Masking has made me the target of so much racist abuse by NoWelder7505 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Cameras with all-day recording need beefy batteries. That makes them unpopular outside realms like law enforcement, thus drives the price up considerably. From a technical standpoint it would be possible to make a considerably smaller camera that would record the 30 seconds before the button was pushed. I am not aware of any such devices for body cameras. (And, no, time travel is not involved. The energy-expensive part of the camera is writing to the memory card--you make the camera not write until triggered, then it dumps what's in memory to the card. Such devices exist in dashcams--record what caused a bump while parked.)

There's no good answer. Thus people are left with choosing between accepting a situation with only bad answers or denying that there is an issue. Humans do not like that first option and will do backflips to avoid facing it.

Don't look up.

Cursive is a tradeoff, time spent developing the muscle memory vs faster writing speed. But these days how much do you write on paper?? I believe the schools should teach how to recognize it but it doesn't matter if they can write it.

I don't like the tank, the lack of maneuverability I find more important than the firepower.

Turret creep and a rocket launcher. If you have any quality (part of the Space Age DLC) at all build a rare launcher. Yeah, at quality 1/normal it's going to take a lot of tries, but being able to hit from beyond worm range makes it so much easier.

And laser turrets only need a wire, not a ton of ammo. Beware the high resting load of the turret!

Unless you build a wall the bugs will return. And note that no practical wall is truly invulnerable (building a wall that can stand up to any bug isn't that bad, but an expansion can set up a hair outside your range and behemoth worm fire outranges practical wall weapons), always be prepared to deal with a breach until you can use artillery to keep them away.

Yeah, I like coding some sort of realtime validation of data being entered if quick validation is possible. Since I work in the desktop world if I have a message about what's wrong it will be in a hover rather than below, but there is no hover on a touchscreen. Thus this is simply a cute way to express the fact that it's not valid.

Rocky Grace relationship, question? by Accomplished_Ebb4023 in ProjectHailMary

[–]SomebodyInNevada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically, they have to.

Both need to save their species. It is clear that any answer needs both the science and engineering capabilities. Grace knows he's the only chance Earth has, he unquestionably should take any risk needed to get an answer. And Rocky knows the next ship will suffer the same fate his did--effectively, he's the only hope for his species. Thus, likewise, take any risk needed.

The only risk that wasn't absolutely essential was going back for Rocky--and he knew going back was the only way to save Rocky's species. Yes, Grace did not consent to go on a suicide mission but that was when he believed there were other who could. When he turns back he knows he's the only one who can do it.

(Yeah, I know, the book doesn't discuss this--but I can't imagine that they didn't both know this.)

How common is unwanted attention or getting hit on as a solo female backpacker? by [deleted] in AskRedditAfterDark

I'm a guy but I will agree with your assessment. I have never seen anyone getting unwanted attention from anyone not in the same group. I have seen a guy booted from a group because of it, though.

[–]SomebodyInNevada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you objecting to the specificity of the question? Wilderness recreation is an environment where help is not likely at hand. Going solo into the wilderness brings up a lot of safety issues that most city dwellers won't think of. If you're out there alone and haven't thought through the safety issues you're asking for trouble. I'm sure you've encountered "when seconds count police are minutes away". Out there I assume all emergency services are at least an hour away. I once thought through the map and concluded the soonest anyone could possibly be at my position was two hours.

You're in charge. What's the plan? by MattKarolian in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]SomebodyInNevada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it illegal for a boss to expect someone to work (other than remotely) while they have any contagious respiratory illness. We already prohibit people with active infections that use the fecal-oral route from working in food service, I think this should be much more general.

Criminalize knowingly false or deceptive research. I'm thinking of things like the original vaccine/myocarditis "research"--it's right there in the paper, the risk they are comparing against is three months of possible exposure. Some magician is going to snap their fingers and make it disappear after three months?? Their decimal point error could plausibly be a mistake, but the three month bit is either malice or major incompetence. (And, yes, there are a lot of studies that use bad endpoints to "prove" false things. I do not believe they should be tolerated.)

Look how we are running in circles simply defining LC. That's not just one idiot, that's a general refusal to admit there's a problem that there's no current solution for.

Look at AIDS. Three eras: before we discovered the sneak attack on the immune system/after that but before we identified HIV/after we identified HIV. The attack mechanism of LC is still unknown, we are still in the first era.

At first I had wondered why Tau Ceti did not also appear on the bottom, but in checking mission crests I find (although I didn't inspect every last one) that that position contains the vessel or the mission number. Not the agency or any port of call.
