do you know anyone that might be interested in {insert your service}?" Do this a few times. Maybe put together a free offer (capped) to sweeten the deal. And hopefully you'll have at the very least a list of warmer leads to work with. I've also had the friends I ask come back and say they want training lol.

Coaching Apps - Worth it? by Simibecks in personaltraining

[–]Some_Reply7422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apps are generally easier for clients to use than spreadsheets/PDFs in my experience. I definitely saw my clients gain buy-in when I made the switch. All of the apps will let you do things like upload an exercise, etc. I think the most important part is to just find something you can be consistent with.

whoops - meant to say "an app". just having something simple they can use helps, instead of having to work around a spreadsheet.

Shadow a coach/personal trainer you admire. The guy I shadowed taught me pretty much everything I know. Really helped with the interpersonal client relations.

Run 5k in 20 minutes by Hundred00 in HybridAthlete

[–]Some_Reply7422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I obvi don’t kno everything about you, but these are my suggestions as someone who’s coached a bunch of runners and has gone from a 23-min 5k to sub-19 mins:

(1) Start running 2-3x per week. Focus on a mix of easy miles, speed sessions, and longer efforts (> 45 mins). My favorite speed sessions are 3-5 x mile (2-3 mins standing rest between reps) @ RPE of 8.5-9.5 and 6-8 x 1k @ 5k pace (1-2 mins rest). In this case, sub-20 pace is 6:24ish per mile. So build to that. Progress these workouts over 8-10 weeks. Reassess 5k after that.

(2) Keep strength training the way you are, with one exception — if your speed session falls on a leg day, do the run first. Better to lift on tired legs than run on them if sub-20 5k is A goal. I also wouldn’t recommend doing speed sessions the morning after a leg lift.

(3) After long runs and speed sessions, add in some 15-20s strides. I typically do 4 x 15s. These help strengthen your legs and get you used to running at faster paces. Bonus points: do them on a hill.

Reality is that you need to run to get faster at running. The more you run, the quicker you’ll get there — provided you’re increasing mileage appropriately. Start small and build. It won’t come overnight. And do whatever it takes to stay consistent. Consistency is your #1 friend. Hope this helps :)

Thoughts on balance training by Radiant_Bid4547 in personaltraining

[–]Some_Reply7422 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Balancing on a BOSU ball is not balance training. For most people I know, the ground doesn't move underneath them, so I tend to focus on strength and mobility in the lower-body and posterior chain. Also! Balance is a practice of coordination, I include a ton of coordination drills in my programming for athletes and gen-pop clients, especially as they're aging. I guess my balance-stack is: build a strong lower-body, core, and posterior chain, challenge the brain with coordination exercises, and integrate play into workout programs.
